I'm Maori and I love this. I wish more people would learn the haka. It's such an enriching experience.

Im a Kiwi raised Samoan now recently located in Hawaii. I watch Kapa haka groups on youtube when Im feeling homesick and for some reason Kahukus haka tends to find its way in my damn feed, so I gave up and watched one of the videos...and then decided to read the comments...particularly the ones from Kiwis or Maoris to see what their thoughts were on a Hawaii school doing a Haka. Embarrassment....were my first thoughts watching the video. Please dont take offense to this, cause I think its embarrassing when my family decides to do the haka at family functions and 95% of them are saying the words wrong to Ka Mate. But that's family that weren't raised in NZ. My NZ raised whanau on the other hand do it proudly with the right words and actions. I guess at the end of the day NO-ONE can do the haka like kiwis do, just like the Samoans doing the Siva Tau or the Tongans doing the Sipi Tau. For Kahuku being a Hawaii school it would be more profound if the warrior dance was done in Hawaiian...why not represent the Hawaiian culture...its just as beautiful as the other Polynesian cultures. BTW the boy is a cutie.
@tamafaiga29383 жыл бұрын
The funniest thing I heard in Hawaii when the Polys were gathered, da Hawaiians played the Samoan sasa drum beat on the tin can and the Hawaiians told the Samoans "Hey, stand up, thats your national anthem." Its not important that we do it accurately....more important that we are united in the spirit of pride in our cultures. More people now know about the Maori's because of this Haka which has proliferated even in Hollywood. So chill and enjoy...we are Polynesians...we are not gonna stop doing a dance because we dont know the words. We gonna do em whether we know the words or not.

You mention the Ka Mate haka, right? This is not the Ka Mate haka that Kahuku is doing. This is their own haka that they created for their school. Kahuku’s student body is diverse with Samoans, Tongans, Hawaiians and even some Caucasians (via North Shore) I commend Kahuku for this tradition that they have been doing for a while now before it became the trend. I am not a Kahuku fan personally but have much respect for Red Raider Nation, they have earned it. From a fellow poly from Kalihi, GoGovs. 🤙🏽

While im not against other cultures doing haka if its done properly i must ask why arent Hawaiians doing a Hawaiian challenge?
@yrvjutrtubxsyi6 жыл бұрын
Allen MacDonald Kahuku has been doing this haka for a long ass time. They were taught this haka by somebody, and have done it ever since.
@yrvjutrtubxsyi4 жыл бұрын
@J F Cuz nobody went and taught it to them lmao, somebody has to step up and teach em because they're a football team, not a cultural dance group 🤣. But it's too late since they've been doing this for years.
@yrvjutrtubxsyi4 жыл бұрын
@J F Not because of that, it's because hawaiiam culture itself has already been damaged from when they were annexed by America. They couldn't speak hawaiian in school or they would get beat for that, the Americans came in and almost wiped out the culutre. Sadly there aren't that many people who would teach others, and even if they did, I don't know if the people they are trying to teach would accept the change, thats just me though.
@dalastkanakamaoli90583 жыл бұрын
@J F so you understand my people still get fucked over by the government to this day we used to have a haka challenge when cook arrived he seen the kanaka maoli doing it right before they fought but due to missionaries and stuff they stopped alot of stuff and called it evil and they made women dance hula they even tried to ban surfing
