I remember in season 2 when Hinata wanted to learn something new, but Ukai told him it's better to just stick to what he knows. But when he asked grandpa Ukai for advice, he got yelled at and was told that a coach doesn't tell the player what they can and can't do, only how to do it. It was a nice quick lesson and you saw his dedication afterwards when he went to talk to Tobio next.

Also interesting how everyone who talked Hinata out of learning the new quick were and are Setters. Suga, Kageyama, and Ukai was also a setter

@@XZA.B i think it might be (this is just my idea) on how setters perceive strategy. that it's important for things to stay normal, because being a setter requires adjusting to what their spikers want, and ultimately it's very difficult to adjust to really new ideas and attacks.

@@SkreltNL good point i think regarding to your comment and my original comment, the really important difference between a good setter and a superb setter is their ability to not only take risks, but to also make sure every set be adjustable to their own player ofc the job of a setter is to make the ball hittable, but a very good setter is able to make that ball not just hittable, but ideal for their spikers. which is why kageyama improves after that advice from oikawa, alongside coach ukai's saying of *the best set is a set that the player can hit easily, and in order to learn that, you must first know the condition of your spiker*

I remember in a post credit scene where Ukai was telling his grandfather that he was working towards the nationals for “his boys”. It was really sweet bc it showed how much he cared for the players. It was such a great change in their relationship bc I think that he only agreed to be their permanent coach in order to fulfill his own dreams of beating Nekoma.

Honestly for me, the true unsung hero of Karasuno is Takeda Sensei. The man who did not know anything about volleyball, but made sure his students lived their dreams in any way possible. His tenacity was the reason why Karasuno, the flightless crows, grew their wings again and flew really high. If Takeda Sensei never begged to Ukai Sensei to coach the team, never begged Nekomata Sensei to organize matches, Karasuno wouldn't have been able to stand up back again. I believe Takeda Sensei is the most underrated character of the anime.

The funniest part is that I'm pretty sure Ukia isn't even Karasuno's official coach. It's Takeda. Ukia always has Takeda call the timeouts. And in the Shiratorizawa game, the announcer had Takeda stand for Karasuno. This madlad has been tresspassing onto Karasuno everyday to volunteer coach without any approval, title, or pay. What a man.

I also love the video he asks to be made for the Nationals, knowing how it will make them more comfortable with their plays as they've watched all that they've accomplished so far. Also how he tries to make the comunity involved with the team and is ALWAYS OPEN to try new things, even in game (Hinata's block approach is the first thing that comes to my mind with this), or when Tsuki tries something that isn't in the system (I don't remember exactly what was it) and he tells him "I won't complain if you can make it" or something like that. The fact that he listens to his players and don't treat them like stupid kids, but as equals always makes me smile. I love him so much

"They call it psychology, I call it man management." - Sir Alex Ferguson. "I always felt that our triumphs were an expression of the consistent application of discipline." - Sir Alex Ferguson. I think Coach Ukai's whole character is inspired by this. He not only coaches player's technique and game ability but also their minds. He treats every player on his team equally, gives them personal attention, and just does enough to push them to their limits, but also knows when to stop so that he doesn't break players' minds or hamper their progress. He understands each and every player under him very well, recognizes their talents and flaws, and actively wants to hone them, even scaredly cats like Kinoshita and Yamaguchi aren't afraid because Ukai's confidence in them gave them the bravery and hope they were missing all this time. He is the constructor of the team, not a dictator like coach Washijou. He wants to instill a certain style of play in Karasuno but not at the cost of the player's happiness or enjoyment. He wants them to have fun, even if they lose, but he also wants the lessons learned from the losses to motivate them to victory. He knows his tune, and he expects his players to dance on it, but isn't afraid of changing a few notes here and there if it makes the team better. He is rigid but not suffocative, disciplined but not a control freak, serious but not a tyrant. He does the best and expects the best. In the end, his willpower, intelligence, adaptability, and discipline make Karasuno HIS team, and not his grandfather's team of the past, which he is quick to point out to his grandpa in the post-credit scene of the last episode of Season 4. I'll just leave it here: "Perhaps the most important element of each activity is to inspire a group of people to perform at their very best. The best teachers are unsung heroes and heroines of the society." -Sir Alex Ferguson

This anime hits so close to home, and the story of each individual is so relatable, making every scene feel so incredibly real. I think that's why I can watch it over and over again. The story itself is so well written and filled with comedy and emotion. Thank you for making this video, it made me love our coach Ukai Keishin even more. My favorite scene of his was when he was talking sense into hinata when he snuck into the youth camp and he ended by saying, "do not understimate what it takes to be a ball boy." Ukai is literally my favorite. Maybe it's because I'm a teacher now, but Karasuno's success wouldn't have been possible without him. I love the Shiratorizawa moment Ukai had, doubley so because of the voice actor's last words. What also gets me, is in Inarizaki's match, the morale that ebbs and flows is something he's always aware of, and understands that it doesn't have to come from him. He consciously lets Hinata's infectious victories lead the team's morale, knowing that he wasn't needed in that moment. It's not a coincidence that ever since Ukai came, Karasuno has soared, even post-time skip. Ugh my heart. And I love that he's transparent that he wasn't the best player, being benched the whole time. He wasn't the smartest either. But he's a damn good coach.

i think, for me, ukai’s most noticeable scene is when somewhere in season 2 yamaguchi plays it safe and goes for a normal serve instead of his jump float serve. ukai gets angry, angry at yamaguchi for giving up his one weapon. that scene showed that he didn’t just care about winning or points or getting the ball over the net, but that he cared about his players too. ukai wanted yamaguchi to be able to play, to be able to fight on the same court as his teammates. he was angry because yamaguchi had one chance and he threw it away. i think that stood out to me because it showed that he cared about the team as more that just a coach. he wasn’t just a coach who wanted wins and points, he was a coach who wanted players to believe in themselves and their teammates. he wants his students to be able to fight the tough battles. he was as much a mentor and a teacher as he was a coach.

Been binging your Haikyuu videos since morning and I got to admit, this is my favourite of them all. The way you highlight each character and their personalities is impeccable. I would like to see your take on the 'Ungrateful second years' and would also like to recommend another sports anime, Ahiru no Sora. Keep up the great work, looking forward to your next video (Also congratulations on the 4k Subscribers!!!)

I never go on KZbin to post anything (purely a watcher) but I’d like to say that haikyu has quite literally changed my life. I began to practice volleyball every single day for hours. I made a team of my friends and entered leagues. We got trounced all the time but I didn’t give up. A few years passed and a club (Downstate Volleyball Club) offered me an assistant coaching job. This year I’ve been given my own expansion team of low-mid level players. I plan on surprising the circuit like Karasuno did.

As someone who completely bows down to the writing in Haikyuu, this video made me love it that much more. This is so great! I think it’s my favorite anime. And that’s huge from someone as indecisive as i am lmao!

I love the chat with Suga because we, as viewers, are lead to consider Ukai's position on the setter matter as potentially accurate given its basis in reality. And the show does a good job of framing it in terms we are familiar with: playing only one game is understandably upsetting when you know how much value Hinata and Kageyama see in playing just one more game. But then comes Suga completely escaping Ukai's reasoning and declaring that he's not sacrificing himself for the team: he's happy to sit on the bench as long as that gives them the best chance of winning because each time Karasuno gets to play another game Suga gets another chance to play with his friends.

he is the best coach who doesn't hold his student to keep sticking with his personal concept but also help them to grown up and let them choose their decision. also we can't forgot about the artist behind karasuno's raising era after their tragic downfall, TAKEDA ITTETSU. he literally begging and kneeling after every team just to make sure that his children have a same chance, same experience, he's really said "please, believe in my children, they can"

I read the manga for the first 4 seasons after watching the anime, and young Ukai seems to be much more timid in the first seasons and less confident. Like when takeda tells him to not look stressed in front of the team, and when he looks at yamaguchi’s mentor with a look of despair.

I suddenly remember my coach in high school, the time I was doubting myself as our team's setter. He told me precisely "without you, all of your team mates will be nothing. Without you as a setter, none of this spikers have the chance to score or spike." Just a simple words, words to make me just do it even if I am scared. Just do it, you don't know it but it will give you more without even realizing it. Damn, high school days..

I think Keishin Ukai was meant to be their coach instead of his grandfather he understands what it's like being left on the bench, and not getting the chance to play, he understands the feeling of losing and helpless most importantly he understands learning from your mistakes, and pushing through the game even when you are tired he understands the value of hard work so, yeah I really think he was meant to be their coach either.

the unsung hero of Karasuno High is Teacher Takeda, as due to his persistence, he will not be able to convince Ukai to coach the team, to reconnect to Nekoma, to join training camps, and to book practice games with other teams... and mostly pays from the expenses out of his own pocket...
