For those asking: 1) Yes I’m aware gold is a soft metal, that’s why it’s never on the cutting edge and the entire core is high carbon steel. 2) No you can’t just put a thin strip of gold instead of a whole layer, steel won’t forge weld at those temps or you’d melt the gold. 3) The offcuts are being saved for a future project, probably a folder and some fittings. Thanks for watching.
@bmxriderforlife12342 жыл бұрын
Yo dude you should build a small foundry set up to recover materials by using melt point to get them to separate out. You could probably recover the 10k gold and purify it back down to 24k yourself. And even experiment with purity levels from a smaller sample of pure gold. 10k is also under 50 percent purity. I'd say try with 14k or 18k if you try in the future with less pure gold. 14k is like 58 percent. 18k is 75 percent.
@TyrellKnifeworks2 жыл бұрын
@@bmxriderforlife1234 I've tried this before with lower purities of gold. The problem is as the purity goes down, so does the melting point. Thanks for watching.
@bmxriderforlife12342 жыл бұрын
@Tyrell Knifeworks yeah I've done a bit of jewelry work as well as working materials for sword fittings and such. Depends on exact alloy. Most people don't realize but there's alot of different gold alloys available for various purity ratings. I forget the name but an example is a specific nickle free white gold alloy that has high levels of platinum palladium and I think silver. Higher melting point then normal. A few work pretty similar to copper.

The fact that a patreon volunteered to front the money to give you a second chance at it. That is generous and, to be honest, a guy that must be confident in your skills. For him to front the cost of the gold knowing the first one didn't work out. That is a $5500 gamble. We need more people in the world like that. Willing to take a chance to help someone else regardless of the risk. Giving someone the chance to accomplish their goal regardless of the risk. Knowing they can lose all they invested. My respect goes to the patreon that gave you the opportunity to try it again. As far as the knife itself is absolutely stunning and breathtaking. Outstanding craftsmanship.

Dear, sweet Lord! I love knives. This forged gold to Damascus chef knife is the most beautiful knife I’ve ever seen in my life! I’ve never even conceived of something like this? I am in awe! Just an absolute beautiful work of art, to say the least. Definitely worth the extra expense for the size of the gold, so you could get that pinstripe in the false edge, which just makes the knife, coupled with the accent on the pommel. Can you believe the pairing of the wood? The yellow to gold ratio is perfect. I literally have found myself staring at it for more than five minutes, admiring all the swirls of the Damascus against the gold and jet black edge is the absolute best look ever.

Das ist die Goldene Liga im Handwerk und eines der besten Stücke die ich je gesehen habe. Ich wünschte es gäbe ein Museum in dem man alle diese Supertollen Dinge sich ansehen könnte!

I love all blacksmith videos. But I think the idea of displaying the change in the pattern is brilliant. And here again a masterpiece!!

I love how this one turned out, the details are lovely. And wow, even the box at the end was amazing. I love that you included the gold shavings in a little vial, what a personal touch! I'm in awe of your work, thank you for the videos!
