UFC Welterweight Champion Georges "Rush" St-Pierre is one of the most recognizable faces in the UFC and is currently ranked the 3rd pound for pound best fighter. GSP recently came to Phuket, Thailand and continued his training with Master Yod at Tiger Muay Thai. Kru Yod is one of the two Tiger trainers that have repeatedly traveled to Canada, helping prepare him for his fights against Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz.

the thing I love about him is almost no martial artist is this open minded to try multiple styles against world class opponents. When have you seen Damian Maia training with Thai stadium champions? Or McGregor against Olympic wrestlers? Too many pros have an "I'm an expert at this" mentality when mma can never be mastered! That's the beauty of it

even in the fight against condit you could see the different movement of gsp. zhis was the first time, he worked out with the thais, and he was much more light on hin feet. so yeah, he did use muay thai before. muay thai is not just about the spectacular knees and elbows, ect. in his case he adapted the thai-style movement very well and it helped him a lot in standup (if he needs to fight there^^)

Hope no one takes this offensively but you can tell GSP's super disciplined because you can imagine how much he works on his technique on his own to make it as perfect as he can, since he's not as naturally talented as others. Before you all try and kill me just know GSP always says he's not the most talented fighter in MMA in any one aspect and jokes trying to unlock the "secret" behind what makes natural phenoms like Jose Aldo and A. Silva tick. His words. He works harder than most!

Don't worry about him. Facts are much easier to digest. GSP was hit on/behind the ear by Serra. This upsets the fluid in the inner ear which controls balance and is one of the most underestimated strikes in combat. GSP recalled 'wanting to get him' after it, without first regaining the status quo. In the exchange he was clipped properly and Serra was close enough to keep hitting him. Once you pass the 'wanting to get him' gut reaction.. it is a point of no return. Even the hugest chins fail.
@SUNSPYtm
@SUNSPYtm 10 жыл бұрын
The best example I can use is Brian Stann recently knocked out by Wanderlei. He is/was known for having a 'granite' chin and who was expecting him to get knocked out how he did ? I mean this in a nice way, but he got reckless and he got clean KO'd like I never thought I'd see. It wasn't his chin that failed it was his readiness to react to the punch.. non existent. You can't commit to a strike and then change your momentum to switch to defending. Balance and momentum/impetus are everything.

The majority of his training (in terms of athletic training, not technical) consists of gymnastics and track and field. Both sports build explosive strength. Also keep in mind, GSP didn't wrestle Kos, he decided to point strike him and avoid the wrestling. Hendrix dominated (I use that word loosely) Kos in the grappling, working on offense or defense constantly, and controlled a majority of every round Condit landed 1 kick and almost KO'd GSP, Diaz got held down and GSP still looked beat up, he doesn't have the chin to take punishment. He HAS to avoid punishment, hence his style. Once a guy figures a way to give and take with GSP, he becomes mediocre

He fights the way he does for a reason, he knows he can't absorb punishment, and he knows he can't take strikes like some other fighters can, because all it takes with him is 1 good shot, its MMA, these guys are trained to a level where they could KO anyone if they're not properly defending, its a rare exception for guys like Rampage who just don't go to sleep, and/or have rare genetics, bone structure, ect that allows them to take big shots. He survives by avoiding strikes, why argue?

For a while I was thinking Hendricks would be a tough test, but after seeing some of his fights again I'm starting to think his only chance is a flash KO. He is so much like Kos in terms of his skill set but I would argue that Kos was a bigger challenge to GSP in terms of matching his speed and athleticism while Hendricks could be a bigger test in terms of strength. Still though I think GSP is a little better at everything. I think Hendricks knows it too, especially after Condit.

Don't get me wrong I do keep up with Buakaw and i'm a big fan of his. I just feel the size and experience advantage for George would be too great. Not only would his wrestling and top game overwhelm Buakaw he's a black belt in karate with striking being his primary background. I'd personally if anything like to see buakaw fight at lightweight or even featherweight. Him and aldo would be a great fight.

Then you have middle grounds like frankie edgar, doesn't have the greatest chin in the world, he's a small dude, most the fighters in UFC at any weight could KO him, but he's got amazing cardio, and amazing heart, as well as technique & footwork which allows him to recover. GSP is somewhere around there, but if someone like Hendricks lands a bomb on his chin, he's going to sleep, where someone like Diaz could eat them all fight. Height/reach also play a big role and illustrate natural size.

Some like GSP have glass jaws to begin with, or like Diaz have granite chins to begin with, its partially genetics, upbringing, mentality, ability to absorb including technique like relaxing and moving with the strike instead of resisting/tensing which will get you KO'd. Machida seems solid, and Couture is a beast but he's been old, and the older you get the easier you get KO'd just based on brain and cardiovascular conditioning. Yes everyone can be KOd but some people have glass jaws some don't

Just to clarify on some of the comments i'm seeing on here. Yes GSP's standup isn't as good as a pure world class thai boxer's. Thai boxing is the only sport these guys can make money in locally, considering the fact that mixed martial arts is an illegal sport in thailand. These guys have short and brutal careers, being exposed to the sport as early as 5 and fighting professionally at 12 or 13. Respect the difference's.

Its the hardest fight for GSP by far. He has a guy who can and probably will KO him in round 1, and has possibly as good or better wrestling. I think GSP is the better fighter on paper, but paper doesn't show his glass jaw, or the fact that he throws nothing but peppering, point scoring strikes, and Hendrix will be looking to take his head off. If GSP can control early, and wear Hendrix down, take away his KO power, and make it a wrestling/karate style match, he has a good chance, but not easy.

(4) You never know what is going to happen, you never now at what percent a fighter is going to realize, exceed, or fail to meet expectations, and potential, and mental states, injuries, overall state of being day of the fight all factors in, I'm not saying GSP will lose 100%, who knows. What I am saying is if you bet on GSP every fight because no one can beat him, like with Jones vs Gustaffson, or Silva vs Weidman, its not the best fight to convince yourself their opponent(s) have no chance.
