UCLA Apartment Tour at Venice/Barry - Graduate Student Housing

Follow along as I take you through my 1bed/1bath apartment in UCLA Graduate Student Housing at Venice/Barry.

WHAT'S OUTSIDE / IN THE AREA
-Apartment complex is in a nice area called Mar Vista
-UCLA Shuttle bus comes approximately every hour and goes directly to campus ~30 min/trip
-Sunday Farmer's market 3 blocks away
-Apartment complex is a 5-minute drive away from whole foods, trader joes, ralph's, mitsuwa
-multiple taco trucksssss few blocks away
WHAT'S INSIDE?
-Lobby perks: UCLA has volunteers that pick up food (near its sell-by date) from nearby local grocery stores and they drop it off in the lobby for residents to take for free! (items include bread, produce (lots of it: veggies, fruits), flowers, pre-packaged foods, pastries, etc.)
-Additional perks: Residents often leave random things in the lobby during their moveout, which other residents may take! I've taken furniture, stuffed animals, art, plates, cups, and bowls!
-Gym is nothing special
-Pool is okay
MY APARTMENT:
-1bed/1bath (I do not live in the junior 1bd/1bth)
-unfurnished
-$1523 per month + ~$10 for gas + ~$80 for electricity
-free standard wifi comes with the apartment for free but you gotta call to set it up
-1 free parking spot
-on-site laundry near elevators on both sides of the building (uses an app to pay)
KITCHEN:
-good dishwasher
-huge sink
-good stove
-no microwave (must bring your own)
-lots of storage space
-lots of storage space
BATHROOM:
-lots of storage space
-high shower head
-heating fan
BEDROOM:
-floor to ceiling windows
-lots of sunlight throughout the day
-walk-in closet
-door to balcony

Your apartment looks so nice!!Thank you so much for doing this! I have a few follow up questions. What has been your experience with the laundry facilities? Do you know what the parking area is like? Is it uncovered? Last one lol Do you have any insights on the junior one bedrooms?

did you move here after living in weyburn the first year? i want to live in a 1 bed in venice barry next year but theyre saying i have to wait til october to do a room switch from weyburn and there might not be spots available 😩

Nice video! I'll be a visiting graduate student at UCLA next Feb (I'm an international PhD student from Brazil). Do you know any place that rent a double or triple room near UCLA campus? I believe I can pay from $700 to $800 for a triple room.

Hi Johnnie! By calling to set up the internet, do you mean calling UCLA or other private providers?

To set up the internet, you must call Spectrum and set it up on your own. UCLA can provide you the phone number to call spectrum but essentially you'll have to set it up as if you were living in your own private apartment. Same goes with gas and electricity--you must set up your own account with LA city gas and electric, which DOES NOT go through UCLA.

Hi! How do you feel about the commute to campus? I'm trying to figure out my preferences now and have heard people say the distance can be annoying (especially as a first year).

I enjoyed the commute to campus. The hourly bruin bus is super convenient as it picks you up right in front of the complex. I drove to campus sometimes to find free street parking and then walking 5-15 minutes to campus. If I couldn't find parking, I would just pay the daily rate ($14 i think?) and park and stay on campus the whole day. about 8-15 minute drive to campus depending on traffic.

Hey I am an incoming student for Fall 2023 and I have given unfurnished apartments as my preference for uni housing. But I’m confused as to how to furnish the apartment? Did you buy all of this on your own?

I bought a lot of stuff from Amazon, Ikea, and Target. I bought all the stuff on my own, and then sold most of it on my own as well. I gave a lot of stuff away for free to other residents upon moving out. I also got a lot of free stuff from other residents that left stuff in the lobby as they were moving out (and me moving in).

is the balcony shared?

The balcony is not always shared depending on your unit. Some units like the ones across from me in the courtyard had plants outside of their door which is their “balcony” space. This means that I generally am able to leave my slide door open without risking anyone entering whereas those other neighbors would typically close and lock their slide doors at night because it’s accessible by anyone in the apartment complex.

it was about $1400 plus electric and gas, so closer to $1500. I think they raised the rent so it's closer to $1600 now.
