Wow, amazing game by ND especially on the defensive end - sometimes it felt a little dirty, but games tend to get tough in such a rivalry. The perfect team to point out the big problem UCONN has, quite literally. ND being so much bigger in size exposing the weakness of only having Aaliyah as a strong big in the paint where she had to work with little help against 2-3 bigs from ND. Also this revealed that Caroline and Aubrey can help out as bigs vs. teams that isnt as strong as ND on the 4 and 5 but not versus a team that is competent in the paint which you can definitely say for teams like SC and Stanford. Great test for the team to see where they stand, although they can hardly work on except for hoping for players to recover. Ayanna did improve in this game a lot, again, and showed what of an important role she could play in the future of the team. Although ND made the game very difficult for UCONN defensively, also the huskies had a lot of bad luck missing even open shots most of the time which i think is due to the amazing crowed ND hosted - kind of shows what big advantage the home spot is for UCONN usually. And if Nika is your best scorer in the first half on this huskies team you kind of know there is a problem. UCONN imho still a top 4 team but this game shows again how prone to injuries the huskies is. It feels just not fair how many injuries this team has to take again and again but hey thats sports you got to deal with it. On a sidenote, i think Nika again did an tremendous job and was by far the best player on the huskies. True leader but there is only so much you can do.

Refs made it close in the 3rd quarter. Ebo’s offensive foul with Edwards arms wrapped around her a prime example of subjective reffing. I am a fan of the game not the $$$.

Damn. Notre Dame really called my girl Aubrey Griffin's bluff on her jumpshot today lol. And then she didn't get any of those fast break opportunities that she's known for making her a non factor today. But she'll bounce back.

the strategy to let aubrey and edwards shoot wide open deep 2-pointers was brilliant. force uconn's worse distance shooters to shoot low value shots over and over again. how uconn did nothing to adjust for that is confusing. azzi getting injured didnt help but even before that ND did a great job bottling her up. this was the perfect type of game for caroline to step up ir aaliyah to dominate the post, or nika to penetrate and kick, but unfortunately they did/could not. brutal loss. just brutal.

Most missed UCONN Q1 shots where short... their legs were not there for them this game... and it got worse as they played on. When Edwards was pushed in Q1 into Azzi's knee, removing the biggest UCONN scoring threat in the game for Notre Dame... it changed the game. Shots were off today... speed was missing... rough game for UCONN. I hope Azzi recovers quickly... UCONN has had more than it's fair share of player injuries in the past two years.

ND lost the last game and Miles played poorly. She was SUPER MOTIVATED to make amends and she certainly DID. The Irish had this game circled on the calendar. Kudos to them. But Geno already warned us - this team was NOT going to go undefeated thru this murderous opening schedule. All good - better to lose to ND NOW than in March. Dealing with adversity in an extremely hostile environment was new for this group and they didn't handle it well. NOW they know. Valuable lesson for the NEXT time this happens

I do think UConn as a whole needs to improve their overall strengthening because whatever they're doing isn't working. You can't blame other teams for being physical. Basketball is a physical sport and teams know that's a way to rattle UConn. Paige has been injured in every season that's she's played. She's to frail. So has Azzi. This is Nika's first year being healthy. And the team, as a whole, just can't take physicality. That's not Notre Dame's fault. UConn gets rattled too easily when things aren't going their way and lack the ability to bounce back and recover. The reality is Notre Dame did their job. They watched film. They scouted. They came out with a game plan and they stuck to it. They were the better team (I think they're the better team in general and picked them to win from the jump). Stop using Azzi's injury as an excuse. She wasn't affecting the game when she was playing so that's a moot point. She too one dimensional and she needs to be more than a scorer because the great teams will find a way to ice her. Exhibit A.

There’s a huge difference between aggressive play and dirty play. Notre Dame is just dirty. I’m sorry but I’d like to see them actually play clean and show out their talent because all I see is lack of skill and more so courtyard basketball. For Niele Ivey to allow her players to play like that is going to really degrade her program. UCONN didn’t play great but they did play clean, it was just finishing at the rim that they couldn’t do. It’s also early in the season so it was a good loss to have and learn from.
@chestermicek
@chestermicek Жыл бұрын
First of all, Notre Dame shot the lights out in the first half. 75% isn't going to happen very often. Next, Azzi suffered a hyperextended knee when Fats Ecbo shoved Edwards into Azzi just as she was flexing her knees for a jump shot. That's not going to happen very often. Worse, the refs ignored the many fouls ND was committing and even let Mabry rough up Caroline so much that she pushed Mabry, and then, Mabry acted like she'd been shoved by a forklift truck. Finally, nobody but LouLou could make a shot in the first half. Oh, sure Nika made a couple of threes, but she lost her nerve & shot a shortie & then a curve ball off the side of her hand. Meanwhile, Caroline is so out of shape that she actually missed the rim on a shot & she keeps hitting the back of the iron. She never does that. That concussion from last year & the shoulder injury from this year have hurt her. That's a perfect storm and UConn was the sword fish boat that sailed into it. We watched a duck fly backwards while eating a catfish.
@waldolydecker8118
@waldolydecker8118 Жыл бұрын
First of all, it wasn't "Fats Ecbo" who shoved Edwards into Azzi. If you watched the game, they showed you at 13:25 and told you who committed the foul. If you're going to toss name insults and talk a whole bunch of other gibberish shit, at least have sense enough to get your facts straight - otherwise you blow the only cover you might have to being a total moron.

Last year, Notre Dame wrecked Paige Buecker's season and this year they just wrecked Azzi's season. I warned that the response to the skills of players like Paige & Azzi would bring out the animal in players like Ecbo. Westbrook pouncing on Citron was payback for damaging Azzi's knee & the elbow Niki took to the jaw. My take is that the regs let the physicality of Notre Dame go way too far. If I were Geno, I'd demand that Notre Dame be removed from UConn's schedule.

Over and over ND was slapping, pushing, shoving and refs called nothing. Why is UConn shooting so terrible? It's partly because they're being rushed and banged up. I don't think I can say much more about this game. When the shooting percentage drops from high to very low it isn't skill, it's other factors.
