I also used Drone Pilot Ground School, but good lord, he needs to get a pop filter. I had to download all the videos and edit the audio to get rid of the pops as it would just drive me crazy. If he wants, I will be happy to edit the audio to his videos because for $300 it was pretty awful quality.

Ed Ricker Vlogs do you need to have experience with a drone to take the test or can you pass the test and than get a drone?

Adam, I spoke with him and he's actually in the process of re-recording all of the videos, and the amount of videos will be going from 35ish to about 75 with better audio/video quality and branching away from the powerpoint slides. The new format will go live in February with new practice questions as well.

The Mavic pro by dji was what I been saving g for for ever, I love that thing, I know about the mavi 2, not in my price range, then I saw a clip of a couple going up the West coast and parrot gave them a drone to use and it blew me away. I know these aren't the drones you guys use, can you help me out, that my price range, should I keep saving? It's been forever I want my drone. Any advice? I see all the jokes coming. If you have not covered these topics yet I would like to suggest two: 1) the LAANC feature of the AirMap app, and commercial drone pilot insurance through membership with the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). These would compliment this video which completely addresses other suggestions I provided you earlier. Btw, I am working my way through a Part 107 Exam Prep Course by King Schools. 🤓👍🏼

The course provides a lot more value then just studying for a test and it will continue to be a great refresher and reference; I have not even finished exploring all of it and I am already very happy with their work. Thank you guys!

Hi Ed... it looks quite easy to get this permit in US if this is only knowledge test. In my country (Poland) to get UAVO (Unmanned Aerial Veh. Operator) only for VLOS (visual line of sight) flights beside test (incl. extras like flight physics) you need to pass flight test in ATTI mode (!). As a side note, you can not take Mavic to do the test as it flights only in GPS. This flight test requires you to perform predefined flight tracks in 30m x 30m square... like a circle around, hover over the centre pole, flight 8 inside this square, etc.... and this must be done with wind blowing (in ATTI)... so before the test beside studying and practising you have to pray for good, not too windy weather. Thanks for another good video!

@@D-Shuffl3 not too difficult. Make sure you take the practice tests. I personally took all the practice tests offered by DPGS and before taking my actual 107 I was getting 98s on the DPGS tests. Also remember to learn sectional charts. A majority of the test will be sectional charts so ensure that you know them well. If you feel confident and get good scores on the practice tests, and if you feel like you can read and interpret a sectional chart well, you should be perfectly fine. Good luck!!

Another suggestion would be having a customized website provided by GoDaddy and other providers so that the drone pilot can assemble a Portfolio of drone flights completed to validate the pilot’s skills, knowledge, and capabilities as well as provide an exclusive URL that can be indicated on any business cards the drone pilot may distribute.

Nice to see that the US certification process isn't as hilarious compared to some European countries. In my own country, Belgium, that kind of certification costs around 3000 USD. It includes multiple tests (written and practical). So you actually have to pay a couple of thousands of dollars to a school where you get theoretical and practical classes. When you do your exam you have to perform certain maneuvres in front of an instructor. Drones are put into a weight class which also define the maximum altitude and other rules for that class (flying around buildings, over crowds, etc). You might think that this kind of certification only applies for commercial flying, but no. Recreational pilots can't even fly their drones over an empty piece of public land. The only thing we're allowed to do recreationally is fly our drone over own backyard and under 30ft. If your drone has a camera it also has to be pointed downward to avoid breaking any privacy laws. If you want to fly anywhere else, fly over 30ft of even film ANYTHING, you have to get certified. I can't wait for my trip to the US later this year, even just flying it on public land will be amazing and a breath of fresh air to me. Overhere it's just a constant pain in the ass because every time you take your drone out you're breaking the law no matter what (unless you like to film your own lawn every day).

Not necessarily a certain amount of questions will get a passing grade on every test. That is what i thought when i took the test the first time and got 45 right 15 wrong, 75 %. And failed. I called the testing facility back after figuring this out and they agreed that it seemed as if i should have passed so they gave me the number of the place that scores the test. And they told me that the questions are of different values and that is why 75 % right did not necessarily mean passing, so i learned that and the experience for my $150. Took it two weeks later and passed with flying colors !!

the airspace aspect of this probably is the most complex subject for candidates to grasp- Operating control towers are surrounded by a 4 nautical mile (radius) Class D airspace- Class D, becomes class E and G airspace, Class E from 700ft Above ground level and above, but Class G (uncontrolled) from 700 ft AGL and below., within this control tower radius. Why is it still controlled when there is no tower? Because area radar facilities are able to monitor or (protect) the airspace even when the tower is closed for arriving and departing IFR traffic that are still legal to fly into the airspace.

Soooooo, basically you pay to practice the test. pay to take the test, and if you pass you will have to pay again to take the test every 2 years... also since I would be into fpv I would have to also get a FCC technicians radio license all so I could use a google cardboard style headset to see what my drone sees! all that red tape for a toy?... also it cannot be because there are safety concerns since i can register my drone for $5 and fly the same places as long as i'm not making money which basically comes down to the government just making up another tax. I think i'll pass

Read the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The Federal government does not have the mandate to regulate drones, or most everything else they control. They illegally gave themselves the power to do so, by stealth. A permit fee here, registration there, and before you know it, they take your right from you. Ten years ago, they tried to wipe out model rocketry, by classifying the engine component as an explosive, and thus demanding an explosive permit, and with it, an explosive storage facility, all in costing a couple of thousand dollars, just to possess a $15 rocket motor. Most hobbyists would never even qualify for the explosive permit, let alone afford to do so, thus our hobby was destined to be regulated out of existence. The rocketry organisations fought back. Took the ATF to court. And beat their ass. People have the power, if they can afford to defend their rights. "Oh but its just $5, and I am responsible, doing nothing wrong....." Cowtailing to the government, at any level, is your first step into the slaughter house. Grow some balls, and say no. The government works, 'for us'. When did the mighty United States of America, become scared of their own shadow.......?

There is an incredible amount of stupid comments in this section, that makes me cringe at flying actual airplanes. If you can't afford your 107 like the people doing actual work with their investments, you shouldn't be flying. Understanding how the airpsace functions around you is absolutely crucial. The truth of the matter is yes, you can bring down a low flying helicopter or airplane with your phantom. Do your research, learn your shit, pass your test THEN fly for money. You expect large clients to hire you with no 107? What's that say about your work ethic to them? Every larger scale job I've done proving a 107 has been part of the hiring process. You will never see the same level of jobs the certified pilots will have access to without one.

I know this is gonna sound soft but honestly, I've read a few comments and after flying my mavic air for the first time the other day and wanting to get into the $$ side of it, it's hard to know which direction to go when getting certified. I'd like to save $$ but some folks are writing this, some writing that. Sigh.

Hi! Is it better to get familiar with the drone you plan on purchasing before getting licensed or is it necessary? Also, do you recommend a videography course? I have some goals in mind and trying to organize which ones I should begin with. I appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks a bunch!

What about for the recurring exam which is every 2 years correct? Also, do they provide material for that or is it the same as the original exam?

Niles Timm, why do you feel that you owe him an apology for not using his affiliate link?? Also why do you feel you need to register your RC copter with the federal government? You got some local beat cops in your area that like to enforce federal law?

Liam Gallagher I had talked with Ed and stated that when I signed up with the class that I would use his link it helps support a youtube channel that I like . And as for registering the drone it has to be registered to qualify for part 107

This may be a stupid question, but is it crucial to own a drone prior to getting the 107 license? I don’t have a drone, but i’m interested in forming a hobby and making money commercially. Any help on where I should start would be appreciated. Should I buy a drone the fly it recreationally first to gain some experience or can I go ahead and study and take the test then buy a drone?

Thanks, Ed. It does take a long time to get the hard copy. I took the test in Aug and it is now Nov and still no card. I have the temp though and am making some money. I did all my study from the free online stuff though I would imagine my grade would have been better with the Ground school deal.

Well, I do not want to argue about if I need the license or not. I want to argue about this: What category does the commercial drone classification? I read online that says "Commercial Drone - Drones providing aerial surveying, photography, building inspections, etc.". However, what about this: I have a web design and company. I offer to take photos of my clients work or outside shoot of the building using my EOS camera. I do not charge for this service and do not offer photography services. I only use it to support my webs design company and bring more clients as the taking photos is a plus feature. Now, I would like to start using a drone instead of the EOS camera to get this shoots. Again, I do not charge to do the drone and it does not affect the price to build the website, it is optional if my client wants it and I do not offer to do any drone work individually. It is part of the web design package. The question: using the drone for this purpose count as a commercial or not? and do I need to take the test or online registering my drone is enough for that?

Hello, The real difference is recreational or non-recreational. So technically that sounds like non-recreational since it is still in furtherance of a business. So that's how the FAA would treat it...I'm not advising you, just letting you know.

You mentioned that as a part 107 certificate holder you have to register each of your drones individually. What if you have several but would only use one for commercial use?
@warmfreeze

you can have a single 336 registration for the rest... and a 107 for your commercial drone.

So what happens if you’re not 16? Do the rules about needing a license not apply to you, or do you just have to wait until you’re 16 to fly commercially
