Nice job Mark, just seen this video. I used to work for a company that carried out service calls for Nuaire and other manufacturers. We used to be called out to mainly service, but sometimes if there was an issue we would inspect it to see whether it was an installation error or a fault with the unit when in warranty. Nuaire would replace if necessary, but you would be surprised how many install errors we would see😂😂. Nice to see you have fixed the outlet to wood above the ceiling as opposed to fixing to the larves, we always cringe when we see these types of old ceilings - you manage to cut the hole well 👌

@@electrician247 HI Mark. Great vid many thanks. I'm thinking of fitting one of these but how do you screw the inlet securely to a plasterboard ceiling? I guess you put a hardboard specer ro something on the loft side hole and screw into that, but how is that fixed in place? Ta!
@scotthenry3401
@scotthenry3401 Жыл бұрын
With a hardboard, or ply or whatever on the loft side would form a clamp squashing the plasterboard between the outlet and the hardboard, you could use a sealant like a flexible caulk if you wanted . That will be more than sufficient to hold fast under any normal operating stress which is miniscule.

When the filters are discoloured and dark they aren't doing their job so its best to change them regularly as per manufacturers recommendations

Around the 17:00 mark it looks like the suspension chord might be in contact with the horizontal roof timber. Could that not be a potential chaff risk leading to the unit falling on to the ceiling? Am presently considering one of these for my own house so am keen to learn as much as I can before I take the plunge. Not shown but I presume there must be some sort of cage inside the filters to stop them collapsing.

Hi mate, cord is hanging freely but it's strong stuff. You can get the mount kit and fit on timber base if you wish. Just make sure to get the rubber boots which reduce noise/vibration. The filters have a steel hoop in the ends of them. Very sturdy once into position. Thanks for watching!

@electrician247
@electrician247 Жыл бұрын
Hi David. You need to see if the soffits are vented for example, if you have roof vents allowing airflow and air bricks. Basically a good flow/circulation of air within the loft. Also that your loft hatch is well sealed and any spot lights etc. We want airflow but not from within the house if that makes sense. Otherwise that moist air will simply be blown back into the property. Most loft spaces are naturally well ventilated. It's more an issue if any partial loft conversion has taken place or extensive insulation that has removed that airflow. Hope that helps. Mark

Hi there Many thanks for taking the time to make the video and it has cleared some questions for me, great stuff. I'm looking into getting one of these. I live in a grade 2 thatched cottage. Not sure if there's vents but there most certainly is a draught from somewhere as the cobwebs are moving about. There is also a previous owner installed extractor vent from the kitchen to the loft (gets used very rarely and I'm assuming Nuair say don't use if the case as I'm assuming it would re-introduce smells/moisture into the house if both on). Probably due to laziness not bothering with heritage planning permission to vent to outside. If I got the wall control I could switch PIV off whist extractor vent being used and an amount of time after for now. Would you advise getting one of these and I can afford the heated one incase with the details I've mentioned? Are the heated ones very expensive to run? My loft feels warm a lot. Many thanks
@electrician247
@electrician247 Жыл бұрын
Hi Martyn, thanks for the kind comment. Firstly I would get the extractor correctly vented. It will be causing unseen damage to timbers and the thatch. Even if the PIV isn't running when the extractor is it will still raise the humidity in the loft for a prolonged period. I wouldn't advise running it this way. 100% heated versions are better but worth checking in terms of the thatched roof and risk of fire. I would perhaps consider enclosing the vent plate in fire board perhaps. One for an installer to carefully consider based on site conditions! Thanks.
@electrician247
@electrician247 Жыл бұрын
PS they are not expensive to run. The heating element pulses on and off to reduce energy consumption. It doesn't produce hot air. More takes the chill off by raising the loft air temp by a max of 8-12C (it's adjustable)

I have fitted quiet a few of these, some hanging up and some on a joists. The only problem is fitted the ducting ! its a tight fit. I fit mine before taking the unit into the loft. The anti vibration kit unit isn't really require just fit some rubber grommets under the timber before screwing down. Also some lofts cannot take the unit due to poor ventilation within the loft. No. If its installed in a space with a gas appliance or other CO generating appliance then you should install a CO detector that links to the system. This is to prevent injecting CO into other parts of the building. That's the limit of it on this product.

@@electrician247 in the one I installed today stated it needs to be linked to a relay switch which cuts it off if the smoke detector sounds, I'm assuming it's a new thing but you can see why as if there was a fire you would be pumping air around the building which would help accelerate the fire.

How long you had it on? Do you have bathroom/kitchen extractors? Undercut any tight fitting doors? Trickle vents to windows? Insulated roof? Loft sealed from the house properly aka hatch and spot lights? Has good ventilation to outside in the loft? They do work so something isnt quite right and can be solved! Unless you have an active leak or damp entering the property from somewhere? Sometimes they can take several weeks for the effect to be noticed if the building is especially damp. Hope that helps.

@@electrician247 thanks for getting back. It’s been on for 6 days, I took the defuser off and placed a humidity meter directly underneath it for about 10min and it was reading 70ish so I’m guessing my loft isn’t breathing properly. It’s all insulated, I did this just before summer. My loft hatch isn’t sealed, it just pushes up and i remove it. We don’t have any window vents but we leave them on a latch. Bathroom has an inline fan with timer for 30min. Kitchen has no fan and this is/was my next job. Thanks again 👍🏻

The science with piv doesnt stack up. Replacing warm humid air with cold clean air means higher heating bills. What if the air outside is more humid than inside? This system relies on the air in the attic being warmer but the whole point of loft insulation is to prevent heat going to the attic? Too many questions. This is the next cavity wall insulation problem.
@electrician247
@electrician247 Жыл бұрын
That's not true. Generally the loft has less humidity as its effectively outside if the survey is done correctly and it's suitably ventilated. The air temperature isn't that important with the heated models. Of course it will consume more energy to warm the air a little but not a huge expense to cure the destructive damage of mould and condensation. The heating is difficult to get your head around but our bills dropped. Humid air requires more energy to heat it. So as the humidity drops due to the injection of fresh air thus the heating has to work less hard to raise the temperature. This is not new technology. Its well established and proven. It does not bridge wall cavities and allow ingress like cavity wall insulation. That's a silly comparison to make. Hope the info helps.
