This video is part of the video series ‘Undergraduate to Professional’ and in the first episode I engaged in a fruitful discussion with a postgraduate student from the University of Bristol, UK. Here I asked him about his undergraduate experience, internship experience, industry experience and finally what was his journey to one of the Top 10 universities in the UK like. He has studied his undergraduate studies in Civil Engineering at the CINEC Campus in Sri Lanka and currently pursuing his Masters in Business Analytics.

Just curious ayye, Do Sri Lankan Unis offer credit-bearing internships? Here they do constitute 9-18 Units

@@ravindunethmina5037 in local universities Internship is a must and therefore, credits should be calculated. But I’m not aware about their credit system. Normally in the UK if you are following a sandwich program where you get to work in the industry for a year, credits are allocated.

It’s not the engineering degree, it is the engineering council of that particular country which signs the accord. So if the particular degree is accredited by the engineering council or any relevant accreditation bodies of that particular country, it should be okay. Answer to your question: if you have done your degree from a engineering council recognized university, you dont have to worry about Washington accord.

අයියෙ... මට Maths stream එකෙන් A/L වලට CSS results තිබුනෙ . මට Open University එකෙන් Civil Engineering කරන්න හිතෙනවා. ඒත් අයියෙ CCS Results එක නැති නිසා මට IESL ( Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka ) Certificate එක හම්බවෙන්නෙ නෑ. ඒක ගැටුලුවක් වෙනවද job එකක් කරන්න යද්දි ? Open University එකේ Civil Engineering degree එක අවුරුදු 2ක් ලංකාවේ කරලා අන්තිම අවුරුදු 2 ඕස්ට්‍රේලියාවෙ RMIT university එකෙන් සම්පූර්ණ කරන්න පුලුවන්. මගෙ Results එක CSS නිසා RMIT එකට යන්න බැරි වෙයිද මට IESL certificate එක නැති නිසා... ?? අයියගෙන් උත්තරයක් බලාපොරොත්තු වෙනවා අයියෙ...❤

If your plan is to migrate by completing your degree in RMIT, your AL results will not be a problem. But if you want to become a charted engineer (specially, in civil engineering) you need IESL membership.

All the best with your higher studies. Also look into SLIIT because they now offer a pathway in civil engineering where you could complete your final years at the University of Edinburgh which is one of the top universities in the UK.

Top up degree එක කරලත් මේ වගේම ඉස්සරහට යන්න පුලුවන්. කරන්න ඕන දේවල් ටිකක් තියෙනවා: 1) final year project එකට හොද topic එක්ක select කරගන්න (Next 5-10 years වලටත් valid වෙන එකක්) 2) final year project එකෙන් research abstract, extended abstract, poster, research paper or journal paper එකක් කොහොම හරි දාන්න 3) CV එක update කරන්න 4) Related field එකක industry experience ගන්න තව දේවල් තියෙනවා…

It doesn’t matter. If you are a year 1 student, you have plenty of time to engage in extra curricular activities at Uni. You can even decide to creat a new society or a team! For example, You can join the Rotaract club, create a toastmasters club, an engineers without borders program, initiate a student chapter of IMechE, participate in other engineering competitions, etc.

If you are planning to migrate, it is recommended to follow an affiliated program. That means a CS degree offered by a foreign recognized university.

@@dewvv Coventry University ranked joint first amongst Modern Universities in England for career prospects. So It will be up to your commitment. If you can get a first class and do a good final year project (including a conference/journal paper). this degree will grant you a path to UK masters for sure.

UK universities වල bachelor of engineering degree එක 3 years (BEng). UK 4 year undergraduate degree එකක් කරන්න බලනවනං MEng degree එකක් කරන්න වෙනවා. Master of Engineering කිව්වට ඒක 4 year undergraduate degree එකක් (Because, MEng will be your first degree and you haven’t graduated before). You will only receive BEng at the end of 3 years or MEng at the end of 4 years of your undergraduate program. තව option එකක් තියෙනව BEng Sandwich degree program එක. මේකත් 4 years (3 year study + 1 year industry). ගොඩක් UK ඉන්න ළමයි මේ option එක තමයි select කරන්නෙ. But this option is not available in Sri Lanka. I hope this clarifies your question.

Summer internships are designed for summer vacations in the relevant countries. Undergraduate internship is the mandatory internship of 6 months or 1 year, usually after 2nd or 3rd year depending on your program.

Business statistics is a good area. But now the trend is towards business analytics which I'm sure you can adjust fairly quickly. Best option is to follow a Masters in Analytics. There are plenty of opportunities for analytics in the UK.
