Solid video man! I think both sound good and I love the sound of the 350 Vortec. At the end of the day, I would probably choose the cat back set up just to reduce drone. But, it's all a matter of how much drone you can deal with as well as if you want to be heard a mile or two down the road lol

I couldn't agree more with this video. I've had both 'cat back' straights, and catless straights (both on channel), and I feel pretty much the same. I ran with the cats for years, and the catless straights lasted a month or so. It's just too much. I constantly had a headache, and everytime I left a stop sign or red light people looked at me bad. I even scared an old lady on the phone one day so bad, she forgot to take off when the light changed, and just stared at me. Granted, she shouldn't have been on the phone anyway lol. Plus the constant fear of being the loudest thing in the county, and knowing you were probably gonna get pulled over any second. I mean, don't get me wrong... IT'S FUN...but not worth it, especially if it's your daily driver. I recently switched to thrush welded mufflers still without cats, and it's so much better. I actually can drive the truck and feel somewhat normal again, but WOT if I want the straight pipe sound. Also adding the mufflers made the truck feel like it had power again, though the cat removal didn't really effect my truck much. Great video man! I'm 100% with you. *Fun, but too much* That's a nice obs Silvy you have btw!

@AdmiralRustyShackleford8 жыл бұрын
+93 k1500 No you don't, straight pipes sound awful. Most people who aren't inbred hate them after they run them for a few days. I had no cat and a cheap glasspack on my truck temporarily, and I couldn't get rid of it fast enough. It has a Magnaflow now and it sounds infinitely better. Do yourself and everyone around you a favor and use a decent muffler, not straight pipes or cheap glasspacks, because then it'll sound cheap.
@Anythingwithamotor178 жыл бұрын
okay I'm going to get long tube headers this summer and probably make some 2.5 inch true duals with 8 inch glass packs
@AdmiralRustyShackleford8 жыл бұрын
***** That's still going to rasp and sound pretty bad once those glasspacks burn out after a month. I'd run a set of Thrush Welded, or if you're set of the glasspack sound, get the long case Dynomax Bullets, those last a lot longer than a regular glasspack, especially without cats. Lastly, have an H-pipe installed, it'll make the sound deeper and it gives you more torque.
@Anythingwithamotor178 жыл бұрын
well i don't really want an h pipe but ill get some thrush welds
@AdmiralRustyShackleford8 жыл бұрын
***** Trust me, if you go with duals without an H-pipe, you'll lose a lot of low end torque, it'll be a dog off the line. You can do it if you want, but I don't think it's worth it for the sound you want.

I’ve got a 96 z71 pipe is cut at the back of the cab. It’s a y pipe to the single cat and 4 inch pipe from the cat back. Anyway I’m assuming the cat is still intact cuz no codes (I just bought it from my dad who bought it from some kid) but the original Vortec 305 has been replaced with an 880 4 bolt main 350. That said your truck sounds absolutely obnoxious on video without compared to what mine sounds like with cats. In fact I had a 305 put in my nova which just had a one foot pipe out of each manifold that was pretty quiet unless I floored it. I assume it’s either your audio quality or the length of pipe on yours. I normally don’t like straight pipes on a 350 but mine seems to be just the right mix of quiet at idle with loud under load, I want to keep it straight pipe, but gotta have a muffler around here or get a ticket. Looking to find a “muffler” with no filler. Thought about finding an old mostly round cat that’s been punched and have it welded in as a “muffler” anyway thanks for the video!

Is a vortec louder than a tbi completely straight pipex
@thorcole20896 жыл бұрын
I wondered the same thing and I think they sound close to the same. There are a couple tbi's in my town and they are pretty loud and raspy. I have a 93 cut the muffler out and made a turn down with the cat still on and I like it. Has a nice rumble without being to over the top.
@adamchevy42836 жыл бұрын
I honestly think from my experience with the overall sound the vortec is louder yes. But however the Tbi is much louder and harder to keep quiet in town speeds and up to 30 mph at 1000 to 2000 rpm there drone is crazy and much harder to keep quiet when u want to keep it quiet compared to the vortec. But the vortec is louder overall full sound when on it all the way like a full rev off and higher rpms 2500 way up through 4000 rpm. So there both Loud in different ways I have a vortec and Tbi fully Straight piped and that’s how I know lol. They both have the exact same pipe size literrlly only difference is the vortec has headers and Tbi has manifolds I know people say manifolds are louder for more cruising around pop and it would be believeable headers would rev up louder. But I don’t feel even if they had both manifolds it would change the low speed and high speed sound that much cause I mean by Tbi is way louder crusinifn around but my vortec is way louder reving up so it’s quite a difference both ways lol

Not to make an argument it’s ok to have an opinion but in my the bigger pipe is only just deeper and It’s quieter. Smaller you go the louder and more obnoxious. Trust me I’ve had both 2.5 inch on a 350 and 2 inch. The smaller it got noticeably louder and crackles more.

I'm running a 97 GMC no muffler and it's cut off under the box. It's decently loud, thinking about running the side exit like you had done. And I'm probably gonna hollow my cats out. You should post an updated tour video of your truck, looks and sounds pretty sweet!

It's funny cuz my pipes are shorter and probably smaller and the quadrajet I have on it must not be pumping enough to make it loud. It's kinda quiet tbh.

i noticed 2.25 pipes quieter than 2.5 but smaller header tubes are louder than bigger tubes.

Lose of torque is that you lost all back pressure. That why we ran 2" manifold back with 3.5"x18" tips.

At what point did you lose torque?

Those cats make a big difference. I cut out my muffler and it sounded the same As it did with the muffler.
@thorcole20896 жыл бұрын
Do you have more than 1 muffler or was it a aftermarket muffler like a flowmaster? I have a 93 and it was a big difference when I cut the factory muffler out.
@DreamHachi6 жыл бұрын
@@thorcole2089 it had a Rusted out flowmaster
@thorcole20896 жыл бұрын
Ok thats why. Flowmasters have a pretty stout sound. When I took my factory muffler off I had a old 40 series for it but that was louder than no muffler so thats why you got the same or less noise when you cut it off. You can put a turn down on it to get more rumble or run the full pipes and it will get more raspy.

Was going to do no cats, but too loud. My MBRP catback is plenty, sometimes too much..

No cats with an X pipe is quieter then having cats tbh, my truck has x pipe and single chamber mufflers and its not that loud anymore which I don't mind.

I like straight with cats, mine is no cats with flowmaster 50, Its nice growl not raspy or overbearing, sounds like a truck should!

Any super loud exhaust is not it if you want to drive daily to work and run errands. My little Chevy Cruze is so loud it makes me feel sick and tired after driving it for a bit and I don’t feel like getting back in don’t know if it’s the exhaust fumes or the sound but it’s way to much to use a a to b vehicle. I’m glad I only went with a flowmaster 40 on my suburban and left the cats alone ir have a very nice rumble is plenty loud.

those tight chambers left open.. one would need a bigger overlap cam to enjoy the open pipes. Same for the L30(305 metric). The last of SBC mentality.. hate to see ya kill it. I have killed several and regret it. 200cpi cat, and flowmasters. Injection computer doesn't get jostled that way. Ignore the low HP comments, those are culted honda drivers. My "little" L30 is 280hp to the ground.

I have a '97 Tahoe, with true duals, no cats, with a Magnaflow 2 in 2 out 2 1/2 , with the tailpipes 45'd out the back. Much less cackle, more of a deep tone! And it's not a Flowmaster! Lol

did adding a muffler bring back your mpg you lost?
@TysonClassics7 жыл бұрын
its hard to say, once something is quieter and makes less noise when you floor it, it does seem more powerful so it could be an ear illusion as I've never lost mpg and it has enough power
