Congratulations Brandon on a really tough hike. Altitude sickness kicked my ass last week. I came to Wyoming from southeast Kansas to see the Tetons. Just day hiking a few miles was awful. Took three days to recover.

Maybe something to consider when climbing a high elevation is to bring a pulse oximeter . Get a couple of base readings - first at home and a second reading at the trail head, then intermittently check during the hike to help determine whether your system is being stressed .
@mountainwanderer4 ай бұрын
We actually had one with us. I didn't get any base readings since it was not mine, but my numbers looked good on trail.

It's best to take the North Trail past Helen and Lightning Lakes once you reach Rock Creek Basin. There is much less burn area and less deadfall to deal with. It adds a few miles, but you also don't lose the elevation that you have to climb back out of. You will make faster progress on the North Trail.

Wow this 3 part adventure made me pretty anxious following you as you were sick! I can’t imagine how you got through that. My husband got sick at the top of the High Divide loop in Olympic Nat’l Park. But his was only 12 miles out after getting sick and that alone was a loooooong day getting him through it. Man what a monster challenge for you. And then the whole outfitter drop snafu … well it’s a story of grit for sure. Glad you made it out and I’m sorry you got sick! Was it flu or some virus? Not altitude sickness? Hope you recovered fine!

We definitely had our struggles! I feel like I can safely say that I had altitude sickness. I think that the hike out to the trailhead might've been tougher for me than the highline was!

@@mountainwanderer I took a Tenkara Rod and caught at Lambert, Jack & Jill, Ouray, and Caroline. I fished Kidney and Deadhorse but didn’t land anything at those lakes. Part of why I want to go back next summer and do it again is to fish more of the lakes on the trail. Weather busted some of that for us last time, and one day we pushed Yellowstone to Lambert, so that took fishing time off the itinerary. Really since now doing three thru hikes, Uinta Highline, Ruby Crest, and Teton Crest, the Highline has the most fishing opportunities and largest fish I’ve caught on a thru hike. It truly is a special place.
@mountainwanderer4 ай бұрын
Erik slayed them at Kidney Lakes, caught way more than are showed in the video. Brandon packed his fishing rod on the whole trail and only broke it out once! 😂

Whew! What an extraordinary and physically taxing adventure. Thank you to Eric who stayed with Travis. Josh did his best to keep company with Brandon and sorry he and Trav got sick. Altitude or Flu? Big congrats to Brandon who persevered alone to the end. What a great group of friends you all are. Now that all the good things are said - I know Brandon mentioned taking electrolytes - I hope the rest of you are, too. And, well, it seems like most of you are carrying awfully heavy packs....every considered some lighter gear?
@mountainwanderer4 ай бұрын

As if it was ever gonna be a thing for me, this ol' fart flatlander from the southeast won't be adding this trek to my bucket list. But thanks immensely for showing me some scenes from the Uintas I've only experienced from a distance, from a car along Utah 150 years ago. Hat's off for pushing through the challenge. Might be a stretch but this adventure reminds me a bit about Lewis and Clark went through. Love the closing scene, and I'd bet there were burgers somewhere nearby. This one was for the books for y'all!

Nice End to the Uintas trilogy. 4 Different people each with a very different ending. Brandon should feel a huge sense of accomplisment..no one failed...it was all a learning experience...and most importantly, one hell and adventure. I cant imagine had u continued Travis and u werent able to re supply just how screwed u would have been. Sometimes the right thing to do is the hardest. Good storytelling guys.

I definitely failed. The goal was to come out at Hayden Pass and I didn't make it. "Goal hikes" are not something that I have done before, and I'm not sure how I feel about. But it was definitely a fail. No reason to call it anything else. It was an adventure for sure!
