It also ensures everyone plays 6 games over the period, that often didnt happen when FAs had to organise friendlies. The Nations League is an improvement on what came before.

Basically there is 4 leagues each with 16 teams except league d which has 7(6 now Russia got banned) the leagues are split into 4 groups of 4. Top team gets promoted and bottom gets relegated(slightly different for league d which only has two groups) the winners of all the league a groups then advance to the nations league finals where they play semi finals, final and third place.
