Hi you all. We used to call “Eggy Bread” egg steaklets in S Wales and have them with tomato ketchup. It amazed me on my first trip to the US to have strawberries and maple syrup! I also didn’t realize that US French Toast had sugar, but I’m not surprised.

Eggy bread is something I often associate with camping to have with a fried breakfast. Also good with say baked beans on. It is a good way of making your eggs go further when you're a bit short of them.

I have tried both, I love both too. I went to visit family in Dallas last year and the Texans are masters of the BBQ. The meat is unreal smoked like you guys do. I usually make french toast with eggs, half n half, & vanilla. Usually topped with butter & cinnamon sugar. Then add the maple syrup or whipped cream with fruit.

For eggy bread. Just eggs, salt, bread. Always white as its denser, dipped, fried then served with a drizzle of brown sauce :p Also our bread isnt sweet which us why you can eat this savoury. If you can a sweet version you do French toast

They are both versions of "pain perdu" (pronounced pan per-DEW), which means "lost bread" in French and was developed there in order to not waste stale, left-over bread. It was brought over to America by early French settlers.

Eggy bread with baked beans over is 🤤🤤🤤🤤

You need to try egg with a hat on too - cut a circle out of the middle of the bread, fry the bread (both bits), and then crack an egg into the hole and fry it - one side of the bread will go egg with the nice yellow yolk in the hole. The final trick is to turn it over and slightly cook the top of the egg but not enough for the yolk not to be runny. Serve it on a plate and put the fried circle of bread on top of the yolk like a hat with some ketchup. This was a family staple in our house. It probably has other names in the UK too and strangely you can see it being cooked in the movie V for Vendetta.

I’ve always called it french toast, I like mine savoury with either brown sauce or tomato ketchup even peanut butter lol .... while my daughter loves me to make it with cinnamon and she adds maple syrup, 😋

hi guys hope your well. yes we do both here in uk . french toast with fruit and syrup or jam. eggy bread with bacon. have u tried fried bread with bacon? use that thick wonder bread cut in triangles and deep fry for min or so. nice with bacon n eggs lol andy

Great comparison, I’ve not had eggy bread in years ! Maybe decades!!!!, miss living at home, my mum makes an amazing “Fry Up”. I don’t know what you did wrong because I never used to make it lol 😂 . Both looked amazing .

,, you did the UK eggy bread completely right,, if you don't add the milk it just don't go far enough ands the wrong consistency,, real nice with cold cut slices that are a bit pokey,, something you like but don't have a lot like garlic sausage or salami,,, and ketchup 😏

What a creative What's Cooking Wednesday. Whose idea was that? Cool! I do remember people taking about the difference during your LIVES. Good to see you try it in real life. So each one had their own good things? I could see ours being more sweet. We do love things sweet here in the USA. It does seem to me that we like everything sweet. So I can see that with the French Toast as well. Looked like this was a fun one to do. Good to see the whole family involved as well. Seemed like everyone liked it. Hope your week is going well. Wouldn't say you did anything wrong but I tend to beat the eggs into a froth and cook it in a very hot oiled pan for eggy bread bit like frying an egg less than 1 min a side. I also us much thinner bread 2 eggs frothed like that poured onto a dinner plate should easily do 4 slices of bread. The way you cooked it made sense for the bread you used.

Your french toast is really like What we call "pain perdu" (lost bread, we call it like that because we use old bread, 1 or 2 days old to do it) in France And Belgium. We just don't put Vanilla on it... and rarely cinnamon. We spread sugar on the top when It is cooked^^

We used to have french toast every Sunday mornings in Australia, we called it french toast in the family, though i can't remember what my mum put in it i was too busy waiting to eat it ^_^ and yes bacon with french toast is best

I can't say I'm a fan of eggy bread (too eggy for me haha)! But I'll definitely have to give french toast a try after watching this! Can't wait for the day when you guys can visit the UK and enjoy our food on home turf!

In UK we also add cheese, so basically its the same mixture Jon had but a cheese sandwich dipped in and fried Forgot to say dont think ive ever seen bread that thick in uk supermarkets before! Wow!

A couple of other ways to try are, using French Brioche bread, which is a white bread enriched with melted butter when baking, or try using a fruit loaf which has dried fruit such as raisins, sultanas currents and mixed citrus peel running through the dough.

Oh yes! You can get all sorts of fancy with your french toast breads! Brioche is common as well as challah bread, cinnamon raisin bread is also amazing!

In Australia we always had “Eggy bread” with cinnamon sugar sprinkled on top which I guess is almost a hybrid of the two.

I never bothered trying eggy bread, but I always assumed that they were the same thing. I won't eat either of them now, but given the choice, I would go French. I found it so bizarre when I saw Madi spinkle icing sugar on her toast and then she topped it of with bacon!

When my cousins were little my Gran would put sprinkles in the eggy bread mix which would make me cringe. I love eggy bread with bacon and either ketchup or maple syrup. Eggy bread can easily be turned into a version of savoury bread and butter pudding. I would never add cinnamon to either version.

The older the bread the longer you need to soak it. Eggy bread, just eggs no milk. Also add some grated onion and grated cheddar to the mic.
