I've always felt that UK covers are generally way prettier than the US ones. I have a tendency to order UK editions on bookdepository. But I was definitely swayed by a few of the US ones.

You had wrong cover for Aru Shah USA edition. The right edition has purple bottom where Aru Shah standing in the middle. One side has a yellow/orange lion and other side has a green horse. I hope I'm remembering right animals 😅

I think a lot of this is down to how UK likes the magical feeling in covers and US definitely tries to show the adventure feeling more. So many middle grade books growing up for me here were really into the adventure or dark mystery style, less whimsical. I've grown to really appreciate both. I'm conflicted between my own preference vs my graphic design background and how that helps. I think its almost tied for me. I like the rustic (?) look of many American books, but also I haven't read any of these but Aru Shah (I have the other US version that I think is the actual original, which is the best) so I can't base it on which best represents the feel of the book. Also the UK looks like picture book cover and the US is trying to go for YA style. All this to say, I'm up in the air. Not that it matters. I can barely make decisions in the first place.

A Pinch of Magic - US (the UK one is too busy for me) Frostheart / Voyage of the Frostheart - UK (it drew my eyes immediately) The House with Chicken Legs - UK (I just love the color) The Girl Who Speaks Bear - UK (love the font) The Strangeworlds Travel Agency - US (simply based on the feeling I got from seeing the covers) Rumblestar / Casper Tock and the Everdark Wings - US (it looked more like an adventure to me) Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow - UK (love the color) Amari and the Night Brothers - US (love the font more) Tilly and the Bookwanderers - US (love how the title is placed) Malamander - US (the eye drew my eyes) Aru Shah and the End of Time - UK (love the drawings around the edges and the magical feel) The Train to Impossible Places - UK (it radiates fun, love it!) The Wizards of Once - US (love how the title looks) City of Ghosts - US (the white gives me more a ghost vibe. Red is more zombies) It was really difficult to decide at times. I had the pauze every now and then because I just couldn't make up my mind.

I own The Train To Impossible Places, Tilly And The Bookwonders in hardcover and Nevermore in hardcover. The rest I believe are all paperback in the UK. I want the Nevermoor UK hardback edition so bad because the naked hardback is so beautiful. I had UK 10 US 4 (more than I was even expecting honestly). The ones I thought looked better in the US edition: Rumblestar / Casper Tock and the Everdark Wings. Amari and the Night Brothers. Malamander. The Wizards of Once.

For many of these I haven’t read the books so I feel I’m able to give quite unbiased on those Pinch of Magic - USA Frostbite- UK House Chicken - UK (that was harder) Girl speaks - USA Strange worlds - UK Unmapped Chronicles- USA Nevermoor- UK that one was harder too because I’ve read this so felt biased to it Amari- UK (oh wow, again, I’ve read it. But immediately felt more drawn to the UK) Bookwanderers - UK paperback Malamamder - USA but you almost talked me into switching End time - UK Train - USA Wizards - USA (I’ve read it and this was the only one I’ve seen both covers, but still hard) City Ghosts - USA Thanks again!

It is like the UK but there are spirit animals too) I like that one best/Train to Impossible Places-US/Wizards of Once-UK/City of Ghosts-US I think I have 5 UK, 7 US and one undecided. Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow - UK Amari and the Night Brothers - this is difficult but I think US Tilly and the Bookwanderers - UK Malamander - I had never seen the US cover 👀 but i'd say UK Aru Shah and the End of Time - UK The Train to Impossible Places - UK The Wizards of Once - none ( not a fan of either) City of Ghosts - UK

Here's my favourites of the books: (I'll rate them as a vote, as if 10 people have a vote each) A Pinch of Magic: US (8-2) Frostheart: UK (8-2) The House With Chicken Legs: US (6-4) The Girl Who Speaks Bear: Split decision (5-5) The Strangeworlds Travel Agency: UK (6-4) Rumble Star: UK (7-3) Nevermoor: US (6-4) Amari: If there was ever a split decision, it's this. (5-5) Tilly and the Book Wanderers: US (6-4) Malamander: UK (9-1) Aru Shah: UK (7-3) The Train to Impossible Places: US (8-2) The Wizards of Once: US (7-3) City of Ghosts: US (7-3) US: 7, UK: 5, Split decision: 2

I haven't read any of these books (my list follows after this text), I have some of them on my TBR. I agree, middle grade books usually have great covers. In general I love illustrated and colourful covers. As someone from the Netherlands who also reads books in English, we sometimes have a choice which version of a book we get, US or UK. Sometimes though there is no choice and it's just one or the other, depending. I have some mismatching series because of this, because sometimes only one version is available to buy. Because of import tax, I do not order from US websites as that would be costly. I almost always try to order from websites or shops in the Netherlands nowadays, and sometimes there is only 1 edition to buy. With the pandemic I'm only buying books online as I do not go into physical shops, but I do look forward to going back to physical shops once a lot of people have been vaccinated etc. So I have both US and UK editions on my shelves, though I don't often own more than one edition of the same book (because I usually prefer to spend that money on another book rather than the same one but with a different cover. There are exceptions though). I think overall, with my collection taken into account (so not just middle-grade), I lean a bit more towards liking UK covers more, but there are also some books where I love the US cover more. My list: A Pinch of Magic 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (I can't choose!) Frostheart / Voyage of the Frostheart 🇬🇧 The House with Chicken Legs 🇬🇧 The Girl Who Speaks Bear 🇺🇸 The Strangeworlds Travel Agency 🇬🇧 Rumblestar / Casper Tock and the Everdark Wings 🇺🇸 Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow 🇺🇸 Amari and the Night Brothers 🇺🇸 Tilly and the Bookwanderers 🇬🇧 paperback, 2nd 🇺🇸 hardback Malamander 🇬🇧 Aru Shah and the End of Time 🇬🇧 The Train to Impossible Places 🇬🇧 The Wizards of Once 🇺🇸 City of Ghosts 🇺🇸

I agreed with everything but malamander and train to impossible places. The uk books had more classic storybook decorations with borders and more detail, the U.s. are more stripped down and draw the eye to a few bold features.

I really love the a pinch of magic UK one the most by far! I also like frostheart UK because it has the framing to it. I have to admit I tend to usually like UK covers overall and it's rare I ever prefer US. I like Amari covers equally too!

I think the pages & co paperback covers are the same for both UK and US version. Im in Canada (we get US covers) and ordered the paperback off amazon and received that UK paperback cover you showed. For Aru Shah i have never seen that US cover. The one i have is closer to the UK version but like more zoomed out with like spirit/ghost (i havent read it so dont know) animals. For Wizards of Once i believe the UK cover is also US hardcover and the US version you showed is just soft cover. I could be wrong on that one though.

I was going to comment which was my favourite for each book, but it turns out that we basically have the same opinion on almost every one lol. The big difference is I prefer the UK for Amari. When it comes to Middle Grade, I usually find the UK superior. The art is gorgeous, there's often foiling (I'm a hoe for foiling I'm obsessed with it) and it has a vibe I can't quite find in the US ones, it's more magical I guess.

YOU COO OKAY PLAYING ALONG A Pinch of Magic - UK. I'll always love that art style. The US looks younger. Frostheart / Voyage of the Frostheart - UK purely for the colour scheme. Imagine designing your own book cover though!! The US one looks more like a graphic novel. If they did a GN edition that would be an awesome cover The House with Chicken Legs - This is impossible. The UK style is similar to A Pinch of Magic which I adore.. I'm with you completely. It's so hard to pick because I appreciate the skill the US one took. I think I'm UK though, purely as the US is somewhat more YA looking to me? The Girl Who Speaks Bear - Definitely UK. I like the US one but I'm more drawn to the UK for this one. The Strangeworlds Travel Agency - Ok I think US for this. The UK is too busy. Rumblestar / Casper Tock and the Everdark Wings - The old UK cover is my fave. I adore Abi Elphinstone Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow - Ok so the UK paperback ANNOYS ME SO MUCH AS THE GUYS PATCH IS ON THE WRONG EYE. I think I prefer the US version bc giant cat Amari and the Night Brothers - I think US cover. I feel like the UK's is slightly whitewashing due to the light which is so nitpicky but *shrug* Tilly and the Bookwanderers - I CAN'T PICK. If we had the US cover details (the corners and the series title bit) but with the UK Hardback main art (the circle with Tilly in it) Malamander - UK ALL DAY Aru Shah and the End of Time - UK. omgggg The Train to Impossible Places - AH I LOVE THEM BOTH. I refuse to pick. ok no I can pick i just don't want to admit the US is my fave. The Wizards of Once - I love both again but I think the UK. It's darker vibes which I'm enjoying City of Ghosts - UK HANDS DOWN. The Edinburgh skyline looks more edinburgh in the UK one lol 9 UK - 4 US. one undecided lol

I like the us edition of The house with chicken legs just as much as the uk edition. It’s almost a scene from a movie. And I love the colour. But the ik edition is also really beautiful. The girl who speaks bear from the uk is more beautiful

I wish you would have looked at the covers for Murder Most Unladylike (Murder is bad manners in the US) because they couldn't be more different from each other. Most UK are way better than the American ones and I don't know why

given that in the us we have this bad habit of using movie and tv stills for covers, its really not surprising that the uk almost always has better covers than us. i just wish the uk versions were easier to get.

I'm opposite I'm getting the American edition of Amari and now plan on getting the UK edition because I love it so much more. Also that us edition of Aru shah is different from that. The one I have is similar to the uk with Aru, but it has the animal spirits? Hard for me to explain

I agree. I think the US covers are simpler with a few bold features rather than lots of detail to attract the eye from far away. It helps them sell. I don't know about the uk but in the US readership for kids isn't strong in my experience so drawing them in quickly helps. Most will pass books with lots of detail on the cover as it makes you associate the book as also being very detailed, which in their mind = slow and boring. Not true but that is my theory.
