Great footage. Thanks for sharing this. Interesting to see them pull off moves that are close to what are still done by F18s today.

The ‘Short-nose’ version is an entirely Different type of Grumman fighter (at @ 1:06 - 1:20 ) - its a 2-seat Grumman COUGAR , developed for advanced training of just-learning / soon-to-be fighter pilots … its designation was F9F-8T (‘T ‘ at the end represented ‘trainer’ ). Later, they were re-designated TF-9J and nicknamed as ‘Two-ger’. ( get it ?? Cougar --> 2 seats , Two-ger ) But the blue angels team used it as blue Angel #7, a back-up airplane and the PUBLICITY airplane to give reporters and VIPs rides….

Cool to see the Blues flying this aircraft. For the first half of my life there was a F-11 Tiger painted up in Blue Angels livery situated at the entrance to Pensacola regional airport. By that time they were flying the F-4 Phantom and later the A-4 Skyhawk. Eventually they redeveloped the airport, moved the entrance and the Tiger was replaced by a F-18 Hornet.

That was the old terminal on Layton Boulevard (where the FBO now stands), built by the WPA during the Depression. Sadly no longer there. But Mitchell still hosts a bunch of KC-135s, although they’ve been re-engined since the one at the end of this clip.

if the processing date was early 1959 and it was filmed in Milwaukee we definitely see 1958 summer. the ground crew is in shirtsleeves.

The single seat variant here is the long nose. The two seater is a short nose.

Dont know why it would read Washington behind the personnel cleaning the aircraft! But the land scape is definitely MKE

Very nice video with a very high quality for the time. For me personally, a real eyecatcher was the Boeing doing a low approach at the end of that footage. I wonder if it’s a JKC-135A with one of the first paintworks of the Stratotanker?!? Thank you sir, for sharing the film. Go ahead with your nice work.

Life-long greater Milwaukee area resident here, with unfortunately not much to offer. Except for, that building definitely looks like it does say 'Milwaukee' on it. As such, if this is General Billy Mitchell Field, there were for ages 2 U.S. military installations located there. The 128th Air Refueling Wing ANG and the 440th Airlift Wing USAF Reserve. Likely, 'The Blues' were being hosted by one or the other. I never was there back in the day, so can't tell you whose building that is. Sorry...

F 9 cougar is the two seat . Probably used for demo rides like they currently do with the two seat hornet

In 1958/59 the two-seat Cougar (number 7 on the tail) was designated F9F-8T (T for trainer - in 1962 redesignated TF-9J) and was used for press-rides, as the F11F Tiger (used for the show) did not have a two-seat version. This one Cougar stayed with the unit until the Tigers were replaced with the two-seat F4 Phantom in 1969, making it one of the longest-lived versions along with the Marines use in Vietnam.
