@@ulrichlehnhardt4293 Joan was great. I like Bette too, but in this movie, as far as I'm concerned, she can go screw. Sorry for the atrocious language (I know this will get me some trolling comments) but she'd done the same performance before in other films. She especially didn't deserve any award for how she treated Joan Crawford during the filming of this movie, and on other occasions. It wasn't a one woman show and she knew it. Joan, in fact, suggested adapting the book What Ever Happened To Baby Jane with her and Davis in the lead roles, and she personally recommended Bette for the leading role. What Bette did in response was claim that she did all the work, act all surprised when Crawford "campaigned against her", then hold a grudge for several years over an Oscar that she didn’t, in my opinion, deserve. She was bitter towards someone who she should have been a smidge grateful to, especially since when this film is discussed people mention how great Bette is and s*** on Crawford.

Actually, Crawford made more money from the picture. In the initiating deal, Crawford took 10 percent of the gross. Davis went for more cash up front and only 5 percent of the gross, at which point nobody was guessing near so optimistically what a bonanza the film would prove to be.

They've removed a word at :54 when Jane is telling Blanche, "now you have to depend on me for your "......." food again. I'm presuming that Jane either said "damn food," or "goddamn food" and they removed it like they did in a scene in the kitchen where Jane yells out to Blanche, calling her a "bitch." In both of these instances, you can see Bette's mouth moving, but the sound has been turned down. The word "bitch" and "damn" or especially "Goddamn" had a lot more potency back in 1962...

Trey No, that’s not correct. Bette was too much of a professional to have forgotten her lines. She had a trait whereby she would leave a gap between some words, which gave her delivery a more natural flow. In the scene in the kitchen, Jane says “You miserable..” She does then say (mouthed by Bette) “bitch” but it’s drowned out by the buzzer so is not heard.
@fool4singing
@fool4singing 4 жыл бұрын
@@elspethcoogan1499 Right,..you can see Bette's bottom teeth when she forms the word "Goddamn," so you know it had originally been there, and then muted. Also, even though the buzzer is heard over the word "bitch," you can tell it has been muted as well. Like I said above, I think they thought those two words were too severe,..even for Jane!

@@elspethcoogan1499 That is so true. Jane a damaged child, in this case one who was used by her parents (particularly the father) to make money. Jane has become a "monster" because of what happened to her as a child, and Bette Davis keeps this in mind in every scene, even when the character of Jane is at her most sadistic and aggressive (and drunk!). It's of course no coincidence that her name is "Baby" Jane - she is a broken child trapped in an adult's body. There are a couple of scenes where the adult Baby Jane lets the defensive guard against the pain down, for instance when she is looking at her old photographs in a scrapbook and says "I always like this photograph, it's so sad", but it's the beach scene that is the most poignant of all, when Blanche reveals to Jane that she caused the accident and Jane comments "You mean after all this time, we could have been friends". Just before she delivers that line, Bette Davis slowly turns her head with her hands near her mouth, shot from below...it is really beautifully done and very subtle. Of course, none of this denies the fact that there are some very funny one-liners in the film....but the film is much deeper and darker, and much more nuanced, than the "camp horror classic" it is usually labelled these days.

They are two celluloid "monsters" here in Spain when someone is a monster it´s because he or she is a supernatural being), although I'm more of a Bette Davies fan, I think it's great, she lived for many years, with her unique voice, hoarse from tobacco smoke. One of his last appearances was on a trip he made here to Spain. There was no one like her, she survived Hollywood, a place that can destroy you if you are not a powerful being, and she was. Unfortunately, frank and transparent people, who show their feelings, are often seen as unfriendly, arrogant, and even insane. Already the concealed ones get everything they want. They manipulate, defame, persecute, gossip, betray, induce others to make mistakes and even crimes. In my opinion, this is the theme of "What Happened to Baby Jane?", Released in 1962 in the United States and in 1964 in Brazil, directed by Robert Aldrich. The backstage of this low-budget gothic horror film about sisters Jane Hudson (Bette Davis) and Blanche Hudson (Joan Crawford) have been rewritten in the miniseries "Feud" (2017) in which Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon revive Crawford and Davis , the stars of the 1960s film. In "Feud," Crawford is portrayed as a financially shattered, aging, decadent actress who tries to get around with the filming of "What Happened to Baby Jane?" The idea of following the same line of "psychotic" by Alfred Hitchcock, a commercial and critical megassuccess launched two years earlier in 1960, was successful, and marked the career of the two veteran actresses at the time. According to "Feud," it would have departed from Crawford's suggestion, to call the rival, Davis, to make the protagonist or antagonist, depends on the angle chosen by the viewer. Blanche (Crawford) is the sister physically fragile, having suffered an accident that left her paraplegic. Davis already plays the histrionic Jane. To give life to the character, she chose to wear loaded makeup, wig and old-fashioned dresses. It looks like an old-fashioned doll from the beginning of the last century, but wrinkled and grotesque. Both the pathetic look and the exaggerated, surreal interpretation remind the audience of Davis' memorable characters such as Mildred Rogers of "Of Human Bondage" (1934) and Regina Giddens of "The Little Foxes" (1941) . It's hilarious to see the actress drag her slippers around the house, imitate Crawford's voice on the phone, curse, make fun of her own wickedness, as if she owns the situation. Between the lines, the story shows the existential emptiness of an old lady, lonely, drunk, dominated by guilt, who tries to react, but only manages to distribute hammering, kicking, embarrassing, frightening and disgusting the public. Lukas Heller's screenplay, based on Henry Farrell's eponymous novel, is resourceful and offers more than a horror film, made only to scare. It shows that anyone, when manipulated and betrayed, can lose track and reason, and see no other way out, except to go back to being a child and go to the beach, to have an ice cream.

I love love love this movie. Bette Davis was brilliant. My only problem is why did not Blanche simply scream out the window to that “nosy Mrs. Bates”and tell her what was going on. She had the opportunity. But then again, that would have made no movie. LOL

Blanche should have checked to see, I mean in my opinion I'm not really sure Jane could have done any worse than putting a rat or a dead bird under the lid... well a live rat maybe, but in that case she'd hear the rat anyway.

I KNOW it's just a movie, and I understand why some lines are "funny", but do you people realize there actually ARE older people treated just like this? Elder abuse is terrible, and often inflicted by their own brother(s) or sister(s). :-(

Is Baby Jane eating a chicken leg at 01:54? It looks like a beef rib, pork chop, or lamb chop. Can any meat lovers identify?
