The in wall concept will only work if Unifi will continue to make future models that will work with the same in wall plate. I don't want to deal with modifying or covering up the hole when I upgrade this AP.

This is a great point! I’m definitely intrigued by the idea. It’ll be interesting to see if the one with the built-in switch uses the same recessed form-factor. I’ve seen someone state in the comments of another video that they have one of the previous gen of this AP, and said it covers their office and small warehouse very well.

We definitely painted a few APs both indoors and for WISP work. I think the paintable covers should have been something they made for all APs a long time ago, the "designer" covers always looked a little strange. Many stores with the "industrial" look to them have a black painted open ceiling, so hanging a matt white AP off it looked bad.

Many type of paints contain metal particles. Putting a painted cover on top of the Access point will reduce antenna performance if a proper paint without metal is not chosen.

What is the antenna radiation pattern? Is it a horizontal donut? Or maybe a cone radiating out of the front? If it's a cone shape, is that a 170, 110, 90, etc.. degree cone? Also, what happens to the temperature when it's using the recessed wall box? Thanks for your videos. They're my primary source of info on new Ubiquiti products. They're informative and well made.
@RickActual
@RickActual 3 ай бұрын
Also, what happens to the temperature when you paint a cover and wrap that around an already hot AP that is recessed into a wall? This is definitely an application that justifies an internal fan. Yet, that fan better be serviceable and the AP needs some form of detection for fan failure to alert you ASAP. I wonder if these things are going to burn out the chips… Having said that, it’s a great idea. I really hope it’s executed well.

curious if this has any directionality at all? for example I'd like to mount in a hallway near the middle of my house, would clients that are "behind" the AP get the same performance as those "in front" of it? In the same vein, would the in-wall (as opposed to on-wall) option get slightly better signal (1 less layer of drywall/plaster), or is the in-wall mount option 100% aesthetics?

I’m really bummed you weren’t able to test multi-link operation (and it didn’t even get a mention) aka MLO. Being able to aggregate 5ghz, 6ghz, and 2.4ghz is the big advantage of WiFi 7, and I believe the firmware was out when this was posted. I could be wrong here, but, effectively I believe you only tested the WiFi 6E capabilities? Unless you were on UniFi Network Application 8.2.93 or greater, which wasn’t mentioned, this was a big oversight to me. I’m having trouble finding content covering Ubiquiti’s MLO capabilities, which is the only thing that would possibly convince me to upgrade from the U6-Enterprise (especially given the 2x2 instead of 4x4 MIMO on 5 and 6ghz)

6ghz alone isn’t WiFi 7, it’s 6E. 320 mhz width AND mlo is WiFi 7. Companies (both ap’s and client devices) are still sorting out mlo so we don’t really know how these ap’s will do with true WiFi 7.

Y eso que no lo tengo empotrado en la pared, en la pared creo que subiría bastante más la temperatura.

You are not supposed to use IR thermometers on shiny metal surfaces, and shiny plastics are not great either, emissivity is too low on those and you end up measuring your environment not the target you are trying to measure (the effect can be really nicely seen when you try to measure a glass window or mirror with a thermal camera and all you see is your reflection).

@@fwiler convenience? Look at the U6 In-wall. Most of it goes outside of the wall. When most of the device is outside of the wall, calling it "In-Wall" accomplishes nothing. By that same logic, every piece of equipment made by Ubiquity gets "In" in it's name.

Traded downstream ports for invisibility.... No thanks. I get why some customers would like invisibility, (seen plenty who hide AP's in Drop ceilings). But I hate it! Makes troubleshooting a pain, unless it's well documented (which almost never is) and if you are inheriting the network from a previous provider / IT, you are praying for that documentation, vs when they can all be found easily. Downstream ports would have been way more useful. Hopefully we see that, as the desk stand with that, would be actually be useful for my deployments.
