The way to get better at welding is by doing, and these projects are exactly that. If you stick with the mantra: "weld bright shiny metal" you won't go wrong. The mill scale is also crap to weld. As my father in-law says, " Your last perfect weld is just practice for the next one."

I spent the morning setting fire to a manky old silver shadow at work. Sills were 4 layers deep with patches in places. And the rest of it was made of filler. Chopped the lot off to start again. If it's any consolation, my welds look about the same as yours do on grotty old metal. Theres only so much cleaning you can do, and theres always a seam that oozes molten underseal into your weld. Guaranteed. Dont forget the new steel also needs the mill scale coating grinding off before welding regardless of what you cut it with. Maybe try grinding it off the metal before plasma cutting as a fun slag experiment. Superb job your doing of the uaz. Completely bonkers. Hats off for even thinking of a frontera box. It almost made me look on ebay for a frontera to b234. Almost.

That's a good point about mill scale on new metal. Welding grotty old cars isn't easy, I'm glad other people share my pain too 😁

Hi electric hot air gun is good to heat the under-seal and use a scrapper.

Looking good. Possibly a terrible idea, could you have put a kitchen fire blanket over the floor inside to stop any fires, or would that have just hidden them until raging?

nice work, what about a knot wheel in your grinder to remove underseal? (bit late now) also, I find a damp rag is handy when welding. Are you concerned about the axles? will they stand up to the extra torque?

I did have a go with a knot wheel but it was slow work so I went with the fire option instead 😃 I'm not too sure about the axles. They are allowed to break once then they are getting swapped out for Land Rover items.

I didn't think it would offer any benefit being removed. Also it comes on and off my ramp quite often so wouldn't want to tie it up by having the body removed.
