I've just discovered the answer for my question. See it: Seems that the Shine Like Stars bit started around the 5 days that U2 were in LA during the Joshua Tree tour. Back then, and occasionally now, he will then go into Joy Divisions "Love Will Tear Us Apart". While mostly sang as: We'll shine like stars in the summer night, we'll shine like stars over winter skies, one heart, one hope, one love... Bono does vary it some; at times including something in reference to where the show is, such as desert, instead of summer nights when in Phoenix and such or under Paris lights, if memory serves when in Paris. The ending has also been sang as one heart, one hope, one blood and variations there of. The "Shine Like Stars" coda, seemed to disappear around PopMart and only appeared a few times on Vertigo. Seems this bit is certainly a fan favorite, I have even seen fans with "Shines Like Stars" signs, in efforts to get Bono to sing the bit. Thanks

Expertly written there. IMHO, the greatest live performance and recording of "With Or Without You" was at the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum concert on November 14th, 1987, which includes both the "Shine Like Stars" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" snippets. Beautiful, simple, powerful, absolutely perfect rendition. People here , Bay Area U2 fans never forgot it. Talked about it for decades...

Nice to find a video with this coda. I saw U2 in Houston on the Joshua Tree tour (1987). Bono added the “Shine Like Stars” verse that night and I never forgot it. Thought it made the song better. Saw them twice more in later years and he didn’t include it.

What people don't know with Bono in a sling is because he injured his arm in Washington. DC at the RFK Stadium and he had the sling for a month that enabled him to play the guitar for a while. In this concert. He defies it by playing People Get Ready until asking a fan to play it for him.

As great as Bono's vocals are here, having seen him on U2's latest tour (2015), wow! He sounds even better now (no "Kermit" voice or screeching to hit notes) than he did then. Just hear him belt out "Every Breaking Wave" and you'll understand. Plus, given the nearly 30 year difference in time, I'm impressed.
