When the Universal Audio company created the Dream 65 Reverb 'amp' that should replicate a Fender Reverb of 1965 vintage I was a little surprised that UAD were creating it, having known the brand for studio equipment really. So I was intrigued as to whether the device really could replace one of the worlds best tube amplifiers in a sort of 6x4 alloy box?
Now Universal Audio are known for quality, so with some trepidation I bought one from GAK (a UK music dealer) and decided to look close, really close. In fact after a look around the internet I could not believe that there were few (if any) reviews that did anything except just play the device. Let's face it, we KNOW how it should sound... right? No one mentioned hardly anything in their so called 'reviews'.
So, I decided to create the ultimate review so anyone can see the overall quality, the way to use it themselves, the I/O the warranty, the manual, the apps for using it and so much more. This video is the result of a solid weeks work to produce.
I then go on to play the pedal towards the end of the video review with guitar and it sounded to me VERY similar to the real deal Fender amp, but of course its lighter, more flexible and indeed costs probably eight or ten times less... what's not to like?
Find out in this review EXACTLY what I think - a paying customer, and would I buy again? Is this 'amp' really good enough to be called a 65 reverb? All the answers are here, including the processors and so much more.
I have spent considerable time creating this video and there is nothing in this video that is in ANY WAY sponsored - this is entirely my own work and is a completely truthful independent review - so check it out and don't just watch the sales videos from others!
PLEASE SUBSCRIBE, RING THE BELL, AND THUMBS UP to give my channel a boost and thank you for watching - I hope the video is enjoyable.

Well thank you for even taking the time to have a look. This pedal is honestly a revelaton (you will know that) after seeing some of the stuff out there - at last a pedal that really did deliver on the 'promise' of the quality, the emulation and tones and the 'feel' when you use it. Whoever is assembling the gear did a wonderful job IMO - I have never seen better and I have been looking inside gear now since 2009... it says a lot about your company and products. Thanks.

Hello UA guys... one big favor please, can you ask your mobile app developers to let you cut and paste passwords (I'm on Android) It won't allow me, and my uaudio account password is long and complex, as all passwords should be. So grabbing the password from my password manager and pasting it into the app, does not work. I had to get creative. You are inadvertently creating an environment where customers will create less safe passwords. Thanks!

Great review Tony. I've watched quite a few on this. Never been convinced by other products but this is the first time I've thought about ditching the amp. For recording mainly, maybe live too - although for most live performances, the amp and cabs are my monitor because the tech guy is probably playing on his mobile and doesn't notice me gesticulating about the sound. Spinal Tap stuff.

Hi Tony. I balk at KZbin videos over 10 minutes long. I rage quit the ones from your buddies at Andertons all the time because they drone on and on forever (and when Chapman was with them holy cow I swore them off it was insufferable). But I watch hour-long videos from you all the time and enjoy them. Geeky stuff and I appreciate that, even though I'm not a chip designer or whatever. Keep it up! Cheers.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom Жыл бұрын
Ha Andertons are absolutely not my buddies and to be honest I rarely if ever use their company. Neither am I a fan of Mr Chapman really, I think he is well above himself sometimes and does not 'get it' - ultimately he is a seller of cheap far east guitars. So I understand why you commented as you did and its actually very appreciated. If I make short videos I would miss so much of the reality of a piece of gear and no one ever really shows what its all like. I get things wrong sometimes - I'm not perfect but I do try very hard to show what the gear is really like and this video is a good example. I looked hard for ANY issue and in this case it was all generally good. Sounded good too :) the only thing about the chip stuff is was something built down to a price and whats the quality overall. Cheap dsp can offer cheap results due to inadequate power and in the case of much of these sort of devices the processor influences the number of items in the chain... anyway thanks for the comments and for watching.

I picked one of these up the other day with the intention of using it as a pedal platform. I was not disappointed. I'm still in the process of auditioning various distortions to use with it, but even at this early state of sonic investigation I can tell this pedal really is something special. It just sounds so much better than all the other preamp pedals I've used to date. That and the fact that its indigenous cab sims sound good enough on their own not to need any further eq'ing really make this pedal, for me at least, the answer to just about every pedal rig problem I had. Anyways, this review sort of sealed the deal for me, as I was having trouble deciding between this and the Iridium. The only other feature I would've liked to have seen included would've been an fx loop, but maybe that would've simply made the rear a little too crowded. Other than that, I really feel like this is a near perfect pedal given the current technology.

@@tonymckenziecom The one thing about the pedal that kind of irks me is UA's insistance upon having to use a cell phone app in order to access those presets. I mean why not make them accessible via the on-line registration process? Something else I think might make the pedal an even more attractive option for people like myself would be the ability to buy and upload different cabs to my pedal sort of in the same way that Two-Notes does theirs.

Tony you are a legend. Long followed you and love your honesty. I own a Kemper and long been looking for something that will give me those quality Princeton style cleans in a smaller form. Honestly when comparing this to the Kemper Fenders does it stand up? To my ears the UAD sounds good but has a slightly artificial high end in comparison, a sort of sheen. Although to be fair that's KZbin video comparison rather than in person.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 2 жыл бұрын
Ah I have been called a 'Leg End' many times :) I also own a Kemper rack and Kemper since 2011/12 within just a few months of them coming out. A clever device. I don't own a Fender Reverb sadly... so I can't do the direct comparisons to the Dream pedal. I could 'compare the Kemper and the UA Dream though. But I think all sims are 'approximations' of the real deal amps. Of all the simulators out there the Kemper OVERALL just IMO offers a lot - and when it came out it really offered a lot more back in 2012. The UA Dream of course is really just ONE amp simulation and the Kemper literally hundreds if not thousands by now. I did think though that the UA Dream 'feels' more like a real deal amp than most sims I have used (and that's nearly all of them). I still like Kemper gear and its why I still own mine, but I do think that the Kemper (in the simulations field and related to technology) needs an update and if they wake up over there and do it I would buy one immediately. For me the UA pedals are not really something I have looked at historically, but the whole experience of the Dream was really very good. And it's great to get your comments too as a user of the gear that matters. Ha did I harp on about Kemper too much :) hopefully not, as it does deserve a mention now and then. Come on Kemper, the grandfather simulator needs new hardware... and Mr endless (I had to say it) thanks for watching too!

I have a Strymon Iridium in an ampless setup (I'm in a 5 piece rock band and reducing stage volume is a big help for us playing small-to-medium size venues) and I'm looking at one of these versus my Iridium. They seem very well built, but I've never had a Strymon pedal fail on me either, and one of them costs the same as an Iridium, which does Fender/Vox/Marshall and cab sims with custom cab/ir stereo options. Hard to judge off youtube demos which 'sounds/feels better' (the Iridium or the the UAFX). It also makes me wonder why they couldn't put a Vox/Fender/Tweed all in the same pedal given it's fundamentally DSP driving each. I've also heard people raise an eyebrow at the plastic input jacks - curious on your thoughts about that given your praise for the build quality.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that it is hard to judge stuff on YT particularly tones etc. Strymon make generally good gear that's true and I have looked in those before - little to complain about certainly. On this UA pedal it just seemed different than the regular simulators I have checked out... and it 'felt' different when you play it. Obviously if you can get a chance to plug in then that is the best way, but sincerely, I tried hard to show the other stuff too that can be important and no-one ever mentions. One thing is that I WOULD buy this pedal again... which to be honest is not a common phrase I would usually mention. My guess is that they probably might have been able to fut it all 'in one box', but I also 'get it' that they could recover more revenue volume by making three different units... it makes sense if you were UA. In any case this one was a real 'dream' so I do think it met it's 'promise' of a reverb from 65. One thing... I found the reverb control offered a huge reverb and way beyond anything I could ever use... only the Fender 65 reverb could answer that and most likely they would like it. Thanks for the post Sam good points... and thanks for watching.

And the power requirements non stop frustrated me, I love changing set ups. I used to have a huge board. I dumped most of my pedals and am down to three or four. Plastic inputs? Well, that’s par for the course… Now I use a Mesa Boogie Mark V35 combo. No more five ODs or Boosts. Yea I get your set up, I haven’t been down that road. Good luck.

I’d like a review or thoughts on how this sounds live through a PA, which is what I’d buy it for. Very little out there on that in terms of reviews.

Hello and thank you for such an in depth review!!! you have a great feel reminds me of Carl Weathersby... Have a question, does the pedal sound just as good when played through a simple monitor and also how does it sound when played through an amp with the amp setting set to a flat clean tone, what I'm really asking is does it sound just as good as this direct recording, which I find very impressive.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 2 жыл бұрын
Well for the FOH direct that is dependent on the system, but when I tried it FOH in the system we have in this studio it sounded very good. For the amp I used a small SV20 from Marshall with it all 12 oclock and clean... it sounds pretty god to me, but do remember that I tend to usually play heavier stuff and my own 'want' (if you will) is for me to drive it all. I am sure that there are many 'tone hound' guys who love the Fender tones and for me to be entirely objective as to what they will love from the pedal through an amp is harder for me to judge but it still sounds good to me. Yes on the recording I changed nothing from what came out of the pedal... literally nothing. Thanks for watching... and I think its really a very good pedal.

@@tonymckenziecom Cheers mate, yes of course I understand that this is solely your opinion based on your equipment and your personal choice of preferred sound, but as all the reviews I’ve seen are more drawn towards the direct recording sound I am trying to get a feel for what it sounded like FOH when played at home, as I only play at home at low volume… I have an old Fender Cyber deluxe, which I like but I can’t get as close as I would like to those warm Fender tube break up sounds. I also have a large Roland PM-30 electronic drum amp which I use with my multi effects Mooer GE300 and Nux MG300, the Mooer is slightly better at achieving this sound but not as good as the Cyber Deluxe. So, I am thinking about getting one of these Dream’s to go either into my Cyber or through the Roland, as well as using it for direct recording. It seems to me that with this pedal I could get closer to the sound I’m after with my actual equipment rather than buying a Fender Mustang GTX amp which has 100’s of things I don’t need, as I just want a nice Fender funky clean, and Fender bluesy tube breakup tone with some occasional rock, I currently use only 3 sometimes 4 pre-sets on my Cyber cos that’s all I need being a 70’s music man listening to Funk, Blues, Soul, Rock and of course loads of SRV. Thanks

Well my guess is it depends on the amp and route through it... the amp and the speakers attached will have some sort of effect on the tone... certainly a consideration... and its not a really cheap pedal. I am currently reviewing a NUX pedal here: www.nuxefx.com/ampacademy.html and that is also a VERY interesting pedal, it has a twin reverb, a vibrolux also as well as 4 other simulations in the pedal all controllable and retails at about $199 or I think £179 - and its very well made too. My review is about a week or so away. Hope it helps...

Super content. Here's my question, can I just plug my guitar into this pedal and then plug the pedal into a SS amplifier and still get the Dream tones? Are there any special considerations to doing that? My goal goal is to, as simply, and cheaply as possible, get the tones from the Dream out of a conventional amp. Thanks

Ha - we have ALL bought equipment that often is not what it proclaims... of that there is no doubt. But less so when we buy gear that really does deliver on the 'promise' made in all those sales videos out there. I have considered taking a VERY close look at the neural DSP on a few occasions, but I have tended to shy away because of the cost. Similarly I DID look at Fractal Audio V2 and V3 but those were like the height of complexity really... not that suited IMO for 'normal' people! Glad you like the UA Dream... and I liked the Dream better than the Ruby really (But I'm no VOX player). The Dream is a pretty good pedal and sounds AND feels to me pretty much one of the best simulators I have tried generally, although the unit (quite rightly) is aimed at the cleaner styles compared to the metal stuff, where most sims don't quite hack it IMO. Thanks for the post because USERS of the gear comments are always good to hear. And thanks for watching.

Why not make these software upgradable? Buy one pedal with your choice of amp model; purchase software packs for the other amp models; have the editor update the pedal with one of the software model packs purchased. What are the hardware differences between the pedals, besides the labels, the two-way switch on the Woodrow vs the 3-way switch on the Dream and Ruby? My guess only the software model in ROM on an embedded chip which isn't user updatable by design. Source Audio One Series allows software changes; buy the OD pedal, load the Fuzz or Distortion software, for example.

Exactly... I was going to say that in the review but (ha I forgot!) thankfully you have mentioned that. It sounds really good... and for a price that is affordable it was surprising just how good it is. If you get chance try one... and thanks...

@@tonymckenziecom I’ve tried a few of these, in different iterations. Yes, they are built beautiful. However, I’ll keep using my Mesa Boogie MKV35… I’m down to only 3 or 4 pedals. And HAHA one is the $89.00 sonic cakes rock stage multi effect pedal made in China. It took off one delay and my King of tone. The KOT is worth over $800.00 now…. I’ll keep it home….the sonic cake is perfect for a slap delay, some chorus and a nice Marshally boost. It’s not perfect but for live shows, who can tell?

Disagree, this review was very helpful, the most in-depth, and it's about a new set of products that are going head to head with a major part of the market (amp/cab simp) versus Strymon, Axe, Line6, etc. And given the way small/mid-size clubs are, ampless boards make a ton of sense, especially for rhythm guitar players like me.

Well I try hard to show what others don't. I understand if its not the 'right' format for some people though. But there are 'parts' of this video that could suit most players... whether its the pedal and its controls, the build and quality, the pricing or support, and of course the playing which I also included to show 'yet more' playing of the device (as if there is not enough examples on YT even now). I chose this pedal to review because UA are generally a good company for innovative products and studio gear and that pedal really does what they say I think. I have ZERO affiliation with anyone in connection with this video and it is as genuine a review as I can make. While my reviews are not 'perfect' no review ever is... as I cited in this review if you want 'just' playing or sales hype my videos are not developed for that - my video reviews will always be longer than most because they show so much more - in effect (sic) there is something for everyone who has an interest in this device. Check the text description and you can choose EXACTLY what you want to see by chapter and title. Hope it helps... and thanks.

That's a fair enough point. I guess they felt generally that the unit might reside on a pedal board for live use... and I know in the case of a studio environment like mine there is no need for a headphone output. Having said that there are other pedals from other makers with headphone out, but generally I do think many of those 'other' brands are not really 'pro' gear in the same way that this unit seems. But good point and thanks for posting that... and of course for watching.

Ha the telecaster was intentional :) I think the pedal is really aimed at the guys that love the old Fender stuff and it reminded me of a tone rather like Roy Buchannan (wish I could play like he did though). Yes I 'get it' about the pedals and they certainly are an acquired taste (depending on the pedal) - they all have seemingly very focussed styles and playing in mind. There are so many pedals out there... but this one 'in the room' so to speak was better than many I have used over the years. In any case Allan no problem ;-)
