I found this album after spotify went on random after finishing Caligula by Lingua Ignota and it send me straight into Please Don't Leave Me. I nearly pissed my pants. I stopped everything i was doing, listened to this album and fuck me. I'm also a trans woman, who lives near Uboa, this album spoke to me on so many levels. Your comment about finding this cathartic really made me realise it's not for everyone as i showed it to a co worker and they were horrified to the point where they were visibly upset. Fucking love this album
@Vandalgia4 жыл бұрын
I'm not a trans, but I suffer with depression and severe trust issue and I totally get your and your co-worker feelings, Please Don't Leave Me is a crazy piece and extremely distressing. But I really love the album as they also speak to me, maybe not as the same level as it is to you. Listening to them makes me confused and extremely uncomfortable, although it had this cathartic quality to it.

i'm a trans guy in melbourne and i found it while on a train. it was one of those moments where i found something that really spoke to me in a way i'd never experienced then and since. I don't even like ambient but its just perfect.

Almost exactly the same experience. I just finished Girl with Basket of Fruit and it switched to Please Dont Leave Me. I could only sit through 25 seconds but those 25 seconds have completely contorted my views on experimental music. I thought Lingua Ignota and Xiu Xiu and Daughters were about the limit of experimental music. But wow. What the fuck is this album as an album? 25 seconds of this thing has torn me to shreds. I think the way she ended the record was very creative. It brought the record full circle, very much like how you would feel coming out of a deep depression. It builds on the first track, signifying development or progress, but refuses to bring a satisfying end to the record. Because true depression really never goes away. You just get better at dealing with it.
@ahri38875 жыл бұрын
I love at the end where it sounds like she's getting up from a keyboard and just... walking away. Without leaving an answer. She just leaves.
@michailchambers5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's BS. Depression can reach a point of non-existence in a person. The reason it's so hard to overcome by most people is because they either try beating it into submission or detach from it; both just means of avoidance. Spiritual practices done the right way allows one to confront everything in the psyche that aids negativity and the accompanying energy. In time everything that isn't congruent with ur well being looses it's hold.

A little bit more context for the middle part of that record (or at least how I interpreted it) cause it was the part I identified with super heavily: Epilation Joy is the first calm bit of the record, and the reason for that is not only good timing, but it's also the whole point of the song. The title "Epilation Joy" refers to her use of an epilator, which is a hair removal device that basically rips the hair out of your body, leaving you almost completely hairless afterwards. The big obvious caveat to this is that it's intensely painful, even leaving little red bumps on the skin for the rest of the day. A lot of transgender women, including myself, use it because body hair is an enormous source of gender dysphoria. However, because of the pain, and the depression that a lot of us tend to have, epilation has a second use as a form of self-harm. One can easily justify it to themselves because it doesn't leave any permanent marks, and of course, a large portion of society expects women to have nice smooth legs. Gender dysphoria amplifies the perception of this expectation, thus the desire to be entirely hairless. Self-harm is, at its core, a release of negative emotion. The physical pain takes away from the emotional pain. It's obviously an unhealthy way of going about it, but it's easy, fast, and addictive. The release that's given from self-harm is why Epilation Joy is a short reprieve from the intensity of the songs before it. Of course, being the unhealthy outlet that it is, the most intense part of the album is what directly follows it. The epilation joy gave Xandra an easy, fast, and addictive release, making the relapse of Please Don't Leave Me inevitable.

I listened to this whole album, knowing little to nothing about the genres involved in the project or the artist herself. But, after listening to the album, it was disturbing and rather soul shifting. The distortive noise and darkness of the album was mood darkening and scary in a sense. Definitely one of the more unique albums I have ever listened to considering mainly what I listen to is Kanye West, Bastille, Denzel Curry, Ski Mask, etc. Much of my own music discography is mainstream and pretty typical rap artists/ hip hop artists. But this album was an experience and rather compelling emotionally for a darker feeling.

What i told my friend after my first listen of this album, just a few days ago - 'well Uboa sure just messed me up. haven't been that affected by an album in a while. to the point of having a physiological effect on me. didn't cry (was tearing up though)... but rocking, heavier breathing/struggling to catch my breath, disorientated/a bit dizzy and confused... just totally lost in a very dark place. it's been half an hour after finishing and I still feel weird from that.' I think that... says it all. I am a very depressed, dysphoric, consistently isolated and generally unhappy trans woman so this album really really got to me. 'Profoundly disturbing and not for the faint of heart' indeed. An incredible, wonderful album, I love it so much. I haven't wanted to buy an album after first listen so fast in a while, nor have I felt an album was a 10/10 on first listen in a while. Thank you Xandra, I hope you're doing better now.
