As an old person, I just want to reassure young people that it's natural to have some level of anxiety and depression with the chaos in the world and modern society. Social media and news media try to keep you angry, fearful and anxious. This was not the case when I was young. So, don't be too harsh on yourselves.

I just want to say to all the people who have social anxiety, I give you a huge hug. Because it's horrible to always hear the 'it's all in your head' or 'just stop being shy' or 'just go out more'. It truly is like a prison, but I promise you're not alone, you're not 'pathetic' and it's not your fault to be feeling this way. If you try your best, you'll get better, slowly but surely. /hugs/ ♥

After working with many clients over the years I still find that the best way to overcome anxiety is to develop a friendly and open relationship to your emotions - treat them as guests instead of enemies. This is a central theme in mindfulness therapy for anxiety and it works extremely well.

I joined ur site. Can you explain how I make friends with this feeling of wanting to harm and do aggressive things in the morning, every morning. PTSD combat Veteran with loud neighbors, but I deal with it. But my anxiety, fear, anger, stress is getting close to lethal. Can you help me? Im an older man.

@@thinktank8389 If its that bad and you arent taking medication then I think this should be tried. I have never known anyone addicted to antidepressants in over 25 years of working intimately with mood difficulties. sounds like you are doing well, however, considering the environment you are enduring. The environment is a REAL trigger. You wont be able to overcome it without it either stopping or getting some medication. The medication if and when it helps will give you an idea of how bad the trigger really is. You cannot expect to be able to control your mood by willpower. Its impossible. Those that say they can simply have not got the same issues. They are controlling nothing. They are just unafflicted. what I am saying is try to remember that your emotional intensity is absolutely understandable. You dont really want to hurt yourself or others but boy the feelings boil and things can get nasty. Then there can be shame and humiliation at loss of control. Again, I mention this to let you know it is well known and understood. Whatever and wherever you get angry know that its not your fault. You are activated by a deep feeling response-Trauma. So, if you havent find someone you can easily see and contact on a weekly basis if needed and begin to share (confess) what is happening and how you feel about it. This alone (if you can establish a relationship with a person who doesn't rile you-I suggest someone very with a personality you actually like) will begin to allow some of the fuel to go through your system and deplete the anger and shame and worry. I would recommend that actual PTSD therapy not be undertaken until you have a sense of enough control and enough time has passed in that state for you to feel comfy. The message there is that once you feel something helping stay with it. Be disciplined as you can in keeping that relationship and likewise any medication. you have to trust yourself to be your own physician at this point. That means both taking help thats offered and developing as much self understanding as you can about what helps short term, medium term and longer term. Dont rule anything out but at the same time dont overindulge in things for too long and always take a measured approach to all interventions. If you havent begin to see yourself as a normal and worthwhile person with a real and not your fault illness (just like the flu) . find a good book about a real veteran like yourself and feel their story. Find other veterans who are healing or on the path. It a multilayered approach each day. This is copied from a chap called Brian down below : It will go away. I promise. Mine did. You have to change your life style. It will be the hardest thing you ever do but it is possible. Drink a double dose of Chamomile Tea in the morning and night. Take 2 New Mood 5HTP in the morning and night from onnit.com (it is not addictive, it is natural. Go to the gym 3-5 times a week for 30 minutes a day. (Cardio works best) Meditate. Go to church / be spiritual / pray. Accept your anxiety attack and know that it will pass. Write your fears on paper, crunch them, and throw them away physically. Sleep well. Avoid stress. Eat very healthy leafy greens and vegetables. Eat many blueberries. Breathe in and out deeply and slowly. Do yoga. Go to skilled chiropractors to massage your stress away. Love your family and friends. Take the focus off of yourself, think about others, and pay deep focus onto others. Kiss and hug your friends, family, and significant other. Buy scented and relaxing incense and light them around your house. Masturbate. Eat delicious foods, but not unhealthy. Pick up a new hobby. Don't drink any caffeine. Keep yourself distracted on tasks. You can do this! I know many people who beat anxiety, it is not permanent it just takes discipline, faith, patience, and persistence! simple sense thats hard to do both mentally and physically but if you look at it it just about sums up a normal healthy lifestyle. This is what we are all aiming for.

Joe, you need a different Dr. Do you use the VA mental health medical facilities? I do. I finally got brave enough to ask for a different Psychologist, just couldn't click with the first one. And they were VERY understanding and I had another one right away. I say right away in the sense that I was done with the first one but it was a couple of months b4 the new Dr. had an appt opening. Omg, what a difference. If you Really want help getting better, a powerful step is to try a diff Dr. Preferably one that is newer to the VA medical system. They aren't burnt out with Veterans and their problems, bring fresh perspective AND newer training and studies in their bag of tricks, lol.

Think Tank move ASAP to a place with insulation newly built 2000 and up... it will help tremendously then you can really focus on healing. Not with all the nerve wracking noises

My own advise: Don't worry about something until there's something to worry about. Even then you shouldn't be anxious because whatever happens good or bad, it will happen - embrace your fears and don't try to get out of anything. The things that you are apprehensive about, that you fear, or that make you uncomfortable, embrace these things and turn them into something to love and look forward to. This works! I no longer fear anything and I feel so much healthier in mind and body; also loose the karma and forgive everyone that you feel has wronged you. If you fear death, not to worry either because you are and ethereal eternal being and you really cannot die in either case. The body dies but YOU are eternal..just like everything and everybody else.

What a truly tone deaf post. You act as if anxiety is something people can decide to have or not have. You act as if there is some logic to anxiety. If you actually knew ANYTHING at all about anxiety, you’d know that it is a completely illogical malfunction of the brain which can’t simply be turned off (without years of psychological training…which doesn’t work for everyone every time….which is why true panic attack sufferers ALWAYS have Xanax with them) as you seem to think. Your words ring hollow to me and are zero help to someone who actually lives with real anxiety.

I suffered from anxiety for years, and one day while I was at work I had an epiphany. It was during a period of deep study of meditation and cognitive therapy that I had this amazing breakthrough that pretty much cured my anxiety instantly. What was that epiphany? Simple: I had a secondhand ego. Now what do I mean by secondhand ego? Well let me try to explain in a bit more detail. When we are raised as children our parents and teachers install in us the belief that we should never put ourselves above others. Furthermore, the push to be popular, to be liked and respected creates a believe in our subconscious minds that what other people think of us dictates and defines who we are. This is what I call a secondhand ego, or to word it differently a second and self-esteem. It is a well-known fact that people with low self-esteem suffer from anxiety and panic attacks while confident people do not, and I knew that there had to be a lesson there. So what's the difference between somebody who is confident and somebody who is not? Why don't confident people have problems with anxiety and panic? The answer to those questions can be summed up very easily: confident people have an independent self esteem that functions completely apart from what other people are thinking. They define themselves on their own terms and don't give a damn what other people think of them. This altruistic based upbringing that we experience as children creates an intense need for approval. Rather than asking the question "Am I a good man?" someone with a second hand ego asks, "do people think I'm a good man?" and there is a fundamental difference between the two. The secret to dealing with social anxiety is developing a more independent sense of self, or to put it very bluntly: stop giving a fuck what people think. When you work on letting go of wanting approval people's words will simply pass right through you as if you're a ghost. You will hear them, but they will simply be noise and nothing else; the words will no longer have as much meaning and they won't elicit any emotional response in you. If you'd like to learn more about how to let go of wanting control, approval and security I highly recommend studying the Sedona Method; it can change your life. Now whenever I am out in public I'm always checking my mind to see how it's thinking, and how connected to others I am. When I'm walking through a crowded mall I bring my attention to my breath, and bring my focus also to my feet and just allow myself to just be me. I ask myself some questions such as: am I wanting to be popular right now? Do I care if the pretty women are looking at me? In this moment can I give myself permission to not care what others are thinking? These simple questions can be surprisingly powerful, you might even make up some of your own. Now that I work on releasing wanting approval on a daily basis I have noticed some wonderful improvements in my mental health. Apart from the obvious relaxation it creates I have also noticed that I no longer get nervous before job interviews, and I don't need people to understand me. If I make a decision that's very important to me and somebody disagrees with me, or suggest it's the wrong decision I no longer get angry or hurt, in fact I don't care at all. Other peoples opinions simply don't affect me anymore, and there is a wonderful peace and freedom to be found there. I have observed that anxiety seems to be caused by one particular thing: being overly concerned about what other people might do, say or think. Why are we so connected to what other people think of us? (Wanting approval). Why might we be so concerned about what people might do to us? (Wanting security/survival). And why might we be concerned about what people might say? (Again, wanting approval). Do yourself a favour and pick up a copy of the Sedona Method o as soon as possible. It's a wonderful beautiful book about a very simple and easy to apply technique to help with letting go of wanting approval and security among many many other things. Thoughts create stress, so in order to beat stress we have to change the way we think. It's not as hard as you might think.

Anxiety makes you question EVERYTHING, it makes you feel like you're going crazy. It makes it so hard to hold onto the most special things in your life, because you end up feeling scared to the point it's unbearable. I didn't realize how bad my anxiety was getting all year, until I looked back at my behavior and everything I've lost because of it. These videos, self help books, and meditation absolutely make a huge difference. Thank you so much for posting this.

However., I do still feel inclined to ask how you are currently doing in life with your anxiety - if it was gotten better or worse and than if so, than how so ? I watch this video probably 12 years ago and pined it to my Hemiplegic Migraine board on Pinterest. I’ve dealt with this illness since childhood, so it’s understandable how fear can rule your life when you suffer stroke like symptoms as a small child, especially when you witness your aunt, at a cousins shower, laughing one minute and dead the next due to a massive aneurysm. I have had panic attacks so severe my muscles turned to stone that I couldn’t breathe. This video, definitely helped me understand the mechanics of the brain and I learn how to reprogram my brains responds. I cannot express how beneficial this video was on regaining some of my life back and I’m so grateful and I’m still alive 12 years later. With the help of doctors who found the right combination of medication and this video I’m able to go outside by myself and at 65 I’ve regained some of my life. I ever so grateful to you and this video.

@@patriciaoreilly8907 your exactly right. We lived in a wooded area along side small river for 30+ years, very peaceful and surrounded by wildlife. We had feeders that everyday attracted various bird species, squirrels, opossum, raccoons, foxes, deer, great blue herons, and 3 bald Eagles. Even the encounters of healing their injuries and their daily visits brought great respect and inner peace to me more then they will ever know.

That's how I am too. I don't have the motivation and my anxiety level plants me in my bed sometimes for days. But....if you MAKE yourself go out and jog or walk amongst nature, it helps SO much. And you can run the anxiety out of yourself. Exercise combined with daily relaxation sessions will do wonders. It's helped me. Live well my friend :)

Strategies that helped YOU have little bearing upon what will help others. I know advice like this is well-intended, but to state that what helped you WILL help others is naive & dangerous. Far more wise to state “this helped ME” only. Promising others that what you did is the way for ALL is a good way to provoke someone into suicide. The reasons for the this should be obvious.

Having had anxiety since 2012 due to a traumatic event in the ER, anxiety has stuck with me ever since. My anxiety is all health related. So any symptom I feel like headache, heart palps, stomach ache, eye pain… literally ANYTHING, immediately I have anxiety then onto panic attacks then before I know it I’m in fight or flight mode. I’m seeing a therapist and finally finding things that are helping ease my anxious mind. Facing my anxiety and not fighting with it it has been a huge hugeeee help. I hope everyone here finds peace with this horrible mental illness. 🙏🏼

Sometimes it can be caused by lack of essential minerals such as magnesium, potassium,vit D3, calcium etc check out these on videos by other doctors on YT….you may be surprised by how related it is to lack of proper dietary needs…..good luck

Never suffered from it until I turned 75. Woke up and got up and all of a sudden my head went mad! I had to sit down and hold on tight. I was a zombie for a day and when finally I had some semblance of what I was I doing ( no idea how to drive after driving 60 years) vertigo, omg, I could hardly walk. After a year I am getting there but still not the same.

This was a great talk. Very calm, openminded man who brought elements of psychology, medicine, and neurology into his speech. As a future health care provider, this man is truly a remarkable medical doctor who is tremendously wise himself.

I think this is true for any learning. Since I have been studying physics I find that I am much less depressed. Depression is in a way a selfish disease, you are so deeply stuck inside your own head that you cannot function. Finding something to bring you out of yourself will bring you out of your depression.

I’m noticing how selfish it is of others to think along the lines of selfishness with regard to this particular condition when what is actually happening is one is punishing oneself over and over again in a cycle of low thinking about oneself that becomes habitual. Sparks of self-doubt burst into flames leading to self-destruction that can span a lifetime, unless it is cut short, by center-of-the-earth falling into panic. Sad to say, many - in a flash of self-torment for reasons long forgotten, if there even were any real reasons, don’t make it out of that depth of hopelessness and hell in ones own mind. Far from able to being selfish.

Yes, learning a new language really helps. I've been doing it for years, and I can see how much it has helped me to feel better. It's not only that it has kept me occupied, it made me to go out and meet people who are now good friends. In addition, each time I'm able to communicate in that language, I feel pride and that definitely boosts my self-esteem.

Wish there were more wonderful doctors like this out there, Marty Rossman's voice is so calming, and if listened to early on I think it could help so many people before worry gets worse. He's so non judgemental and helpful. In the UK there is still a bit of a stigma unfortunately.

Anxiety is a paradigm. It is designed by repetitive negative outcomes. This causes your subconscious to write bad programming, to the point that ultimately it can cause such dis-ease that it can kill you! I've suffered my whole life from growing up around lound sounds, ie: air base/ airport, adrenaline seeking from being in competitive sports ie: motocross. And then BAD relationships. I found that learning to accept t the issues takes there power away ultimately take away the anxiety!

I suffer from crippling anxiety although very intelligent, I still couldn't help myself. I always reached for a deeper meaning and reason. Thank you so much for sharing this video.

What made this presentation meaningful to me was Dr Rossman's overall soothing tone of voice. This is not just an academic topic to him. He is a practitioner of mindfulness himself. I felt I was floating on the waters off Hawaii with him. Very nice flow to his talk with just the right amount of information and reflection. The way he read the Serenity Prayer was prescient.

I got blessed with hearing Dr. Rossman on PBS and appreciate his calm peaceful style and soothing manner of delivery. Thanks. I also learned "The Serenity Prayer" by Reinhold Niebuhr, at the beginning stages of my salvation and alcoholism-recovery years ago, and pray that to God; as well as the Lord's Prayer and that helps me (as well as others), throughout various seasons, time periods, across various geographic landscapes, and varying scenarios. Awesome presentation and a great comfort to we anxiety disorder/depression sufferers. Stuff I found that helps: having a light on while you sleep, burning candles, ginger root extract capsules, taking a shower. Herbal tea, especially chamomile. Having a blanket to wrap yourself up in if you're so nervous that you feel cold and are chattering. Having sound on--radio or even static television for some "white noise" in the background. Lastly, Valerian Root. Stinky, but you WILL calm down and sleep!

It will go away. I promise. Mine did. You have to change your life style. It will be the hardest thing you ever do but it is possible. Drink a double dose of Chamomile Tea in the morning and night. Take 2 New Mood 5HTP in the morning and night from onnit.com (it is not addictive, it is natural. Go to the gym 3-5 times a week for 30 minutes a day. (Cardio works best) Meditate. Go to church / be spiritual / pray. Accept your anxiety attack and know that it will pass. Write your fears on paper, crunch them, and throw them away physically. Sleep well. Avoid stress. Eat very healthy leafy greens and vegetables. Eat many blueberries. Breathe in and out deeply and slowly. Do yoga. Go to skilled chiropractors to massage your stress away. Love your family and friends. Take the focus off of yourself, think about others, and pay deep focus onto others. Kiss and hug your friends, family, and significant other. Buy scented and relaxing incense and light them around your house. Masturbate. Eat delicious foods, but not unhealthy. Pick up a new hobby. Don't drink any caffeine. Keep yourself distracted on tasks. You can do this! I know many people who beat anxiety, it is not permanent it just takes discipline, faith, patience, and persistence!

*Tried these the other day when I was just so angry at the world, and after about 30 minutes I was so relaxed and calm that I even forgot that I was even angry. They work great and are something that I will definitely be keeping around with me because they work. Yes I agree. I've never been materialistic. You can't put a price on spirituality. Just as God is omnipotent so is love. To covet is to become bitter and resentful. The less we have the more we appreciate. This is what scripture means when we read; "The meek shall inherit the Earth." PEACE.

T Ladd, In life there are only 2 problems --mind and the body. To feel better reduce negative thoughts. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives good relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations. When taking a walk, at office, in college, when reading, before sleep etc observe your breath sensations. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes--Counsellor.

Sebastiaan, The permanent cure to anxiety is the free Vipaasna meditation practiced all around the world. Meditation reprogrames the mind. Sit on a comfortable chair, hands on your laps, close your eyes, be still and focus on the breath entering and leaving your nostrils for 10 minutes early morning and night. Slowly increase the practice to 20 minutes. Plenty of thoughts will come but they will reduce after doing the above meditation daily. Don't give up. Watch "Vipaasna meditation videos" on you tube.

There are so many people today experiencing anxiety and panic disorders, you've just got to hang in there. I used to suffer from the absolute worst, chronic panic attacks. I have had anxiety ever since I was 16 then as I got older my anxiety triggers always changed and it's gotten worse as I have gotten older. I hide it quite well and many of my friends wouldn't even know if I hadn't told them. I'm at the point where I need help professionally . The problem is people who experience GAD/panic disorder try to overcome their condition through sheer willpower, the conscious mind. Little do they know that the root cause of their symptoms is underlying deep in their subconscious and is manifesting as feelings. Those feelings are things that need attention. The term we only use 10% of our mind is true, and it's time anxiety sufferers learned how to begin using the other 90% of their mind towards a solution. Let's go..

utter rubbish. There is no such thing you can point to as an unconscious process impacting on the mood or physical condition of a body. This is misleading. All our symptoms of mood can be noticed as cause and condition. By using the truism about Willpower you also muddle the water. This is not willpower. no one said anything about willpower-whatever that may be. This is about recognising cause and effect and working intelligently with the causes to amend our negative responses. This is the only way out of the trap called unconscious processing. The feeling part is exactly the same as the other parts. There is not separation between the reactions of the body-mind. Working on any part is working gradually and holistically. It does no one any good to be ignorant about the way to work with problems of anxiety or depression. Anxiety. GAD/ depression , etc are all manifest in feeling based and conscious based process. If it werent then you would have absolutely no way to contact them as all experience is made up of feeling and thinking and can be easily identified. Processing or healing or solving is very much a chosen and conscious process too.

you havent understood a thing I have said, I can only assume you have not looked at your self organisation at all. If you can show me the unconscious then it be definition is not unconscious. There are only behaviours and feelings and thoughts that are acted out. The only way to work with this is via understanding and acceptance or knowledge. for example: the chap who started this thread says " little do those GAD and depressives no but they are acting out subconscious process" The mix up is that neither will power not subconscious process need attention. Only the cause and effect which is easy to see. E.G I find I am nervous and upset in my car. cause=driving the car. Solution=apply conditions that diminish the behaviour or the reaction. This may be a process of gradual exposure which becomes a simple habituating process. If this is intolerant to the person then working on conditions of route, timing, company, and added appraisals of whatever thoughts may be generated. Absolutely nothing subconscious or unconscious needed. Things may FEEL complicated but they are actually very simple. It is not that one can change everything according to what you exactly want. So, back to the unconscious-no such thing. The states of waking, sleeping and dreaming are the 3 referred to as common states. In between these are various states of degrees like revelry or hypnotic states, again of varying degrees. In deep sleep there is no thought process at all. In dreaming there are images, thoughts and feelings of varying degrees. In waking there is the same varying degree of thinking, imagining and dreaming. Therefore anything referred to as unconscious cannot be found and if you say I found it then you are confusing a waking state with a deep sleep and / or unconscious state. Jung and Freud may have referred to such phenomena and the whole new age approach even goes in for totally made up beliefs that when examined are based on absolutely nothing but idle fantasy in the same way a fiction writer may create an absorbing story. This is not to say that Jungian therapy is always unhelpful. It is not. For the record this talk by Mr Rossman is very good indeed. The unconscious however is nothing more than the inability to notice what your body-mind is doing.

Correct! When we speak of the unconscious state, we are speaking of the mind not being aware of what is going on as if asleep. As far as the subconscious mind is concerned, it does the bidding of the universal mind or natural physical processes such as breathing and the heart pumping. The conscious mind termed, "The watchman at the gate" is responsible to suggestions and thoughts that will cause the subconscious mind to react, for example responding to triggers that could cause panic attacks or deep embedded fears that causes uncontrolled anxiety.

To really heal anxiety you must embrace it fully with consciousness and compassion. When you can embrace your anxiety with mindfulness it will change and it will heal. Your worst enemies are avoidance and aversion.

avoidance and aversion sums it up. I have come to a place that it is painful to think about confronting my fears and painful to avoid them. I am taking actions and whatever happens has to be better than staying in that painful state. I have to let go of the fear of being shamed. @@minidocstv3339 If you welcome the panic to come on full force...and really want it to come, it dissolves. Fear is what drives it...that's it's fuel. When you want it to come, and you have to really want it, you cut off its fuel.

It is difficult to deal with stress and anxiety especially if caused by things outside of your control but sharing with close friends your anxieties can help a great deal for most people. Learning not to worry about things that you have little or no control can also help.

Wow this talk is an absolute blessing. I normally sleep sound but tomorrow I turn 33 and am in a relatively new relationship, I want kids soon and also start back at school in two days. I Feel stressed but wow this talk what a game changer!!!! It's so on everything I need right now even down to the fact my boyfriend wasn't able to emotionally support me even though he tried his best✨🌹💓. I can't wait to read that book the Female brain. Thanks so so so much!

When I go to the dentist, I put on good music, close my eyes, and go to the beach in my mind. It really helps with anxiety.

+Judy Frankel Makes sense. My mind is crazy racing all the time. I just relax myself all over, then tell myself, "It's okay. You don't have to deal with this if you can't right now. Nobody or nothing needs you, so you don't have to handle this now." Somehow, that calms me right down. Maybe that can help someone.

That technique at the end.. it got me almost in a trance. Completely calmed me down. The hard part was to keep on breathing into my belly and block all the negative thoughts. Once you cope with that.. you really are in that safe place and ready to tackle whatever you need to face. Thanks for this.

I imagine I'm on a beautiful calm beach when I'm in the dentist chair, now I realise I can do this imagining any place when anxious. I'd never been to that beach, I made it up it up, but it gives me a deep sense of calm.

This is a fantastic talk! I'm currently fascinated & wanting to learn as much as I can about neuroplasticity & biofeedback because I have an eating disorder & I'm seeing this type of treatment being used for eating disorders & it's showing really positive outcomes.
