I've worked in local broadcasting and when there's a hardware problem like a transmitter going down and you need to bring the backup online, you'd be amazed at how quickly the second hand sweeps around the clock face. OTOH, when you get something like a power failure at the studio and there's nothing to do besides calling the boss and answering the 100 phone calls with people asking "Did you know you're off the air?" five minutes seems like an hour.

10:21 was an example of quite poor timing and a coincidence clashing. As they were about to make a joke about Michael Jackson, news of his passing went public. Channel 4 saw the news, and cut the footage to prevent the now distasteful joke, and also pretended it was a general power failure.

I can add context. IIRC, there was a joke about Michael hiring lookalikes to fill in for him to relieve some of the workload. Shortly after they would reveal that they have an exclusive interview with real MJ. 'Michael' would then walk on and speak in an Essex accent

Channel 4 TNT Cut off: Channel 4 feigns a power failure during the broadcast of an episode of TNT, starring Jack Whitehall and Holly Walsh, after a joke is made at the expense of Michael Jackson. At the time of broadcast, reports of Jackson's death were beginning to come through, so there had been no time to re-scrutinize any of the programming. Due to the time delay employed by many broadcasters, Channel 4 were able to, perhaps quite literally, pull the plug before the now-tasteless joke went public.

10:20 is an interesting case of Lost Media. This part would portray some jokes and/or irony about Michael Jackson, but the issue is that there were already rumours that he was dead, therefore, they have cut down the video emission to possibly honour him. As far as I know the issue is that the TNT Show episode was recorded a few days before his death, so that's what the best Channel 4 could possibly do at that moment.

In the States (Where I live), TV channels used to throw up a "Technical Difficulties" bumper and not much else. If there was severe weather, you were likely to see the local meteorologist at the weather desk until they decided to go back to regular programming. These days, we don't get the "Technical difficulties" bumpers. Just a channel bumper that's used when there's no ad space.

Broadcasting something in the wrong aspect ratio, even with the reliance on plus 1 channels and overnight service with little or no staff (or relying on pre-recorded announcements) is a problem faced more and more these days; I'd think. Replacing or fixing it on the plus 1's (or filling in the 'lost' time, be that adverts or programming) could have solved some of these issues. The biggest problem and surely the most embarrassing fault included here had to be the BBC News 2017 with Huw being totally unaware of the situation for so long like that! Just as well he wasn't saying or doing anything unprofessional isn't it? LOL.

As someone who's fixed (and caused) a few. There's not really any procedures to fix such issues - it's just a case of just trying to work out what the problem is and how to fix it/work round it. There can't really be any procedures for the fix as every breakdown is different - however those in channel playout who have to cover fault with slides, announcements and standby programmes will have some, but again it's always different
