They dont suck at all... They are good cheesesteaks... They use good meat, good Amoroso rolls. They are just quality and a bit above average. They are overpriced tho. BUT, the one thing I like about Pats and Geno's is their consistency, and their rolls are always fresh, no matter what time you go. I get it though, they have become a tourist trap, and they are ovepriced, so if you want to factor that in to donwgrade them, fine, but to say they "suck" is a bit absurd. And I have lived in South Philly for 38 years.

I wonder if social media is the only thing keeping places like this alive. Back in the day, historic restaurants that were once good but eventually the food started sucking and/or getting too expensive would just go out of business and would only live on as memories. Every time someone I know takes their first trip to Philly, they visit these places and post pictures on social media. It's almost "proof" they did indeed go to Philly.

The best Philly Cheesesteak in Philadelphia is a toss up between John of Roast Pork, Tony Luke's and D'Alessandros. D'Alesssandros finely dices the steak. The best bread on a Philly Cheesesteak is Tony Luke's. John of Roast Pork uses provolone instead of cheese wiz and surprisingly it tastes better. It's your personal choice but these are the 3 places with the highest ratings for Philly cheesesteak

Both are honestly terrible, but Pat's is less terrible. disclaimer: I'm not a PA resident and I strongly believe cheesesteaks should be American cheese. No place special, just a standard mom and pop place in the NE. Pizza, steak, cheese. When did God amend the Book of Genesis? There was also Jim's on South Street, Abner's if you are partying late night at Penn. But you got to eat the peppers like the pickles at Katz's!

Fun Fact: Pat and Harry Olivieri The original cheesesteak was credited to Pat and Harry Olivieri, two brothers who ran a hot dog stand near South Philadelphia's Italian Market. They're the iconic originals in Philadelphia, but they're both equally terrible. They have been passed on the fly now by any number of superior cheesesteak places in both Philly and South Jersey. Pats and Genos pretty much cater to unknowing tourists and the drunk, weekend, late-night club crowd. Although, from your video, it did look like Pat's up their game a bit with the chopped leaner meat. Back in the day, they both used the slabs of meat like Genos and it was also grisly.

It’s not Pats’s. It’s just Pat’s. And fried or raw onions are a preference. One is not better than the other. It’s what a person prefers.

I can't with Pat's or Geno's. I wouldn't tell anyone visiting not to try them, but they're mid at best, in my opinion. Are you still in Philly? Jim's Steaks on South just reopened this week! I'm not saying they're the best, but I used to live across the street, and they're my favorite. Have you reviewed Donkey's Place in Camden/Medford yet? It is a tad different from the traditional (the roll), but it is so good. Anthony Bourdain's favorite!
