In this video, we'll walk through how to register your drone with the FAA for $5 and what to do if you're registering recreationally vs. commercially, what to do if you're registering a drone on behalf of your company, and more.
** From Kevin at the FAA - "The FAA DroneZone portal has been updated to incorporate Remote ID information. The update requires a registrant to indicate if their drone is Remote ID equipped or not. Currently, there are NO drones that are equipped with Remote ID. Although there are blogs and other sources which may claim differently, the FAA has not approved any Means of Compliance (MOC) for Remote ID at this time. If a registrant selects 'Yes' to the Remote ID equipped question, they will be required to enter additional information, including a serial number. The serial number needed is NOT the drone's serial number, rather, it's the Remote ID serial number (which doesn't exist). Entering the drone's serial number will not be accepted and not allow the drone to be registered." **

Thank you for this informative step-by-step video. Quick question, I registered my drone under Part 107 in my own name, since I will be using it both recreationally and commercially. If in the future I do want to create my own freelance business with my drone, will I need to select Add User, and proceed with my business name under the Part 107 Administrator role? Is this Add User tab mostly for others who are going to be flying my drone either recreationally or commercially? Appreciate your time!
@uavcoach
@uavcoach 2 жыл бұрын
Sara, thanks for your comment. Yes, the Add User would be for another individual flying your drone. When you have the name of your LLC, you can update your existing user profile if you'd like, but there's no requirement to do that if you're the only one flying that drone. Hope this helps!

Non-Recreation also includes Religious Events/Organizations even if done for free and also filming your sister, brother, friend, cousin, etc. wedding event. @uavcoach
@uavcoach 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the FAA has done a great job clarifying their language around what 'non-recreational' means. It was confusing for a while, but it feels a lot clearer now. From their website - "Non-recreational purposes include things like taking photos to help sell a property or service, roof inspections, or taking pictures of a high school football game for the school's website. Goodwill or other non-monetary value can also be considered indirect compensation. This would include things like volunteering to use your drone to survey coastlines on behalf of a non-profit organization. Recreational flight is simply flying for fun or personal enjoyment."

@@uavcoach thank you for clarifying that. I work in civil engineering and we just like to look at areas along our beaches before a project starts. The video/pic is not sold or used for the actual client. Just for our reference. So I am assuming that is under the recreational label?

Even if you mostly are flying recreationally, if you plan to fly even once commercially, I'd go ahead and get the drone registered commercially. Registering commercially satisfies the recreational registration requirement, so you don't have to register it both recreationally AND commercially. And you don't need to have your Part 107 certificate to register your drone commercially, but you'll want to get certified before you fly for commercial purposes. "Registration" and "certification" are two different things - regardless of how you're using the drone, it needs to be registered per the guidance in this video. But I think you're asking about the Part 107 certification and whether or not you need to get your FAA Remote Pilot Certificate - short answer is yes, if you have any intention of monetizing your KZbin channel, that would be considered non-recreational in nature, so you'd want to get certified (and to register your drone under the Part 107 rules and not recreationally). Hope that makes sense!

Hi there, congrats on the DJI Mavic 3. I'm having a ton of fun with mine right now. To make a long story short, there are zero drones that are remote ID compliant at this time. When registering your drone, select "no" for now when asked about Remote ID. By September 2022, we should have more clarity from both the FAA and drone manufacturers like DJI as to what our next steps are as pilots.

On the website after i registered there was no option to add my drone model. But an authorization of some sort that requests 'operation title' (no idea what to put there as im just flying for myself) and job type of field inquiries required, such as times, days, and reasoning for your flying.
@uavcoach
@uavcoach 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Yes, the recreational registration process is slightly different in that you're not registering a specific model. You're paying $5 for one number that can be applied to multiple drones for a 3-year period. I believe the authorization form you're referencing is for controlled airspace authorization. That's not required for this registration process, but if you need to fly in controlled airspace, you can follow the steps in your FAA Drone Zone dashboard to request clearance.

I'm a little confused and hope you can clear it up. I want to get the Dji Mini 2 but a little worried and want to get a few things clear if you can. It's under the 250g registration requirement and I would be flying it for recreation. I ran across a video of someone that had one, posted videos to youtube, and because he had ads on his channel, he said he got in trouble with the FAA because even though he was only making a small amount of money, it was still considered "Commerical Use" and considered it "being used for a business for making money". If I have a youtube channel, show drone footage but no ads on that video, but ads on other videos I have without the drone, will the FAA have a problem with that ? If say I decide to get a bigger drone, or register my drone just to be safe even if it's under 250g, and register it "I fly under part 107 or as a public aircraft" it say's " ... apply for a waiver/authorization under part 107 ... " If you register the drone under that, do you have to take the part 107 testing ?
@uavcoach

Hi Danny, thanks for reaching out. If you turn off ads for your drone-specific KZbin videos, that seems like a good, safe position to take. You can register the drone "under Part 107" if you'd like, but I would only do that if you plan at some point in the future to get your license. If you have any more questions, shoot us a note at support(at)dronepilotgroundschool(dot)com and we are happy to help.

You would mark "no" - The FAA made this change a few weeks ago. I wish they wouldn't have, as it's a bit premature and confusing for folks! Thank you for surfacing in these comments, and I'll add a note to the description of the video. Here are some more notes from Kevin Morris at the FAA - "Drone registration update: The FAA DroneZone portal has been updated to incorporate Remote ID information. The update requires a registrant to indicate if their drone is Remote ID equipped or not. Currently, there are NO drones which are equipped with Remote ID. Entering the drone's serial number will not be accepted and not allow the drone to be registered."

"Registration" and "certification" are two different things - you do NOT have to take a test to register your drone through the FAADroneZone website, but you DO have to take a test if you plan to fly under the Part 107 regulations as a commercial (AKA non-recreational) drone pilot. If you need to fly higher than 400 ft. AGL or beyond visual line of sight, then yes, at this time you would need to not only become certified under the Part 107 regulations, but you would need to apply for additional waivers.

Then you should pass the Part 107 test to get your license for an unmanned aircraft. Unless your drone is a toy which weighs less than 250 grams (0.55 lbs) and you never plan to monetize your channel
