Uchimata No Gi and Gi - Throw with Both (BJJ/Jiu-JItsu/Judo)

In this video we’ll cover the difference between throwing with uchimata in the gi and throwing with uchimata for no gi. The throw itself is the same in many respects, but there are some key specifics that are NOT the same - and you need to be able to understand the differences if you're going to learn to use uchimata. When we're working with the gi, we have grips and handles we can use to lift our partner and bring them in optimal throwing position. These include the collar and sleeve, both of which let us rotate our partner’s upper body so the direction of our throw is accurate. These sorts of controls disappear when we start to work no gi, so we need to look for replacement grips - here we’re using an underhook and wrist control, although there are others as well. Leg and hip positioning do the power work in both cases. Grips make the difference - so understand them and you’ll be able to use uchimata in both gi and no gi scenarios.

I would get sleeve before lapel, and would pull up over, not to the hip for leg uchi mata in the gi.

Great video! do you have any advice in doing this when you are smaller and shorter? I have alot of issues trying to execute this on taller guys who can easily move their hip back or if they post and make themselves really heavy.

I find it difficult to perform uchi mata on the close leg or in between the legs when uke is taller than me. For me it makes for sense to go for the leg furthest away and do some kind of hane goshi.

Is this a particularly risky throw? Of all the common throws, the uchimata seems to demand the best sense of balance. Especially when I've seen it at high level, where the leg has to raise up like a ballet arabesque. And your head is pointing down to the mat; not good if you do lose your balance.

Good tutorials but i dont see how anyone will give you this position to the side, you should show how to do it from the front or from a slightly off center angle or off forehead to forehead position, pretty useless in terms of teaching how to land it
