Yeah, and even framework doesn't allow you to upgrade the CPU by itself. I have an old upgradable ThinkPad, and that's what I'm using. The only bad thing about it is that the GPU is not upgradable, and the GPU that came with it is pretty weak and only has 128MB of VRAM.

You could do with one of the power bricks with multiple tips. Just for powering laptops in the shop. You will want a 130w or more. As some of the higher end (for the time) gear will not turn on using a common 65w brick.

Oh what the hell... You managed to get the same exact laptop I had back in the day (Inspiron 3521), mine had an i3-3217U instead though. I ended up stripping out all of the parts, mainly to upgrade another laptop from 4 GB to 8 GB, which I also was planning on upgrading to a 2nd gen i7, but then I got my hands on a more powerful laptop later on. And now I just daily drive workstation tier laptops lol

That old Precision is awesome, the CPU actually is true quad core compared to most laptops at the time which were mostly 2 core 4 thrad. That fingerprint sensor is also still functional for Windows 10 and 11,it could also have another 2 ram slots under the keyboard. With a minimum of 8GB ram and an SSD it's still a great laptop for Windows 10 or 11,way better than those other 2 consumer grade junk laptops

I got an old Dell latitude one time from 2006. It had powered on but kept cutting off, just had a bad power conector and it worked for a while, I think it had bad caps because it had stability issues, then it just kept freezing to the point it was unusable. But for as beat up as it was it was a wonder it even worked.

I have installed Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 Ameliorated on that generation of old laptops. I upgrade and give or return them to friends who can't afford a new one. Here is South Africa we squeeze a lot of use out of old PCs and appliances if they can still be used productively.

I'm still using a 1st gen i3 15.6 HP, use to be a living room media center PC, but now it's still in use as browsing/Office. I think I even updated to a low power i7/i5. First thing I'd test would be the RAM swap, then test each slot, and the old "keep the power button for 30 seconds with no energy/battery plugged". Hell, that last one saved me a trip last week, still don't know why but that has saved me more time than I can count and some people say I'm a wizard for that

@@hybrid1880 the extra mm here and there shaving that goes on each year is all for marketing numbers. Which has taken away changable CPUs and give rise to soldered RAM and even storage. It has especially hit business class machines. Which are only slightly better than the comsumer rubbish for upgradeability. Most still have a single bottom cover to remove to do anything. Clipped on with many tiny, easily breakable hooks. I have had to have several laptop bottoms repaced due to broken hooks after taking the bottom off once. This is using the recommended technique. Businnes class gear has full teardown docs for taking them apart.

It was touted as a working person's laptop and if memory serves there was an advertisement with a cup of coffee spilled on it and it still worked because it was an investment in your future. My boss spilled many a cup on his and those lines led the drink away from vital areas.

Instead of throwing it away, try putting it up for sale. There are a lot of people looking for even a keyboard casing or even a screen. Many people are also looking for boards connected beyond the motherboard. It's a shame to throw away even the cooling system when it's whole. Every now and then I see someone even putting up damaged laptops for parts.

I got this exact laptop from my dad’s work for free and i used it for some time before I had a decent laptop and it had quite some power to it. I could play Minecraft on it and screen record with obs and still get 100fps. I out a ssd in it and it ran great with windows 10. The old gpu was the worst part of it since drivers were ancient and it didn’t support directx 11 fully. It is a quad core i7 with hyper threading and it is so beefy that it needs a higher power 130w charger or else it will throttle the cpu and it won’t go above like 1.1 ghz or something like that. So charging and using at the same time wasn’t great since all I had was the regular dell 90w charger. It definitely puts out quite a bit of heat. I also have a similar older dell that looks similar and has a top end core 2 duo and 4gb ram. Even it is somewhat useable with a ssd on windows 10, though you are limited by thr ram as they didn’t really make any larger ddr2 sticks. Sadly it died recently for some random reason. It just lights up power led when I plug it in and if I press the power button it spins up loud for a few seconds then shuts off and doesn’t display anything or give any error lights or beeps.

Start some bins and save it. You want a copper bin, aluminum bin and a wire bin. Some wires have aluminum cores, so don't mix them up. When a bin gets full sell it for scrap. You could hang onto the boards and other stuff for gold scrap too, but meh. I just trash that stuff. Oh and do a bin for the hard drives too. They add up, but don't sell them for scrap. Throw them up on ebay as parts and just stuff them in a flat rate box.

Also as far as the dell precision goes it very well could have had a bad ram module I would test that ram just to make sure it still works. if it doesn't then chances are that old laptop might still work it goes without saying they are truly the last of their kind.

Ok, correction on my part. You did say at the end of the video you would take them to recycling. Leaving my original comment so I'm being transparent and can admit my mistakes. I get the old laptops you can't or don't want to do anything with but can you please not just throw electronics in the trash. I'm no tree hugging hippy but been in IT for 28 years now and throughout my years I have repaired laptops because someone gave them to a recycling center or parted them out on ebay. The screens alone, as long as the work, can save someone from buying a new laptop they don't want to spend money on just because their screen was damaged or died. The hinges for the screens. Motherboards. Even the plastics can be of use to someone else that may not have the money to replace a perfectly good working laptop that needs a replacement cover plate. You don't have to sell them on ebay if you don't want to, just donate them to a place that will. You are welcome to part them out and make a buck but just don't send them to a landfill where they take forever to decay and help nobody.
