Great video kodi. I am about to build a home network using omada which will include a router, Poe+ switch , 4 access point , a Raspberry pi4/Hp thin client t620 running Docker for Omada controller and Home assistant. I have learnt quite a few things watching your video. Hope you do some more videos on Omada especially about firewall rules for IOT and Guest. Keep up the great work man!

Thank you!! I'm glad someone finally did. I've been wondering if the silence from content creators about the similarities of these two ecosystem was being "enforced" by either one of these companies. It can't be pure coincidence that these interfaces are so alike! Thank you!!

Thanks indeed! I would love to see a detailed comparison of the multi-WAN possibilities with regard to failover, load balancing, and policy routing (assigning VLAN X to WAN Y). Even though I understood the UDM Pro is currently limited to failover only - one of the reasons why I'm considering TP-Link instead.

Hi Cody, Thanks for the video. I would like to have an opinion from you. Since you are more a Ubiquiti than the TP-link kinda guy, would you recommend deploying the Omada ecosystem to a medium size campus? I just inherited this IT position at the local non profit organization. Currently we have the Cisco Meraki ecosystem which we want to get rid off because of the expensive recurring licensing.

Thanks for the video Cody! I appreciate the information and material on the TP-LINK Omada ecosystem. I hope TP Link is watching. I'd appreciate a comparison to show where TP Link comes up short in a smart home with IoT devices in their own VLAN. Without mDNS and a few other features, I haven't been able to get the setup I've seen from many others with the Ubiquiti gear. Its very unfortunate. Hopefully your channel can get their attention.

I feel your pain, I'm in the same boat. I ended up shelving all my Omada gear for now and switched to Unifi because TP Link didn't have any plans to address the issues anytime soon when I asked support. Hopefully they pay attention to their own forums and comments on videos like this. Maybe then they'll realize it's important to address these problems if they don't want to lose customers.

Hey Kodi, feels like this video is ready for a 2024 remake. What would say? things that come timing, is faster Fibe speeds, like Bell Puere Fibe 8. The ER8411 is capable of 10Gbps with PPPoE. UDM-SE or any unifi is capped at 3.5Gbps. Only the EdgeRouter Infinity can go to10G, and that's not unifi.

I don’t know why both vendors can’t include a switch into their hardware controllers? Instead we are forced to have another box in our setup. The controller is basically all software not requiring any specific hardware to run.

You are correct. Controllers are 100% software and can be hosted on many different devices or in the cloud. Both companies offer a range of switches. So I'm not sure what your question is.

If you want a switch, buy a fucking switch and host the controller on your computer - if you don't like the controller, you don't have to buy it - just run the controller on your desktop or nas or whatever computer you have - it doesn't even have to always be on or at the location, you just need it toset up the hardware, you can have it monitor but that's not requeiured

Hi Cody, after watching your video I noticed you based your hardware comparison on spec. Especially you choose an 1st gen Unify switch which hooks up the most to the TP Link. I understand your choice but you could also compare between current models and their advantages or based on price. I did like the fact that you can specify if a port acts as a WAN or a LAN port on the Omada switch if I am not mistaken. Maybe you can also do a follow up video on where you would use either system for your clients. This would also be helpful for a company to choose which system to buy. Unify indeed provides limited VPN possibilities but they work very well. Based on your video I am not sure if the extended capabilities of the Omada works as good or even better. These are suggestions for follow up video's, not critism at all. I hope you plan a follow up video for this series. This is very interesting so thanks a lot for your insights already. Keep it up Cody and stay safe. And guys... give this video a like :)
@sbretclark
@sbretclark 3 жыл бұрын
Not to rock the boat, but this video is worthless for anyone who can read - you just read through the spec sheets. Without a comparison of real world performance and all in cost, or even your honest opinion of which brand is better, you're wasting everybody's time. For example, you noted that tplink has more vpn options, but what we need to know is whether that means tplink is a better vpn option, all things considered. Without info like that, your videos are a waste of time.

@wernerdebijl1885
@wernerdebijl1885 3 жыл бұрын
@@sufyspeed This is from the Unify documentation: You can enable Fast Roaming by creating (or editing) a wireless network under Settings > Wireless Networks > Edit (or Create) > Advanced Options. Fast Roaming allows certain devices with 802.11r capabilities to potentially roam more quickly. However, older devices may experience connectivity issues due to their lack of 802.11r client-side support or compatibility. Select this option with caution. So I guess you are right and this is in beta. However it is not working flawlessly for my iPhone or Windows computer when moving up and down the house. But other opinions would be helpfull indeed.

Seriously speaking both of them are garbage as both of them run behind their cloud infrastructure even though unifi can be run via local controller but still too much outside control!!! Also the $$ guys if you are doing home lab or small business and you need to control budget get Mikrotik switches and gateway(router/firewall). AP you can get either but with that you can have more control on your network and you can block unifi and TPlink snooping in your network!

Mikrotik has it's own set of issues - router os is ok but switch os is weak ass - but fits some circumstances. If you'd lwatch the video to you would know that tplink has a controller that can be totally self hosted with no registration with tplink - whereas unify requires registration now.
