People seem to think that this song is about how Sigurd/Siegfried slew the evil dragon Fafnir. But in reality this is a song about carrying gold off the moor. There's an older variant of this song written down in Randers 1822 that is 132 verses long and telling the full story.

What i meant with that statement was that most people today use that word to refer someone who lived at that time. Its alot more easier to say that than to say "Ancient Scandinavians". I know who Leif Eriksson was, he is mostly famous for being an explorer and sea-farer. Vikings were the sea raiders/pirates who went on a raid/conquest in foreign lands at that time. @wolfman19892 Well yes, but Danish/Scandinavian and Faroese are still quite a lot closer than the other Germanic languages are with Faroese. 500 years ago the languages spoken in Scandinavia and in the Faroes were still mutually intelligible. But then the languages of Scandinavia started changing, but the Faroese and Icelanders kept hanging on to the old language. Which is quite remarkable since both continued to be part of Denmark-Norway.

@satancomm41 Actually Viking is not a verb, so it doesn't mean "to raid". Also, though Vikings are associated with raiding, the word itself doesn't have anything to do with it.. various things have been proposed, but in my eyes the most likely etymology would be that it derives from "vik" - creek or river due to the similarity. Also, "The Vikings" is often used as an umbrella term for all historic Old Norse speaking peoples.

One translation of the word "Viking" is pirate, because that is what they were, it had nothing to do with their beliefs. The vikings came from the scandinavian countries, Denmark, Sweden and Norway and raided not only Britain, but went far into Europe, and there are written accounts of them as far as France, I believe. I would post all the texts I have on the subject but unfortunately it is all in Danish, so I don't know if that would help at all.

@cilibinarii I have to disagree with you. Viking is a verb, it is what they did, not who they were. You are correct that the word probably is derived from the "vik" it has to do with their ability to sail the long boats up rivers in order to raid further in land. @wodenkinder The -ing suffix in Old Norse doesn't indicate a verb.. Viking in Old Norse would mean man of the viks, much like how in the Old English epic Beowulf, the descendants of Scyld are referred to as "Scyldings". In fact, if you look at some saga literature from Iceland, you will find that the word "Viking" is used as a noun and not as a verb to describe raiders from Scandinavia. And the raided mostly didn't speak Old Norse (except the anglo-saxons), so they prolly called them Norsemen.
