Well, it confused me a bit. Did the name of the World Tour change? Otherwise, I can't figure out why the world tour teams were only referred to as "uci teams", whereas I'd think all professional teams are uci teams.

ugh UCI !! The point of points (pardon the pun) should be to help the fan follow the sport. PERIOD. Cycling needs to grow and create more and new interest, especially with its current team business model. Tennis does this wonderfully, and everybody follows and knows every player's ranking. Rankings are always shown, talked about, and competed for. It brings excitement to events, adds weight when a player has to defend or can grab a lot of points, and helps generate interest in players working their way up the rankings. In cycling, FANS don't care about points. And any changes to the system should be to help the fans, thus helping cycling. Two different rankings ? Seems confusing. In tennis everyone knows a grandslam is 2000pnts, a masters 1000, theyre even called a masters 1000 series, 500, or 250 ... Cycling, get this right !!!
@valleyflaneur5 жыл бұрын
Really useful to have this explained for the men's points - I have to say, though, women's racing deserves more than 'same principle but different numbers'. It would be worth taking the time to set out the values for different women's races -esp since they often get less attention.

It would make more sense if the uci resets the points at the start of each season and then they have an award for the winner of each category based off the points in which they earned in that given year. They could also incorporate something like a leader's jersey so that people know who is leading that category
@larsmunch45365 жыл бұрын
For the women they have something rather similar to what you are suggesting (maybe not exactly the same), so it should be possible to make it for the men as well.

Why doesn't the rainbow jersey go to the rider with the most UCI points? Then fans will want to keep track of the points tally, and it won't be decided by a single race.
@Lars35 жыл бұрын
I could be wrong but I think there used to be a men’s road race World Cup that featured a special leaders jersey. It wasn’t the same as the rainbow jersey of WC, but it came close to satisfying the need to identify the highest ranked rider at the time.

Isn´t it unfair for the other two Grand Tours, that the TdF is more valueble? It decreases the gap between those tours even more. In Germany for example the TdF is televised on public Broadcasting channels, whereas the Giro and the Vuelta only can be watched on Eurosport. And in my opinion the french mountains aren´t harder as the italian ones, and the Vuelta has yearly more summit finishes as the Tour. The spanish one also has less sprint stages, which makes exciting breakaway stages happen more often and days with GC changes could come more frequently. And the mountains are not divided into two three-day-blocks, but they are very well seperated between the three weeks.

I like Toastbrot personally I think it factors in that the Tour De France is a) the biggest cycling race in the world and b) attracts the highest quality of field

This helped me understand a lot, but it also has me kind of torn. Clearly the UCI is not afraid to be controversial because there are so many things to disagree on in a system this complicated. On the one hand it's good that there are incentives for different strengths and different types of riders and races, but on the other hand I struggle to see how you spread the sport to a wider audience with the system being so complicated. I wonder if it would make more sense to have separate leagues for different types of racing. A league for crits, a league for the classics, a league for stage races et. ... . who knows?

Personally the fact that i had to search this means its a bad model, as a fan thats want to know more about a sport it needs to be not complicated as this because we tend to get excited by the great cyclists at first (stages are too complicated when you are new to the pro scene) and we dont have a calendar for UCI races as a casual follower. And for a guy like, a ranking like in tennis would be really a goos way to track my favorite cyclists

@@spankofudgenudger9667 The procycling page says "Summation of PCS points over a 12-month + 2 weeks overlap period. Races are counted once. After the finish of a stage, the corresponding stage of the previous edition is excluded." So it is a rolling total, moving forward as each race comes around in the new year. This type of system is used in many sports, e.g. football, golf, tennis

This is how you know there is an English bias in cycling. First Sagan is disqualified because an end of his career Englishmen crashes out, now they turn everything into the premier league. Not only that this will encourage trade team mates to support their leader in the Olympics and world championships, if they were not doing this already.

Just found the UCI points table for 2019. Right now in 3rd place is Simon Yates!!!!... As far as I can recall... He has not raced yet in 2019????.... And he is coming 3rd. To me this just goes to show the level of professionalism within the UCI. It does feel like a bunch of amateurs run the show ... And this is indicative of tardiness and just crap staff... IMHO.
@larsmunch45365 жыл бұрын
If the points are reset at new year, you are right, but if it like the world ranking in tennis, where points are valid for one year = 365 or 366 days, most of the points from 2018 are still valid, and in that case it can make sense. Also see eddy maddix' answer to Spanko Fudgenudger above (under Matthew Sully's question).
