Great video. One thing I wanted to note was on the link aggregation--this does not increase the physical link speed; you can't increase the physical limitations of a network adapter by grouping it into a single logical link. Instead, link aggregation allows for higher throughput, which still increases the perceived "speed" to the user, but it will not grant a "20Gb" interface. You're maintaining the 10Gb link speed across both adapters but have two pathways to input the data to the NAS (bandwidth increases, not speed).

Thank you for this great Video, but let me ask one question. In the Video you describe that you use 2 NVMEs for the read and write cache. The size of the NVMEs you use are 1TB but you selected for the cache a size of just 600GB. Now my question is, can you use the 400GB as a Volume for Virtual Machines and or Docker ? This would be an great option for me.

Thank you for the informative videos! Getting so excited to receive mine next month! Regarding the Network Bridging feature, please correct me if I'm wrong. This means you can plug your 10G-ready computer into one 10G port on NAS, then the other port is connected to a 10G port on your 10G switch, and your 10G-ready computer would then be connected to your network at 10G speed? It's effectively connecting THRU the NAS to the rest of the network?

Both of these videos have been so helpful in setting up my NAS. Most recently I've come back to this video to setup my SSD's and I am curious about one thing. Now when I dump media (I'm a filmmaker and manage a lot of media, also new to NAS) I am noticing that the files are greyed out. Not all but many tend to be greyed out. I can still access to media from the finder or within Premiere. I assumed this meant that the files are being stored on one of the SSD's giving me faster speed but would eventually move on to the spinning drives. Is that how that is supposed to work? Also, I imagine the SSD will fill up relatively quickly if this is the case. Then what? How do I remove media from the SSD but keep the same system in place? For instance is it possible to set the SSD to move the oldest media off of the SSD and on to the main drives once it is full, making room for new media?
@forestchaput
@forestchaput 5 ай бұрын
Hmmm. I'm not sure about that one. I don't think it would be related to the files being temporarily stored on the SSD as I don't think the NAS would report that information back to MacOS. It could just be the NAS not keeping up with how fast Finder is asking for thing. Are you connected with a wired connection, or wireless? The SSDs will run themselves and will only really be used when copying large amounts of data and the spinning drives are unable to keep up. I would just sit back, relax, and use your NAS like normal, knowing that the SSD cache is doing its job.
@kyleromanek
@kyleromanek 5 ай бұрын
@@forestchaput Yeah, it's odd to me that they are still greyed out. Maybe a hard reset will help. I have to dump more footage later today so that will be an additional test I guess. Based on the storage data on the SSD, I can tell that the media I added the other day is on there, I just want to be sure that it is making it's way to the spinning disk storage and not just sitting on the SSD. Thanks again.

I just cleared one entirely and am wondering if there's any feasible way to have the UGREEN software (VM maybe?) Question for you @ Rocky Mountain School of Photography. When accessing files remotely, do you have to download the file to work on it then upload back onto the NAS? Or can you simply open the file, and work on it, and quick save as you're working, as if the NAS is an extension of your desktop? Question about backing up your NAS to another NAS offsite. Can I use a different NAS other than UGREEN? Is it difficult to sync if it's not another UGREEN? Also, If I decide to use another UGREEN NAS, does it have to be the same size as the main one? I just order the 6-Bay UGREEN. Could I get the 4-BAY as the backup as long as the hard drive space on the 4-BAY is equal or greater to my main 6-Bay? Your videos on this NAS system are supper informative! Thanks in advance!
@forestchaput
@forestchaput 8 ай бұрын
That depends. If you setup a VPN, you can VPN into your home network and access the NAS as if you were sitting at home. If you don't want to go that route, you can just use the Ugreen web browser which yes, would require you to download, edit, then re-upload to the NAS. As of right now, the Ugreen can only back up to another Ugreen. I imagine they are working on support for other brands though. Mixing bay numbers is completely fine so long as there is enough capacity on the target NAS.

Quick question, all this completely new to me but loving all of the process and learning curve of it all. I originally set up my DXP480T Plus very low I know now (4 pieces 1TB WD red on RAID 5) been using them for about 2 weeks now and obviously after dumping all of my clients files work, personal movie and music collection and setting up me and my wife's phones camera roll to upload into the NAS, it is getting very low in space. My question to you, Can I swap out 2 of the originally installed 1TB and replace them with 2 new 4TB having in 2pcs 4TB and 2pcs 1TB running in without trouble? Or the best bet would be to jump into 4 new 4TB and find a new usage for the 4pcs 1TB. BTW, my apologies for the looong explanation. Thnx in advance.
@forestchaput
@forestchaput 4 ай бұрын
You can swap drives, but you need to do it one at a time, allowing the system to rebuild the RAID array after each drive. It's time consuming and I don't really recommend it. Also, if one of the drives dies during the rebuild, you lose all of your data so ensure you have everything backed up properly.

I've got a question concerning the remote access. How about multi user management. E.g. I want friends of mine to be able to use (their part of) the storage remotely. Does this work? In your explanation as far as I understood, you have to log in with the admins email and password (not admin user on the Nas but the email and PW you've set up the remote access). This would somehow mean that only one account is accessable from remote, right?

Already found an answer in which you said the others will access via the same link but with their own credentials. So how do they setup their credentials? Are those the credentials you set up when you setup new "local" users? So you need to add an email address here? An explanation would be great! Just read that ugreen will add 2FA support in Q1 of next year. Very much looking forward to it.

They would even have their own desktop on the NAS with their own (smaller) selection of preferences.

I see, thanks for the answer!! I also wonder, what kind of security protocols they're using ... Couldn't find any docs about this online. Thinking about setting up a VPN insteadt since a small single person user ist less likely to be the target of a hacking attack and VPN is more established in the security game than ugreen :p Also talked to a friend of mine. He said seeing up vpn is not thaaaat much of a hustle.
