Laura is the first architect on this show who really thought about budget and still managed to give them a showstopper. The flooring is just breathtaking and the way she treated the front bricks and windows? I wish they would have her on again.

I always wonder about the statement of costs made on these kinds of programs. They seem to be a lot lower than the costs in my area. The staining of the bricks alone would probably have cost three times as much here. And this show claimed installing the large glass bi-fold doors only cost 3,500 pounds ($4,300), which is just a little more than the cost of putting clay tile on my front porch.

@@timward3116 Yes, I wish they would be more clear on actual costs. This video mentions the architect's services aren't included in the budget, but were the other workers' labor included in the cost & was it the same price someone would actually pay? They mentioned the builders working long days, so did they get paid overtime & was that included in the figures? I don't know why these shows state the cost of the project, but often aren't clear about what is included. I also wonder about the durability of the cheaper materials. If it's just a matter of taste & people placing value on finer materials that's one thing, but if the countertops & flooring will need to be replaced sooner, it would be nice to know about the trade-offs. Otherwise, I love how they made a fancy parquet floor out of inexpensive materials.
@timward3116

@@miriamrobarts I agree with you, Miriam. Labor is the bulk of any cost, and labor cost would seem to be what they always leave out. We see that even in things like plumbing and electrical - yet shows like this have no problem with knocking down walls and moving pipes and outlets. And a lot of times, the "improvements" are just a matter of taste, anyway and destroy half the charm of older buildings (my opinion, of course, but that's the point). My mother's home was the perfect example of how long cheaper materials can last (and how nice they can look) when you take care of them. She grew up in the Great Depression and a constant them of my childhood was, "You break it, and you won't get another one." We grew up being required to clean up after ourselves, not touch the walls, etc. My family had excellent taste but little money for "quality" items - yet when it came to counters, flooring, cabinets, etc., everything always looked new. The "finer" things, however, can be extremely fussy to maintain. Give me good Formica any day.

To everyone commenting on the volume being too loud etc. This channel most likely doesn't own the rights to re-post this show on YT and in order for it not to be taken down for copyright issues, they adjust the volume so it doesn't get picked up by the AI. The variations in voices due to the volume being increased here and there, doesn't match the original show exactly, so it makes it sound like a "different' show. Yes, it can be a bit annoying but I appreciate these channels posting shows I would not normally get a chance to watch.

The bricks are still yellow. I would have just rendered & painted it with a light grey or cream color & leave the corner red bricks as accents to frame it. The interior is impressive. I love the skylight most especially. I’m just not sure about the revolving wall. It’s certainly a unique feature. But I don’t think it makes a huge difference if you close the kitchen or not.

Painting the bricks would have meant adding maintenance issues for decades. Paint needs redoing every 3-5 years and it can crack, allowing moisture into the bricks and mortar. That can lead to the great expense of tuck pointing or even replacing bricks as they fail. This was cost effective and durable.

I love the result and the fact that it didn't go massively over budget. The front elevation is improved, but the top half with its blank expanse still overbalances the lower half. I feel sorry for Max having to live in a small windowless room while his parents get a massive en suite. There was no mention of whether the garden office is meant to be a permanent solution. Finally, I see the benefit of the folding door for spatial flexibility, but the rotating door seems more a feature than a function.

My parents' had birch plywood put in in 72, and only had to redo the walls to put in a new faucet. So if they used non yellowing epoxy over that, it will be good forever! Now the varnish on the cabinets had to be redone after about 40 years, but just the doors. Hopefully that answers your question...

The intro showed that the family was def. Not tidy. Not easy with several kids in the home but you could tell a lot about the housekeeping standard. Also, the finished home had some new furniture which, of course, helped the consistent look. The snug had an old patterned sofa which really jumped out. You can’t afford to completely start with all new decor so a reality check about how your existing furniture will look in a new, different style of rooms should be part of the plan/budget.

The exterior of this house has been massively improved. I don't think the yellow brick has been improved, but because everything else has changed, you don't even notice it! Bravo on that design. And to anyone with an 1980's kitchen, save those oak cabinets! Put them in your garage or laundry room, or even as part of a walk in closet. They are solid oak and will last a lifetime. - footnote: she did that whole exterior for 5,000 pounds??? That deserves an award. Not joking.

Love the design but think the rotating kitchen wall is inappropriate!... Kitchens were never meant to be private spaces, more like communal spaces..Get rid of that damn wall!

Unless the bricks started yellow, in time you could have them sand blasted for yet another beautifying treatment. It's probably costly, so the front only. Power wash drive now and then or give it a nice coating for concrete. House looking very nice. Clean skylight window with the season changes. Just a suggestion.

They're doing it again....the music is drowning out the narration. Very nice transformation!

I think this renovation is absolutely brilliant and, of course, all credit goes to the incredible architect, her team and her ideas. Beautiful. However, this is a full on renovation with new kitchen, skylights, new doors exterior and interior, built in structures, new windows, new bathroom, new garage door, new lawn..plus a completed exterior structure, the office... I find it extremely unlikely that it was completed for 62k pounds. This is closer to a 200-300K Reno. Maybe the labour ( aside from the acknowledged architects’ fees) was donated?

Bravo. I had my doubts about that swinging door, but it came out terrific.

Why is the narrator's volume so low than the background music? I was adjusting the volume back and forth.

I was happy they put more money in the house. The wedding is only one day but the house is for a life time to feel comfortable in. Just have a smaller intimate wedding and be extremely happy in your newly renovated home....no complaints from me lol.

The exterior was honestly a downgrade. Yes, the windows could have been changed, but the asymmetry in the new design is just nerve wrecking. A clear sign of unnecessarily disorderly design. And the small roof of the front door was very aesthetic, it just needed a good wash.
