Great video. A cool trick in mission 2 is when u climb the fence and steal the bat from the Williams then fall off that ledge to the other side. Walk to the enemy at the top to trigger him to walk just past the girder. Then climb the fence and go all the way to the other side and fall off the fence. Then climb the fence walk back towards the other side and fall again off the fence ( avoid falling into the pit). Walk near the girder and start hitting the punch or kick button. For some reason, the game glitches and it thinks a Williams will b there. If you do it right you'll hear a sound as if you're hitting something. You can do this and basically farm all the XP hearts and get all you're techniques. I know that's long winded and that I hope i explained it well enough.

The great thing about "The Invisible Williams Trick" is that you will have the level 6 elbow strike just in time to face the double Abbobos at the end of the forest section of Mission 3. 3 elbow strikes a piece will put them down real quick. Doesn't make a ton of sense, because it wouldn't seem like an elbow strike, irl, would inflict that much damage on a giant slab of meat like Abbobo, but that is video game logic for you.
@edwardknox9269

I was thinking this the moment that section came up in the vid! Its nice to know that other people still remember this trick! Going through the rest of the game fully powered up was so helpful.

Side scrolling beat em ups are some of the very best games ever created, and they helped to reinvent the arcades in the 90's! It was a glorious time to be a kid! I'm working on saving for a recroom masters kit soon, just to relive the original feel of these games. Even though i was largely in my PJ's jamming out on the carpet to some NES and Genesis, the arcade setup cannot be matched.
@dycedargselderbrother5353

Yeah, arcades were in critical condition when Double Dragon came along and the game led to a kind of silver age of beat 'em ups and, later, one-on-one fighters. Altered Beast, Golden Axe, TMNT, Final Fight, X-Men, Street Fighter II, and Mortal Kombat all basically originated from this point.

I would say that the best place to farm levels/EXP early on would be at 11:40 What you'd want to do is lure the enemy to the left side of those red girders, then while he is standing there, you climb back up the fence to the left. You should then walk to the left for a bit until you despawn the enemies. When you then make it back again, walk up to the area where you left the enemy and punch the air where he was standing. You'll then see your points and EXP racking up. You can do this until the timer runs out if you wish and quickly max out your level. Also, I have to say it "Fifty thousand!? You got fifty thousand on Double Dragon"

Your weapon disappears when the hitchhiker's thumb pops up, telling you to progress to the next area. So if you swing the bat for example, just as the thumb appears, the bat will glitch and take on the appearance of a rectangle with a cross on it. I always thought of it as a birthday gift. Like after knocking the guy out, he says "happy birthday" and throws a present at him. 😆

@11:30 there's a way you can max up your XP points by kicking an invisible bad guy. It involves dropping off the chain fence before the screen scrolls over, climbing back up and going all the way back to the left, then heading back...It's been years since I've played so I don't remember all the details. Also, if you pick up the Linda's whip as it's blinking, sometimes it turns into a bat with nails. You can then keep it up the tower and mash them.

This was the very first video of this channel I watched. I love the channel by the way. I'm surprised that you didn't include the experience gain exploit in Mission 2. On Mission 2, when you come to fence that you climb, knock down the first two Williams enemies & walk climb down from the fence & walk forward until the other Williams enemies come out. When the one on the top moves to the left side of the stack of beams in the background, climb up the fence & walk to the left. The enemies that you left behind will be gone. Walk to the edge & turn around & walk back to the right. You'll notice that the enemies are gone. Climb down the fence, but don't advance the screen too far. Walk to the left side of the background beams where that enemy was standing & start attacking. You'll gain experience points for every attack you land. I prefer to have the bat in hand when doing this. Once you've got 7 hearts, you can proceed at the maximum experience level.

Oh man so many memories! Can’t remember how many times I finished this game as a kid. My main strategy in this game was always just try to get to 4 hearts as quickly as possible by beating everyone to death using all punches in Mission 1, even the Linda with a whip which got tricky sometimes. I can get 4 hearts usually either by the end of Mission 1 or the start of Mission 2. Then just kneesmash-throw everyone to death. Usually got 7 Hearts already by the end of Mission 2, or start of Mission 3 so I could just throw any amount of elbows or mount-punches that I wanted. Not a fan of the whirlwind kick at 7 hearts though since everyone dodged it. Good thing it got upgraded in Double Dragon 2. First time, I’ve seen that Machinegun Willy trick, & that was pretty dope. From what I remember, there’s a certain distance that if you kick even just once, you immediately go into the Hairgrab manuever, your foot had to be aligned to their foot while they were lying down, & the moment they stand up, you kick them once & it goes into the instant Hairgrab. Worked on everyone except Jimmy for me, since he broke out of hairgrabs. For Jimmy, i just tried to spam kicks from range, thats not within hairgrab distance, the very tip of Billy’s foot isn’t hairgrab distance, the Billy’s foot has to be going into the enemy sprite to do the hair-grab. like your doublekick-elbow technique better though. More flashy. Love your videos man. Kudos to you & keep ‘em coming

Surprised at 11:38 you didn't show the trick how to level up completely. You get a Will enemy to walk up to the top near the steel beams. Just when he's about to the edge of the steel beams, climb back up the fence and go all the way to the left, then all the way back. You can hit the steel beams with punches, kicks, or the bat and just rack up points like there is an invisible enemy there. You can get full hearts by doing this.

I was hoping to show the evolution of your moves over the course of the game, but I still should have shown that trick. I could have easily cut away and demonstrated the trick, then went back to the run. Thanks for watching!

I was at the right ages for NES and SNES original releases. I remember the NES often could not duplicate graphics of arcade games. Technology, in only a few years between NES and SNES, improved a ton. I remember being so excited to actually play a game the way it looked in the arcade at home on the SNES. Street Fighter 2 for example.

Nice walkthrough man - I couldn’t get that trick with the Green Abobo’s working but honestly it’s very easy just to spam the back elbow there (I think maybe a touch more emphasis on how useful that attack is would help newbies) also cool tip I found out by accident; at 17:16 if you mess up there, get hit by dynamite or whatever, just go back out the door you came in and come back in - energy bar and clock reset again, no penalty at all. Great advice on the levelling system too, I tend to do the 3 punch and run trick you demonstrate at the start, throughout the whole of the first 2 missions, you can have all 7 hearts by the start of mission 3 and not have to worry anymore 🙂

There's a trick at 11:47 at the red steel bars were you must leave a enemy at the edge of the steel bar and then you go back and climb the fence and if you move to the left and return back to the steel bar the enemy will disappear and will allow you to hit indefinitely to get all the hearts easily.

I could never beat this as a kid. The instant deaths and or traps always drained my lives so I never got to learn the later levels. Two years ago when my son got a Switch for his birthday, we got him the NES/SNES library subscription and it was the first game I played on it. When I discovered there was a rewind feature and save states… I was like… ok, I’m beating this no matter what it takes, because really… you can’t fail. I gotta say, I don’t know if it’s the Switch emulation or I’m just old and terrible and out of practice… this game was STILL tough to beat for me, but I gotta say, it was satisfying to play it through even though I was cheating my balls off. Now… I didn’t have any of the strategies you shared at my disposal, but maybe this is one I revisit in the MiSTer.

Playing this game a lot back in the early 90s i remember playing and beating it solo a few times with Bimmy and found it awesome to be able to play it as jimmy as well but only if selecting 2 player mode so i would intentionally select 2 players when my friends were not around and let the first one die so i could play with the "red character" as i remembered it back then. Just a little extra that gave it replay value in those simple straight forward videogame times.

I seem to recall that elbows at level 6 are insanely strong. They were my go-to attack if you can't throw them off screen/into a pit (for an instant death).

I always level up quick on the chintais. Jump kick to knock them down, stand on their knees, then use the punch combo as soon as they get up. If you're close enough they won't be able to hit you.

More xp from kicking than using weapons. Less per hit, but many more hits. At 11:40, if you don't fight that guy and walk back to where you were at 11:34, you can go back to wherever the guy stopped walking at and kick the air for infinite xp. Great video. I didn't know how to not get shot in such an easy way. I tried to hair grab him while he was off either side of the screen. Not super reliable.

It seems like they always have a boss with a gun. It explains how he got to help run the gang. Everyone else just has to rely on martial arts prowess and whatever weapon they can find laying around. This was a hard one to rent from the store because it was so popular you never could find it.

Ah, yes. Good ol' NES Double Dragon. Only managed to beat it once, but still a great (and hard) game. Near the end of Mission 3, I like dealing with the Lindas that come out of the door outside by luring them towards the cliff on the left, and then nailing them with the "hair pull attack" and then immediately throwing them over the edge, on knee them 3 or 4 times in the face first, and then throwing them. Just to show how Billy Lee can be that way.

I remember in the first stage of double dragon 3 , when we're at the roof or balcony before we go inside to challenge the boss, my elder brothers told me to jump off the platform and then I'd come back up in a helicopter. I was so excited thinking it was some secret. Turns out they wanted their turn to come faster 🤣. We would play by turns.
