Yoel def had that machismo mentality of protecting his ego by not going all out, especially after the first Whittaker fight (that is the time he pressed the action and lost). But he was also old, I think his gas tank was severely limited. And it was also conducive to his style of eschewing winning rounds to gamble on the KO. I mean he went orthodox (as a natural southpaw) for basically the whole fight in order to land that big shot on Rob in the fifth. He also relied heavily on his athleticism and so never closed certain gaps in his game, though his boxing was quite underrated. I guess what I am saying is that there were a lot of reasons that he never quite got the belt though I agree the main reason was the mentality. I will also say this: I think he was scared of Izzy as much as Izzy was scared of him. It was like Ngannou-Lewis. At that stage Izzy was seen as a wizard and he had gone on a legendary run capped off by making Yoel’s great rival in Whittaker look like a chump. He didn’t want to end up on his KO list and he did not have the cage cutting skills to stop him from running away. So there were even more factors conspiring against him in that particular fight. His career is low key a tragedy bc if he had managed to get his mentality right maybe he could have even become a champ at 46 against Nemkov. He did not have the wherewithal and gas to contend with him on the feet but it looked like Nemkov could not defend his takedowns when he actually went for them. He might have also been KTFO but it’s hugely disappointing for someone that talented and inspiring to ultimately not dare to win

I’m french and I must say i’m glad you touched on the Gane subject, at the time he was around he was getting so much hype in the country, getting interviews by a lot of local mainstreams media and playing the good guy card, but the reality is he’s got one of the worst mindset for mma and like you said he never really wanted it, he simply wants the easiest and safest way to the title, I remember at the time he fought Jones I put 400€ on him just because I would’ve had at least the money consolation if a guy like him won. This plus the fact that his main coach is an absolute clown thank god he never became champ.

Yoel won that fight with Whitaker, for the record..He was old when he made it to the UFC, at 32 yo, and by the time he made it to the top 5, he was passing his prime..He won in the olympics several times, he wasn't afraid of trying, that's absurd..Izzy is hard to track down, for a monster like Yoel..
