I was there in the background - fun fact @2:49 where Bono spray paints that sculpture behind the band - he was cited by the SFPD for vandalism and had to pay a fine. A couple of nights later at the concert at the Coliseum in Oakland the artist that created the sculpture had been flown in at the band's expense from Montreal and got to spray paint graffiti on U2's background set on stage.

i had just moved to San Francisco the year before from Manhattan, and heard they would be there, so took off to see them on my lunch hour as I worked just a few blocks away. Couldn't get past the foot of Market Street, it was so crowded and packed tight, but the sound nevertheless could be heard, and it was just a fantastic feeling to know I wouldn't be longing for the energy of nyc at all, as SF was just as magical and exciting musically back then. It was a great time to be living here.

Of the variations of this song U2 have done, I'd say this is my favourite. It's not unusual for bands to experiment, even with covers, so it's surprising how rarely I hear of people preferring specific renditions.

I had my own business, a Diet Center about 20 minutes from downtown San Francisco. Not sure I had advanced notice, or I think I would just have closed my business and gone to see U2, they are one of my all time favorite bands. I know the area well, usually on Fridays I would drive into the financial district and meet friends for a few drinks, and later perhaps dinner.

My God these guys were so good. For my money one of the 3 best live bands in the history of rock along with Queen (with Freddie) and Pink Floyd. Having seen most big bands and acts close to their heyday, nothing touches those 3 bands. Narrowed down even further, ZooTV and Pink Floyd Pulse are on an entirely different level than anyone else. I only say that to provide context for what I’m about to say… It breaks my heart how awful they are now. I’ve never seen a band lose so much so quickly. Their Sphere residency was a disaster. Bono‘s voice is just shot. And the thing is they’re not really all that old. Simon Le Bon and Robert Smith still Sound fantastic.
