The Ohio class of nuclear-powered submarines includes the United States Navy's 14 ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) and its four cruise missile submarines (SSGNs).
Each displacing 18,750 tons submerged, the Ohio-class boats are the largest submarines ever built for the U.S. Navy. They are the world's third-largest submarines, behind the Russian Navy's Soviet-designed 48,000-ton Typhoon class and 24,000-ton Borei class. Ohio carries more missiles than either: 24 Trident II missiles apiece, versus 16 by the Borei class and 20 by the Typhoon class.

You are right. But we do feel the nerves! I served on a Dutch submarine. Walrus class. In a NATO exercise we attacked many ships, including sinking the U.S. aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71 after two attacks and we managed to sneak away. We also sank many of the Roosevelt's escorts, including the nuclear submarine USS Boise, a cruiser, several destroyers and frigates, plus the command ship USS Mount Whitney. After many stressful hours the celebration makes it all worth it.

I served as a Missile Technician Chief on the Ohio, and 3 other smaller SSBNs. It is dedication to duty, pride and professionalism that drive us. The U.S. Navy doesn't have "A" submarine that could destroy Russia, it has 14 of them. France has another 4 such submarines, as does the U.K. The very expensive policy of nuclear deterrence through a credible committment to massive retaliation is cheaper than the conventional wars it has prevented. It's a hell of a way to keep civilizations from destroying each other, but it's the best we've come up with so far.
@SuperRtrtrtr
@SuperRtrtrtr Жыл бұрын
Russia's navy is significantly weaker no doubt. Their strength lies with their huge amount of mobile land based Topol ICBM's. Just as effective but far less expensive. Biden is very wise not giving Ukraine the capabilities to attack Russia beyond their border. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has gone poorly to say the least but they have always been willing to accept massive losses in order to achieve victory. They've already inflicted $960 billion in damage on Ukraine. It's going to be a very long winter for them. No matter how long it takes, Russia will prevail.

@@johnlopez1604 Russia's nuclear capability is ancient like the rest of it's military. That's been proved in Ukraine where they took a battering by western armaments. U.S. and Europe have a missile defense system, better intelligence, quicker response, Russia would be annihilated before it's first hypersonic intercontinental missile even enters orbit. United States will never advertise it's capabilities, like Russia, because this is a sign of fear. The two militaries are miles apart, U.S. main adversary isn't even Russia, it's China. I’m talking about all militaries when I say this. It is crazy, even scary amazing when you see how far mankind has come with technology in just 100 years. Maybe its just me but it seems like in the last century man has had an explosion in the tech world. And thats only considering what we know about. They are usually many decades ahead of us, the general public.The first “Powered,” flight was less than 120 years ago. 1903 to be exact. In far less than 100 years we went from flying 20 or 30 MPH to flying well past Mach 1 which is the speed of sound. Close to 750 MPH. If you want something perfected, turn it into a lethal weapon. Man will devote every dollar and every hour to making it even more deadly. I think its pretty obvious where we are headed.

@orrett - I think one needs to distinguish between the Permanent/Deep states of both Russia & the US (and the PRC too) vs. their people. The peoples of the world of course, do not want war. The Russian people certainly do not. But the Permanent/Deep states of both Russia and the US want what is in their "interests". Its clear Putin does want war with Ukraine, and their land. Probably Transnistria & Moldova too. Maybe the Baltics. He already has Belarus, and hegemony of Kazakhstan. But the US Permanent State too has a history of waging wars to further its "interests". --We were notorious for using force to further our economic interests in Latin America pre-WW2. And pretexts were arranged (Gulf of Tonkin, Iraqi WMD) for wars against N. Vietnam and Iraq. No elected or appointed officials were ever held accountable --- via the equivalent of a Nuremburg Tribunal for those "mistakes" -- keep in mind, 2 MM southeast Asians died from that conflict. And America just "forgets" to hold anyone accountable. ... American "mistakes" are often more bloody than Russian maliciousness.

@@scottrobinson2286 Russian tanks, unlike European and American ones, have an automatic ammunition loader, this is their advantage in battle and at the same time is a weak point, since the ammunition is located inside the hull and therefore, if a rocket or RPG is successfully hit, the ammunition explodes, and the abrams or other tanks, the ammunition is located in the back of the tower and there are special knockout panels, in addition, all European tanks and American tanks did not participate in serious wars against a modern enemy who has modern anti-tank weapons, so now it’s hard to say which tanks are more effective in such conflicts expensive abrams and leopards or cheap t 72s that were produced like Kalashnikovs.

The infrastructure would be destroyed by the explosion and the ability to get food, water, and medical treatment would be extremely difficult at the very least. The overall number of both Trident subs and their nuclear-warhead missiles initially deployed has been cut back in the last 15 or so years as the boats' missions have been modified to some beyond nuclear launch, replaced by conventional cruise missiles. Or some missile tubes have been designated as subject to modification in order to serve as 'launch' pads for SEAL-type infiltration mission teams. The fewer subs to track, the more assets adversaries like Russia/China will have to look for and perhaps find the remainder, by default. The fewer missiles available to launch, the fewer that Russian/Chinese anti-missile defenses will have to contend with. Plus, the Tridents were never intended or built as first-strike weapons against hardened land-based ICBM sites---just like their Minuteman counterparts. So in the aggregate, the original deterrent value has been reduced to an extent that it is increasingly marginal. Likely still the strongest, most capable part of the overall U.S. deterrent, but a reduction in force has not helped.

If I was an enemy of the United States I wouldn’t make the mistake you just made… There’s more than enough in our arsenal to kill the entire planet 20 times over no matter where the detonations actually occur, the food supply of the entire planet would be contaminated within 96 hours and won’t return to an edible state for at least 60 to 150 years… no human would survive more than a few months… I’d say we still have more than plenty if we should need them… And if ours aren’t enough the other 15,000 that would be launched in retaliation would finish the job… I’d say you are very incorrect that it’s not every bit the deterrent is very much as strong as it’s ever been… And I wouldn’t be so sure there are fewer out there, the newer physics packages are tiny, many more than you think could be lurking in few delivery packages, and let’s not kid ourselves as to the number of devices in orbit shall we… And they don’t have to destroy hardened targets my man, they just have to get within a couple hundred miles of the grain feilds, that’s how they kill!
