@MrAl281112 жыл бұрын
I be honest and tell you that while I gave you a like as I really appreciate the effort you put in for the restoration of this timeless equipment, please, please stop sand blasting timber. Just sand it at the most or use steel wool with white spirits to clean it up and if it is riddled with borer then replace it like you did with the barrel exterior. They did not paint, oil or varnish the timber in these grape presses for the reason that they did not want the finishes leeching into the juice (hence why the borer must have loved it - all that extra sugar from the grape juice).
@mrbappoo74302 жыл бұрын
Im no restoration expert but why can't you sand blast wood?
@MrAl281112 жыл бұрын
@@mrbappoo7430 wood is not the same density as most metals (although some hardwoods would seem to be) and the blasting can easily strip away the softer grain of the wood causing the piece to be damaged and greatly changed in dimensions. Good sanding techniques will give a more even finish or using various graded steel wool with white or methylated spirits can clean up the timber but is time consuming. On a side note I have seen baking soda being used in a sand blaster as a less abrasive and damaging implement. And yes I have seen effective use of sandblasting timber where the surface of the timber is burnt to give a textured finish that is in line with the grain of the timber.
@trapjohnson2 жыл бұрын
@@MrAl28111 Likelyhood that he changed the media in the blaster between materials?
@cavemaneca2 жыл бұрын
I think it's worth noting that while he restores many of these items to a technically "usable" state, more often than not tools like this are being restored as a museum piece. With that in mind paint and varnish are used simply to ensure the tool looks good and will not decay quickly.
@MrAl281112 жыл бұрын
@@cavemaneca No argument from me on that. I did mention that if you are restoring it to be used then it would be better to replace the actual part with a new part (reminds me of some other YT channel where it is often said "I make a new one"). I must add that the actual sandblasting did expose the true extent of the damage done by the wood borer (lil bast*rds that they are).
