As an ex aircraft mech and who is I volved in aircraft restoration this really pulled myheartstrings. Some of those aircraft are savable and indeed some are classics. That Vtail Bonanza and some of the Cessnas too. There are old Learjets, BAe125s, Jetstreams, Swerlingens and an F27 that would make great museum pieces.

The best bone yard that I ever went through was in Jeddah Saudi Arabia. When the Saudi's were done with a plane they would just take them to the back of the airport and park them in the dirt. They had been doing this since the 1940's, so there were some really great planes out there. There was a whole row of Avro Lancaster bombers, complete with the Merlin engines, as well as a pile of DeHaviland Vampires. They just took a crane and literally made a pile of them, one on top of another. Would love to list all the airplane types, but there were just too many. But here are a few. Beech-18, Rockwell trainer, Chipmunk, DC-3, DC-8, and the list goes on. This was at the old downtown airport, which has been closed now for over 30 years, so they are all gone now.

A friend owns an older Falcon jet which he is selling. I am astounded at what the costs are for FAA required overhauls, a new interior, insurance, avionics serviced/upgraded, and of course, storage fees. Just one engine overall can cost close to $100k. All of these costs add up and are paid out before the damned thing ever gets off the ground. Then there's cost of fuel, the pilot, landing fees, and etc.

I don't understand that one with the turbine in the fuselage?
@ribotero7 жыл бұрын
Tomasina Covell it's called an APU(auxiliary power unit), basically a turbine powered generator.
@mr.elliott73166 жыл бұрын
If the one you are talking about is 3:13 into the video, that airplane is a Lockheed JetStar, a 10 passenger 4 engine corporate jet and that unit is called the APU (auxiliary power unit). It was used on the ground to supply air for air conditioning or heating the airplane while on the ground, it also turned a generator that supplied electric power to the airplane so you did not use up the batteries. The engines were electrically started off of the batteries and the generator would recharge the batteries in addition to the engine generators. The APU was shut down before takeoff because it was not certified for inflight use. JetStars did not come from the Lockheed factory with an APU installed or for that matter they did not have any interior or paint, all they had was a green primer and a bare interior shell, these were installed by after market companies called completion centers who the purchaser contracted with separately from the aircraft purchase. Jut to clarify, and APU is not a jet engine, but a gas turbine engine, a jet engine would have a tail cone on the rear of the engine to produce the thrust from the engine. I spent 10 years working on the Lockheed JetStar as a chief of maintenance for a corporate operator and that particular unit looks like a Solar unit, the other APU available for the JetStar was made by Airesearch. Once I got my pilot licenses I also logged over 600 hours in the airplane, the best airplane I ever worked on.

There is such an amazing amount of Jetstream prop commuter aircraft, based on a fairly old Hawker Siddeley design. One of the peculiarities of these aircraft is that the flaps were actually not only on the trailing edge of the wings but also under the aircraft's belly.

+Joe Brown Must be a lucrative business especially selling the engines.
@taylorperkins898 жыл бұрын
Definitely. Sadly in many cases these birds will make more money as spares than as a complete aircraft.
@Subgunman7 жыл бұрын
There is a very lucrative business in used avionics. Before these aircraft even reach this lot they are stripped of all instruments of value at a location where a licensed A&P mechanic can remove and tag the parts with all pertinent data as to where they came from. These parts in turn will be sold to avionics suppliers who will refurbish and re certify the parts. The FAA requires an unbroken paper trail from removal to refurbishment listing exactly what was done to the instrument ( used for investigations in the future if it is installed ink another aircraft that would be involved in an accident ). This paper trail and liability insurance are what run up the cost of used TSO'ed parts. The owner more than likely bought most of these aircraft,minus critical instruments and engines, to sell for spare parts. Now that last airframe in the video had some nice seats that still appeared to be salvageable with good leather, lets hope the elements won't get to them before some individual can rescue them from this lot.
