Yes,Hadrian was forced to build a wall as protection from being battered by the Scots with their golf clubs! 😂 They tried again later and got as far as the Antoine Wall (Glasgow to Edinburgh) and eventually they gave up and retreated! Probably the start of the collapse of the Roman Empire! Another great Vid folks!

Hadrian's Wall was probably more a show of power than to keep people out. It was hugely dominant on the landscape. Another wall was built later called the Antonine Wall which was across the centre of what is now Scotland but they abandoned that and moved back to Hadrian's Wall. You're totally right about taking the stones for other buildings too. Coming from Northumberland (north of rhe wall so I'm a heathen 😉) we did most of our school trips there. ☺️

Yeah i think this is as North as they got, well actually there is another wall a bit further North but it didn't really work out. This region is scattered with all sorts of roman sights. Ah yeah the Welsh Gold is very sort after, princess Diana had a Clogau gold ring. Glad you found it interesting 😎👍

Great drone shots , Hadrians wall wasn’t a border between Scotland and England . It was built to keep the Picts out but they beat the Romans a few times . You both should be getting paid by the UK tourist board ,doing a great job exploring and showing the country off. Really enjoying the trips ,keep safe 👌

Actually when the romans invaded Scotland at that time was known as Caledonia & was made up of different tribes it wasn’t only the picks .

Just up the road from my home, just for info most of the wall has been pinched to use for walls and farmhouses. The straight road is the Military Road but it was built a lot later in the Jacobean Wars, to take guns from Newcastle to defend Carlisle in a siege. The depression next to the wall is a Vallum, basically a moat. It’s a lovely area and my wife has just completed the Hadrian Wall route from Newcastle to the Solway Firth. PS. The Sill is a museum and the brewery is very good it looks out towards Sycamore Gap where the tree used to be…sorry to be a know it all but I’m a local🤣

It may be spelt Keswick but it's pronounced KEZZIK" (!) It's not pronounced "Kezwick". The Wall IS impressive with its regular mile castles, forts etc and Housesteads, Chesters and Corbridge in particular are worth a visit. Part of the wall follows the Whin Sill - so there is a steep escarpment with the Wall built at the top overlooking the land below on its northern side. It would have been impossible to get over THAT part of the Wall. Probably used more not to mark the "border" but as a wall with gates so you could control who comes in and out (and tax them if they want to bring goods in to sell them at a market on the other side!). Of course England and Scotland did not exist when the Wall was built in 122AD. The Venerable Bede described it as being about 12 feet highin his day (he, the "Father of British History", was writing about 600 years after the Wall was built). It is about 8 feet wide but both height and width probably changed at different points along its length according to local needs and the local geography. It is a World Heritage Site. It might be amusing but the story is that England's football captain, Bryan Robson (who comes from the North East of England and would know Hadrian's Wall) was on a tour with the national side to China. A trip to see the Great Wall of China had been arranged. He declined to go saying "If you've seen one wall (Hadrian's) you've seen them all..." Of course the best known sections of the wall in China, which we see in pubicity photgraphs etc are much more recently built - in the MIng Dynasty 1368-1644AD.

There was no Scotland at the time. It was around 100 AD, way before the Scots. Hadrian, the Roman Emperor, wanted to separate the Roman Empire from the barbarians.
