Actually the word "her" here is not really meant to be a pronoun but the English phonetic pronunciation of the korean word 허/heo which means weakness or a vunerable spot like a tender spot in Korean. So when they say "I call you her/heo cause you're my tear", you can also hear it as "I call you my weakness, cause you're my tear (as in torn or as in tears). The word play in this song is insane and the connections with their previous and future songs is even more mind-boggling I'll try and see if I can take my time to break it down in the reply to this comment but just thought I'd Point that out to you.

to better understand outro her and outro tear you need to listen to their love yourself trilogy and understand its concept ly: her is an album about falling in love, love that feels like a destiny ly: tear is an album about heartbreak, realising that you lost yourself in a relationship trying to be someone you're not for the other person ly: answer is an album about learning again how to love yourself of course it's a very simplistic explanation of the trilogy concept but it's important that outro:her is the last song on the ly:her album (the lyrics show where the next album is going, they show the first cracks in the relationship) outro:tear is the last song on the ly:tear album and it's an explosive culmination of all the hurt and pain they felt (but the song has a double meaning because it was also written at the time when the boys were contemplating disbanding so it's very painful song for them and for armys)

To understand BTS songs, it's best to start at the beginning because each album tells a story in a series. 3 albums of school life, 3 albums of youth, 3 albums in love yourself series, etc. Even their solo albums should be listen to in order you get more out of the album the way it was meant to be listened to.

As with many BTS songs, this one can be interpreted in different ways. Suga said this song reflected how he felt at the time, putting on his best mask for ARMY, while behind the scenes they were feeling overwhelmed by their skyrocketing success. This song (and album "Love Yourself: Her") was released in September 2017, and their struggles culminated in early 2018. "Outro: Tear" (and album "Love Yourself: Tear") was released in May 2018, the album that almost didn't get released. Suga created the beat and produced this song. The legendary Korean hip-hop trio Epik High heard this song and asked Suga to produce a song for them, which would become "Eternal Sunshine" from their album "Sleepless in _____". Epik High, who was mentioned in BTS song "Hip Hop Lover", inspired RM and Suga to become rappers, but now they are close friends. One of the members, Tablo, is featured on RM's song, "All Day", from his latest album "Indigo".

the chorus was actually a spoiler for the album titles from their love yourself trilogy: love yourself: her love yourself: tear love yourself: answer and love yourself: wonder (not an album, just a short film)

Hi! Both her and tear are outros off the love yourself album series. Love yourself series 3 albums: Ly:her Ly:tear Ly:answer (They also released face yourself after ly her which is a Japanese album) The three albums share the story arc of self love, that we should first love ourselves. In her, they are in love and blinded by that love. Losing their own self to retain the love. the mask is essentially them saying that they change themselves for her(like masking emotions) In tear, they realise that the love feels not real or one sided. They sing about the hearbreak and the pain on this . In answer, they realise that they need to accept themselves. And learn to love themselves some more.

It made me so happy when you said that this love is actually kind of fake, because they literally have a song called “Fake Love”. A lot of people listen to this song and take it at face value as a love songs, I’m really glad to see you discuss the actual lyrics and hidden meanings - you’re completely in line with what my interpretation of the song is too. (I don’t think Suga ever said what the censored thing that he gave up is - I don’t think it’d be drugs, but my theory is possibly cigarettes? Could be anything though as you said, he never clarified to my knowledge.)

Now that we know that Suga wrote his verse to reflect his feelings about showing his best face for ARMY while in fact struggling behind the scenes, I think the thing he gave up can be anything that one has to give up because of success. Maybe rest, because they worked so hard to release music. Maybe the ability to go out freely, maybe a normal life.

this was the end of album love yourself: her which had a brighter tone and before album love yourself:tear which was much darker... like you can listen to the her album from the beginning and read the lyrics and they are bright with love and slowly getting darker in certain songs, and then with this outro, it sounds cheery with the background music but then you realize they lyrics are sadder

Once again I'm absolutely loving your breakdown of the song...👏👏👏👏👏 This is a really underappreciated song in the fandom. But people have been paying more and more attention to recently cus it the song that connects the entire love Yourself message in the albums. This mask the narrator is putting on... the front, its a reflection of the way they see themselves... once a person can accept their own flaws that's when real love is possible. You gotta have love within yourself to have enough to share with the world.

6:30 Ok so both outro her and outro tear are from the LOVE YOURSELF album trilogy(her, tear and answer). LOVE YOURSELF : HER is about a narrator falling in love like it's destiny. Outro her is the last song on the album that leads to the next... its the darkest song on there cus it hints that the love the narrator is in, is not what it seems. LOVE YOURSELF : TEAR is the narrator realising he lost a part of himself cus of this new love. Because of the narrators deepest insecurities, the narrator wears a heavy PERSONA. This persona is not them however... its a very filtered version of them cus the narrator wants to please the other. Hide all their flaws... the narrator is not perfect and they are questioning if this love is even real. LOVE YOURSELF: ANSWER the narrator realises, has an Epiphany. The reason the love wasn't real is because they didn't love themself. How could they try to give love and receive love from another without having love for themself. This series is further expanded in the next bts album series... Map of the Soul. MAP OF THE SOUL PERSONA Is bts talking about the idea of personas and why they exist. Why do people need to appear a certain way. Loving oneself include loving your own persona and making the persona true to who you are. In MAP OF THE SOUL 7 Bts talks about their shadow and ego. Their shadow is the same insecurities the narrator in love Yourself has. The narrator in love Yourself suppressed their shadows and hid them away but in MOTS7 bts says they are going to bring out these dark shadows and embrace them and make them part of themselves. In love Yourself answer the narrator had an Epiphany, that they have to love themselves... In mots7 bts tells you how you can embrace your shadow and accept that it is part of your ego or identify. When you do that self love becomes easy.

HER and TEAR is part of an album trilogy which tells the 4 phases of a story, but told in a different order. The Love YOURSELF trilogy is LY Her, LY Year, and LY Answer, which tells: LY Wonder - Euphoria (song) Joy of meeting LY Her - Development LY Tear - Conflict LY Answer - Resolution All the phases aree teased in Outro Her: Wonder, Her, Tear, and Answer which was released from 2017-2019.
