Taking a Tour of the Mother Motherland Statue in Kyiv

As Eurovision 2017 in Kyiv draws near, we, at UATV, decided to take our international views on a tour around the Ukrainian capital. Today we'll give you a tour of the Mother Motherland statue. At 102 meters tall and 560 tons, it's one of the biggest in the world.

this statue was builded by USSR by decision of Moskow. and doesn't have anything common with Ukraine. Motherland is USSR. It was done by people of USSR and for people of USSR, and doesn't have anything common with people of novadays Ukraine, with those of Ukrainians who worship Bandera , nazi

Did European countries "change history" when they destroyed Nazi iconography after WW2? I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to get rid of the symbols of your former oppressor. And it's not like they're touching the WW2 memorial/museum below the statue.

did you know that statue in Russia is not only one? it is part of triptych . there are 2 another statues - one in Magnitogorsk, Ural mountains, " тыл - фронту", where a worker gives Motherland the sword. in Volgograd Motherland calls her sons. and the last statue in Berlin , saves Germany girl, and lowers the sword above swastika - Nazi symbol, as the sign of Victory above fashizm. so it is grear statue, three in on

Yikes. Take your hate and xenophobia for Ukrainians elsewhere. Both the Motherland Monument in Kyiv, Ukraine and the Motherland Calls statue in Volgograd, Russia were designed by Yevgeny Vuchetich. And by the way the Motherland Monument is taller, so that makes it the tallest statue in Europe. Respect to Ukraine from the USA.

I hope not. Its a interesting piece of history. Interms of the word "motherland" and the conflict of the idea of religion, since communists thought religious people were exploiting working people, so they persecuted orthodox christian priests and murdered, and basically tried to supress it in a sense. So inorder to have replace new belief in something, Motherland was just that. So its just interesting part of history i think

Personally, when it comes to Soviet monuments, if it is monuments to say Lenin, Stalin, etc, you may take them down. But taking down WWII monuments in honor of those who fought and died fighting fascism crosses a big line.

Not really, Eastern Ukraine are in habited mostly by Ethnic Russians, they have tried to seperate from Ukraine since a few years ago, before the invasion, the symbol simply means the unity between industrial workers and peasants.
