It's a parallelism. The father is at his breaking point. Like a lot of family tragedies, the insane pressure of his humiliating job in the corporate world has beaten him to the point where he wants to end it all, and probably take his family with him. And the song compares that to a monster arising from the depths of a Scottish lake, whose "shadow on the door" of the cottage implies impending destruction. The man is the monster, the monster is the man.

I see your point, and respect it, but I always saw this as an attempt to point out the insignificancies of everyday life when an entire species was wiped out as exemplified by the LNM and that same fate awaits us. MHO, no hate.

I like the analogy a lot. In high school, I always thought the Scottish monster was the Loch Ness Monster. Supposedly. I'm thinking Sting DID have the this alleged monster in mind when he wrote the song though.

Lex pretty much got the meaning of the song at the end. The verses are about a guy stuck in the grind of the rat race in a dead end job, whose family life is also a chaotic mess, and he feels like he's on the edge of some kind of breakdown; there's a foreboding sense that he may even snap because of all this. And then the chorus is about a dark monster rising from the bottom of the lake. Its based on Jungs concept of synchronicity which refers to two separate things that you can draw a connection between, but that aren't actually connected. The images of the monster at the bottom of the lake is in synchronicity with the feeling that there's something bubbling up inside this man because of all the shit he feels is wrong with his life.

Stuart Copeland on drums is a beast. And Andy Summers on guitar is providing some stellar atmosphere. And the lyrics, well, others have described them pretty well. From Sting himself: "There's a domestic situation where there's a man who's on the edge of paranoia, and as his paranoia increases a monster takes shape in a Scottish lake, the monster being a symbol of the man's anxiety. That's a synchronistic situation."

This song was deep and darker than many realized when it came out, even today, It's pretty obvious. He's about to murder the family. *He* is the monster. The monster is the hatred that's been festering in him, he's personified it. What he's "staring at" in the distance is the monster. i.e. He's envisioning it. Notice every time the monster is mentioned it's accompanied by the man staring, or watching, etc? Until the end, when he and the monster are both reaching to open the door... they have found synchronicity

The Police started as a punk band, and early punk typically had a BIG reggae influence, and the Police always embraced that… this is one of my favorite songs of theirs for sure!!! … basically a song about the growing, festering frustration with the ‘modern grind’ of industrialized life “packed like lemmings into shiny metal boxes”

This song has always reminded me of Michael Douglas in "Falling Down". The pressures and inconveniences of daily life finally cause the calm, quiet family man to snap. The noisy family in the morning, the grind of work, the daily commute. As he heads back to his home, the headache building, he becomes "the creature from the Scottish lake" and the song ends with him approaching the door to his house - much like the shadow on the door from the beast that crawled out of the loch. Hence, the "synchronicity." Not my favourite off that album, but still a good one. Take a listen to "Synchronicity I". Better yet, check out "Every Breath You Take" or "Wrapped Around Your Finger."

Yes, the Police were definitely a once in a generation act with a very unique sound. The way I interpret this song is that the father and the monster from the lake are somehow connected, hence the synchronicity, as they both have a similar progression through the lyrics. But then again I may be completely off base lol. Some other Police songs worth checking out are Invisible Sun and Can't Stand Losing You. As always, ya'll are killing it with these videos.
@Dooklawz
@Dooklawz 2 жыл бұрын
going on what I'd seen in the songfacts on this tune, the synchronicity taking place is the father, secretly despises his job, and his role at the factory that belches filth into the sky- harming the environment yet the company does not care about that at all, hence the picket/protest lines out in front of the factory protesting the factory's lack of effort on protecting the environment and at the same time...many miles away, coming up to the surface then ultimately crawling out of some remote Scottish lake is this creature-possibly an abomination of nature...emerging and signifying also it's own protest at the ever-present damage being done to the/its environment.

"Spirits in the Material World" is my favorite Police song, "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" is another good one. The Police was far more layered than your average pop band, they had some dark subject matter, they we're also excellent musicians. This was their last album and they were pretty much at each others throats by this time, Sting would go off to a successful solo act and even an acting career(he was in the original Dune).

Stewart Copeland (the drummer) was moved all around the world in his youth (rumor is his father was a spy). He spent a good deal of time in Lebanon, where he learned different rhythms. If you ever hear Stewart talk, he talks about moving the snare (backbeat) from 2 & 4 to 1 & 3. Which is the reggae feel you refer to. Most modern drummers refer to Stewart as one of the top five (maybe ten) rock drummers of all time. He sits at number two for me, right behind The Professor (R.I.P.).

Yes, the story is of Daddy and the stresses of society causing him to become The Monster. The two parts (stories of Daddy’s day and The Monster stirring and coming to the surface) are fairly well separated on the song with the different guitar voices and come together (synchronized) at the end. I always enjoyed the stories even if the guitar was a bit brash for my tastes. Being in high school in the early eighties my top 3 bands were The Police, The Who, and Rush.

Brad & Lex thanks for checking this one out - I love watching your reactions because you keep it real. This is one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. The syncronicity here is the seemingly unconnected events of the monster rising from the depths and the monstrosity of daily living for the family (especially for "Daddy" in this case as his life sounds like a nightmare and this is what is relatable to most modern people driving in thick traffic everyday and going to jobs where you are tempted yet made to feel insignificant). Jung talked about "acausal" connections where two events can be meaninglfully "connected", even if they don't seem to be sharing a cause your typical scientist could measure with his or her instruments. The song isn't about feeling good even though it's a pleasure for me to hear the Police's music (great songs! They have a lot more reggae indfluenced material on earlier albums). What makes the song extra scary is that it seems to say, not only is the world a horror show with cryptids coming out of Scottish Lochs and people driving their cars like "lemmings in shiny metal boxes" and factories "belching filth into the sky" but there is an acausal factor to all of this we can't even fathom.

Thanks for listening to my request! 😃(when I asked for this in the Every Breath You Take reaction!) This is the hardest sounding Police song! 🎸 Straight hard rock but with sensible lyrics. The chords of this song are the same as in Money for Nothing. Sting 🐝is the co-writer of the other song, what else do you expect? ! L🤣L Speaking of sad, if you look at the album Synchronicity, the song that follows this is Every Breath You Take. Suggested next Police song: Synchronicity I. You will get a better sense of Synchronicity II when you react to this song. And do research Karl Jung and synchronicity. Sting is fascinated by him. Sting was a teacher of English literature before he became a member of The Police.

Lyrics or not, this song is powerful, the musicianship superb and the sound.....like nothing before. Whether or not you are listening to the words and trying to determine their meaning, Sting really belts out the lyrics and his voice is very synchronized with the melody and beat. His tone alone paints a dark picture. Andy Summer's guitar has a manic sound to it, with powerful chords and great timing and space. The power of this song can be heard and felt Many Miles Away.

I think that there is a certain amount of openness to interpretation with this song, but I do believe the synchronicity has to do with the father and the creature. This is definitely one of those songs where you have to do a lyric video because it is a complex story. My take on it is that daddy is on the verge of losing it every day, but on this particular day, he moves from someone on the verge of becoming a monster to a full fledged monster. The scene that is happening simultaneously with the creature could be a representation of the feelings and thoughts that are rising up and taking him over, or it could be the irony of an actual monster approaching this home, just as he is about to do the same. I really don't know which I believe it is, but I have a feeling that the dude snapped when he walked into that house. I love the use of the monster or creature in this song because it definitely makes you realize that something very bad happens without ever being told what the father does. It's almost like the father and creature are mirror images.

That was the beauty of The Police...very diverse and creative in their sounds. It cracks me up that you thought maybe they were only Island in their sound. It was a big influence in their early albums though. Bring on the Night will take you back to the island sound but Demolition Man, Synchroncity I, King of Pain, Spirits in the Material World, Hungry for You, Next to You, Walking in Your Footsteps, Wrapped Around Your Finger, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, and Don't Stand So Close To Me show how varied they are in sound. You REALLY need to do Every Little Thing She Does is Magic and Bring on the Night soon.

The Police were a great group. Punk reggae one minute. And then new wave rock the next.

So glad you guys did this one.. you have again been listening to me and my requests.. LOVE IT!!!! my interpretation of this song is the father is at wits end but he has to go back to his hum drum blaise blaise life as a white collar worker and he puts this family scenario from a Point of View of a small child maybe a boy (Sting) as a child and what he actually went through with the drama of his family life against the backdrop of Humans living or eeking out a living for 'the man'' so to speak..my favorite lines in it are Packed liked Lemmings into shiny metal boxes in a suicidal race... and that is exactly what the Globalists elite families have us all doing eeking out a living in a Car a traffic jam running the Rat Race as Bob Marley used to sing...Overall i don't have a clue as to what the creature in the Loch Lake is , my educated guess a reference to NESSI, or the Lochness Monster .i think..Overall the video is much better in my opinion but I am glad you took the time to read and hear the lyrics first..... to get what he was saying...

For years I heard the song but didn't truly listen to it. I liked it because I'm a drummer and Stuart Copeland is one of my drum gods. But I never knew what the hell Sting was singing about... until about 20 years ago when I truly listened to it. In a sense, he was describing me LOL.

The song is clearly about his job life and then real life which is nature. The song goes from his problems in the world but then is contrasted with the serenity of something natural represented by the lake, the creature walking out of the slime, and shadows of the cottage.

The man IS the Scottish Loch. He remains calm through all this turmoil, but something is stirring within. Dude about to snap. The monster in the lake is synchronous of his feelings within.

Great band. Stewart Copeland's fantastic drumming drives these songs. My personal preference is actually Synchronicity I but every reactor always listens to II. This whole album is good. So is Zenyatta Mondatta; self titled Police album and Ghost In The Machine. Lots of good stuff for you guys to dig into. If you want a very reggae vibe check out Walking On The Moon.

this is one of my favorite Police songs, the musical build up and the lyrics really play off each other, awesome transitions, up tempo throughout the song, unique guitar work by Andy Summers, grungy sound, before grunge ... the guy's torment begins at the breakfast table, where he begins his ascension to the surface, from the depths of the loch... by the time he gets off work, he climbs out of the loch, which seems to symbolize his struggles and misery... by the time he gets home, the events of the day have transformed him from Dr David Banner to the incredible Hulk haha ..... he probably takes more nagging abuse at home, and finally swims back to the bottom of the dark Scottish loch to finally find some peace and quiet ... after all of the build up and great story, at the end of the song, it is revealed that he is in fact the being crawling out of the loch... tomorrow, he turns into Bill Murray from Groundhog Day, does it all over, again ... this song never gets old... Sting sounds terrific, great story teller, the lyrics always make me chuckle... and Stewart Copeland, as always, is one of the greatest of all time at his craft... this is a one-of-a-kind, true 3 piece band ... the title of the album, Synchronicity is based on the work of Cark Jung.. the title of the song doesn't have anything to do with the lyrics, which I guess can actually be loosely connected to the concept of synchronicity, if you look it up .. Note: Sting was an English teacher, and has probably read a book or two in his time ... a lot of his lyrics are political and have some depth, he references literature, here and there... "Just like the old man in that book by Nabokov"

The songs Synchronicity, Synchronicity ll and album Synchronicity were named after a book and philosophical idea by Carl Jung that the members were into. During that period several 80's artistes brought their pet philosophy forward into their music, sometimes naming albums or songs after them, eg Songs From The Key Of Life by Stevie Wonder, Dream lnto Action by Howard Jones, Sounds From The Big Chair by Tears For Fears, or the band name Devo which was named after the concept of De-evolution/Devolution. lt awed us that our favorite musicians were also deep thinkers 🙂

Life...in all it's forms (work, play, family, home) all comes back to that monster in the lake. That Scottish Lake is where the elusive Lochness Monster (never ever seen but imagined) lives in Daddy's head, life in all it's forms.

There are two parallel stories being told. One reality based (the main story) and one metaphoric (the Scottish lake).
