I feel like there's something I need to clarify that has been misinterpreted a couple of times - Nowhere in this video do I say that Oikawa is a goody-two-shoes. I don't state or imply that Oikawa does anything his teammates ask of him, or that there isn't compromise and discussion. What I did say is that he has "a setting style that gets the best out of his team-mates by learning their likes, dislikes, habits and strengths, and delivering sets that adhere to those aspects perfectly." They adhere to their strengths, NOT necessarily to exactly what they tell him to do. As has been mentioned, there are scenes throughout the series where Oikawa asks his spikers to alter something to adjust to his sets because he believes that his set is actually what they need, and thinks they just need to think or respond to it differently to get the best out of it. That is that selflessness that I mentioned - his sets put the player's strengths and needs at the forefront, and his personality is always quite amicable and focused on them (contrasting Atsumu's ego). A lot of times it's what they want, but sometimes it isn't. But as I said in the video, Kageyama misinterpreted Oikawa's words by believing that his advice about Hinata's new quick should be applied to all aspects of his game, when Oikawa didn't mean that at all. And instead, Kageyama believed that he should listen to whatever his players want in any context and give it to them exactly, exaggerating and simplifying that advice. Additionally, I need to stress again that this comparison of Oikawa and Atsumu being at opposite ends of the spectrum was only referring to Kageyama's perception, not necessarily reality. They're opposite ends of the spectrum in Kageyama's mind given the limited information Kageyama has and the words he received from them, but not in actuality. They're two contrasting philosophies in a tug-of-war *for Kageyama*, but that doesn't mean that they're literally opposite in reality. They just oppose one another in terms of their "advice" and how their words manifest in Kageyama's mind. Because this is a video about Kageyama's mental state and how he conceptualizes things. If we're talking about reality, then Atsumu's setting style actually isn't too different from Oikawa's in that he knows his sets are ideal for his spikers and he's so brash and egoistic sometimes BECAUSE he takes their needs into account as well when setting. There are lots of subtleties in their styles that interestingly make them similar in ways, even though their outlooks and personalities are quite different. But as I said, what matters here is not what the setters truly are like, but how their words impact Kageyama's internal struggle - and Kageyama doesn't really understand these nuances. As such, they oppose each other in a difficult way in Kageyama's mind, until Hinata helps him find his own identity. Thanks for watching!

The return of the king is honestly one of my favorite moments in the entirety of Haikyuu. Kageyama is constantly developed, showing how deeply his middle school experience affected him, and we can see how such experiences don't just suddenly disappear in one day, and how going the complete opposite way to fix a mistake isn't always the answer. Haikyuu is such a great series, people who label it as an "anime for fangirls" are missing out on Furudate's amazing writing

The Haikyuu fandom is one of the nicest fandoms I've ever met, people don't start dumb ship wars and are actually very chill, whether you like to ship everyone or no one at all. If people judge an anime based on how the fandom handles ships, they are being quite shallow. Why does shipping have to give off a bad impression, I find it a pretty interesting way to explore characters. Furthermore, many people who like sports anime aren't interested in the real life sport, they're interested in the characters and how they play sport, while growing as people, all things you can't see while watching sports in real life. I don't see anything wrong with liking sports anime and not liking real life sports. I mean, if watching an anime makes you interested in the actual sport, all the better, but it shouldn't be a requirement

I think it's partly because Hinata genuinely wants to see those around him enjoy the sport. He sees people as rivals, but not to the point that he wants them to do bad, because he also wants people to be on par with their skills and strive to do their best because thats also maybe what inspires him. Plus, he isn't petty. He has a friendly nature at heart, and enjoys playing the sport with those around him, especially if they're on his team.

Hinata Shoyo is that refreshing representation of someone who truly loves what they're doing. Be it in a loss, or victory or even practice, he is simply hungry to learn more and better himself but can recognize and even praise the skills of opponents. That mentality makes those around you and those that face you remember something that many forget the harder and more intense the sport gets. We started playing because we enjoy the game and want to win. Hinata embodies the childlike love of the sport and when you see someone having such fun, it makes you strive to have that kind of fun as well.

Really reminds me of when we were told the twins’ backstory, their Ace commented that the luckiest thing Atsumu had was not his talent, but his twin, who while not as good with him, always strive to be right there with him. Atsumu basically have the same story as Kageyama, it’s just that he was lucky enough to have a dumbass who was always there with him from the start. Kageyama is also lucky, in a way. Hinata might not be with him from the start, but he is passionate and well, ‘hungry’ in a way Osamu wasn’t, or at least, not as much. Their match was truly exceptional, the battle between two duos of idiots who had a lot more in common than they thought. I think it’s very neat that the finally confrontation was the test of their synergy, between the twin’s quick and KageHina’s block, and it turned out that the coin fell on Karasuno’s side that time. Also, on that duality and mirror image theme, I think one of the reason Kageyama was able to relax with Hinata right from the start, the constant look of almost awe when they were starting out and Hinata hit his spike was because just as Kageyama is desperate to have his toss be hit and never be abandoned, Hinata is desperate to have someone toss to him and just to have someone there for him. Hinata barely scrape together enough teammates for his middle school match and always have random people tossed to him, so when he had Kageyama tossed to him, he loved spiking, and always go above and beyond to keep playing. Kageyama, who always had to tell people to keep up with his level of passion, who thought he had to tone it down after being abandoned by his teammates, of course, must have found it comforting, hence never been afraid to push Hinata forwards. With a few exception, though Hinata would then be the one to demand him to step up. Thanks for reading lol

Mi Hara Hinata’s hunger is one of the most overlooked aspects of his character. The creator really made it his mission to show the different psychologies that effect the dynamic of the game. It’s easy to have a shallow perspective of Hinata. I think he just has a little more depth to his character. “Hunger is the best spice”

7:08 "He truly cares for Karasuno" This actually hit me hard (Manga Spolier) Its takes me back when Karasuno lost to Kamomedai and Suga was talking about how the second years and first years should "continue" where they left off. Then Kageyama speaks up saying "But I wanted to go further with this team". This scene actually made me cry. From watching the first episode of him talking about how he wished to do all things himself. From now thinking how much he cares for his teammates. Yall may talk about Tsukishima's character development, but this one is somewhat underrated.

Probably because Tsukishima's character arc is more literal and explained in a much simpler way, that even the dumbest people who only watch for fun and don't even try to analyze a thing could understand. Kageyama's (and Oikawa's, for another example) aren't like that. We need to concentrate more. Think more. And empathize more. And we need to set aside our tendency to be judgmental-for kageyama, who's we've known for a long time but never really understand, and for Oikawa, who tends to be hated. Haikyuu's story crafting and storytelling is so amazing that I always find something new whenever I rewatch/reread. Can't get enough of them... truly a masterpiece. Something fun that you can use for life guide. True art. ಥ‿ಥ

And to hit the nail in, [MANGA SPOILER] his words for Karasuno at the last few chapters where he inwardly says how grateful he is for his Karasuno teammates, for how they really helped him change (one of) his perspectives in volleyball, and himself. Furudate-sensei really knows how to deal the finishing blows in his characters' inner monologs. A gratitude for the team may be something so simple, yet, BECAUSE it's Kageyama, it became something more emotional than it usually would be. Crap, I miss Haikyuu so much!

Kindaichi was really perfect. At first, I didnt understood why he refused to apologize to Kageyama even though he deeply regretted his actions towards him. SPOILER ALERTS: In the latest chapter of the manga Furudate does make him into a king of the court again. Thankfully this time he is a benevolent king who is able to understand and use his teammates in the best way possible. Also, the author emphasizes the idea of the "king of the court" by stating that every move in the court is controlled by Kageyama. What I like about the chapter is that you can see that Kageyama does accept the title of the King rather than rejecting it like how he used to do in his younger years. Similarly to Hinata as how he accepts and takes pride in the title of the "ultimate decoy' rather than being recognized as an "ace". I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense. ep 23 of season 4 is the perfect payoff for kageyamas character arc. when tanaka made that insane line shot, kageyama finally embraced his role as the type of setter he wants to be. thinking about whats the situation on the court and how tanaka is feeling, his strengths, his weaknesses, all that while looking for a way to improvbe tanaka as a hitter, resulting an insane line shot which only some of the best spikers can do. and thats what his job is as a setter. truly magnificent character writing

I love this video! I love the point you make where Kageyama never really had a team that understood and supported him to try and make him better. One thing I noticed too was that he always yelled at Hinata, but Hinata never really seemed to care. He was scared, but in his childish nature of his. I think that's when Kageyama realized that Hinata didn't really take himself too seriously, that he was a kid that was invincible to shit talk and toxicity because he knew the things Kagayema said were never serious and never selfish, but for his older more mature teammates, he was often scared to because they weren't jumping around laughing

one of the reasons i love season four so much is because everyone in karasuno really feels like they've become close friends as well as teammates. every member has always known the kind of people the others are, their playing styles, personalities, humor, habits etc. they've practiced and fought together based off that knowledge, adjusting and accommodating to each other as teammates should. now in season four - i'm not sure how to put it into words - but they feel like more than teammates. their jokes bounce off each other more and everyone seems to really love and accept the others.. got me all emo over here

THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this video! I believe that kageyama's growth is one of the best *slow burn* in haikyuu. You can see his never ending attempt to be better in each episode. Sometimes it's really subtle, but it's there. And also thank you for including *those* scenes from the ending, i think it was one of the most beautiful kageyama ever been. I really appreciate that you mentioned Oikawa and Atsumu and how Kageyama doesn't have to be neither of them but himself. Also it's really fascinating to perceive Kindaichi's feelings towards Kageyama. Ever since season 1 we knew that he acknowledged Kageyama as a great player and now we're at season 4 we could really tell that he's sorry and feel bad about what happened back in junior high. Tbh i never quite understood the nature of Kageyama to me he's one of the simplest yet the most complex character in haikyuu. I really like how Kageyama changes from one unapologetic extreme of the spectrum to the other extreme of it, in a subtle way(so subtle in fact that I wouldn't have noticed if not for Atsumu) only to then accommodate himself in a middle ground that suits both him and karasuno as a glove. I miss playing volleyball with my teamates and I just practite alone in my home right now because of the virus. I am a little empty inside because I had never had the desire to play volleyball this much before as I have never been away from vollleyball for that much time. But your videos and the 4th season of the anime cover the fact that I can't play and still makes me feel cozy just like when I am still in the court. Continue the good work and never forget about me. As someone who wanted to give volleyball a go but never had the chance to, (I.e. Covid-19, school shutdown- no ball.) it became an extremely disheartening thing for me- but after seeing videos like these I just start thinking that- although I can't play volleyball now or tomorrow, that doesn't mean I shouldn't practice and work hard so I can get just one chance to stand on a court in the distant future and play. And the mindset that if I succeed- I can play even more Volleyball!

Kageyama is called a "King" for a reason. His personality, his life changes among with his struggles and experiences combined, all make him fit for that name. And his role has been the biggest one in the entire Haikyuu series. He was the most misunderstood character, but he is known as the most genius and talented player, Karasuno team has ever been gifted with. No one cares more about the team than Kageyama does and if Daichi wasn't the captain, Tobio would take that place with ease. Because he had experience being one in his old middle school team as well.

I love the analysis, but i feel like one of the important factor to point out with the whole, "his path is not Oikawa's" is the fact that the whole Goody-two-shoes thing that Kageyama went through is that he didnt understand that he was allowed to argue , he was probably scared of coming across as the king of the court as you said. When Oikawa told him to give the Hinata the set that he wanted, Oikawa probably meant that, but at the same time i would like to point out that there is a flashback when Karasuno is facing Seijoh (dont remember which one but its an official match) Where he tells Kindaichi to still go for the broad attack that he can't reach, even after Kindaichi tells him the set is a bit too far away for him. Which later means that the broad attack is a powerful weapon against Karasuno. Doing this Oikawa manages to increase the abilities of his teammates, and its this that Kageyama needed to start doing, and what i think Atsumu realised he wasn't doing, nor even attempting to do.

Oikawa actually settles for "good enough". He adjust to players so seamlessly he loses his own power as a setter although sometimes tries to regain it (dumps). But the fact remains Oikawa thinks of how he can fit anywhere effortlessly while Kageyama thinkgs of how to make team effective with his sets. While Oikawa's advise isn't bad it isn't for Kageyama who is few levels higher than Oikawa as well as Karasuno. His sense of game is so big he sees things others do not see in themselves yet. But the fear of being left alone on the court and LOSE (which is what really scares Kageyama most) is what is holding him back. Oikawa draws in his players what they already have. Kageyama could draw from the players what they don't even know they had. That is why when Kageyama says to Hinata: "you can jump higher" is when he himself realises the undeveloped potential of Hinata. ANd as a setter that wants to win he wants to make this potential go with his sets and that is why he yells at Hinata so much - because he knows how much potential he has before Hinata himself realises that, to say nothing of the team...

Atsumu played like the new redefined Kageyama, so when he met him at the youth group he was able to pick up that Kagayama played a completely different game style than Atsumu thought he would. Kagayema was playing a little to tailored to others. So when they end up playing against each other at nationals, and Kageyama has already gone through his stint of becoming the new king, Atsumu and Kageyama are able to verse each other playing very similar styles of gameplay… It just so happens that Kageyama was able to read the super fast twin quick because himself and Hinata have been using it constantly before then. Very interesting that Atsumu pushed Kageyama to improve by messing with him, basically creating his defeat.

I have a lot to say.. but one thing is for sure and what I love about this Anime.. because of how many hardships each character is having and how they overcome this. I love Hinata and Kageyama's love hate relationship because of that friendship, they were able to build each other up to be better, pushing each other to be better and they can win the battle against themselves. I'm always curious why I got so obsessed with this Anime. I've watched a lot of Anime, Manga, Webtoon, or other stuffs. I like all what I've seen or read, but Haikyuu is different, I got extremely obsessed and rewatching episodes. Then I realized that I got so hooked because they help me improve my emotions. I somehow see myself to some of the characters. It's like this anime helps me through hardships in my life. Seeing all the Characters on how they grow and how they battle their own problems makes this Series the best I've seen.

Spoilers on how scary Kageyama will be in the future: Just so you know Shoyo-kun... this is your fault. You were the one who woke him up. I have no idea why he was so scared at the start, but at camp he was a really goodie-two-shoes who fell over himself trying to please his hitters. But then that first Spring Tourney? Hoo! It was like he was a totally different guy. He broke out these demanding sets that would've totally overwhelmed any average hitter. But you guys... that whole team of yours... you stepped up to the plate and you answered him. Do you see it now? Do you see how freaking scary it is? You lot of Karasuno took Tobio-kun and you taught him he could do whateeeeeever he wanted and get away with it. Hinata: holy crap, that's scary!

I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this. When there is the crevice between Kageyama and the rest of Karasuno, Hinata actually comes from the side that Kageyama is on. I think that's really important to show that Kageyama finally found someone that pursues greatness just as much as he does. I think it was very symbolically important. Or it was just a complete accident and the producers didnt' think about it lol.

My favorite moment that displays EXACTLY what this is about, is with Tsukki "taking flight" against Inarizaki. It is the most blatantly obvious showing of Kageyama being able to tell his teammate they can do better without being a dick about it. Simply saying: "Hey, you can jump higher, so I'm just gonna toss higher, deal with it" and gaining another powerful attacking option with it. Brilliant show

Kageyama is how you do a grumpy, somewhat tsundere-y character right. Instead of just making dishonesty their whole personality, you actually give them both understandable struggles, admirable motivations to push past them, and you tie their progression in both character and role(whether that be a generic magic swordsmen or a volleyball setter in a sports anime) to their ability to interact with others. There’s a reason even small moments like Kageyama’s first high-ten with Tanaka she both such a big deal and so funny. It’s because that kind of enthusiasm and openness with other people is something both foreign and somewhat intimidating(this is reflected in the dark shadows of Tanaka’s face, the grey and lifeless background, and the change to a rougher style during said high ten to show the intense discomfort Kageyama feels) to him, but he pushes past it anyway because it’ll allow him to serve his team better. THIS is how you make an audience love a character that is specifically written to be aggressive, somewhat socially inept, egotistical, and inflexible from the get-go. Sorry if this seems pointless, but Kageyama makes it incredibly clear to me that the only reason I hate almost all characters of a similar archetype regardless of which anime they’re in is because they rely on said archetype’s popularity to get by instead of treating them like a legitimate character and giving it their all, like in Haikyuu!!.

My thoughts of Kageyama... 1. Kageyama faced so many talented players like Ushiwaka and Atsumu throughout his career, but the only two people that he truly feared were Oikawa the not genius and Hinata who was too short for the sport. In fact, even back in middle school, Kageyama respected Hinata's spirit even though Hinata was basically a level 0. I think that says something amazing about Kageyama's value system. 2. Karasuno was lucky to get Kageyama... but Kageyama was extremely lucky to land in Karasuno too. While Karasuno was not strong, it was not weak either. And while Kageyama was not going to win many friends with his charming personality, there was of course Hinata, and also there was Suga taking Kageyama under his wings, a move that was kind of underrated. Imagine if Suga had a similar personality to Oikawa, things would have gone very differently. 3. The crowning of the new king was an amazing scene. There is nothing wrong with Kageyama's competitiveness and intense personality, he didn't need to change who he was, but the world was not obligated to tolerate his anger management issues either, and that toxic gamer attitude was in fact counter productive. And later we see that Kageyama was at his prime when he became Kalm Kageyama.

HQ analysis videos are so damn good! One thing to add: Not only is Atsumu a different person (ie. you can't just replicate someone and expect the same result), he also had Osamu. In the flashbacks, we can see the other kids didn't like Atsumu all that much. Atsumu could've fallen into a similar situation as Kageyama if not for his brother's intervention and constant presence/support.

No wonder none could keep up with them in their glory days, the team was an ever-changing beast and right now they are getting back on track again. Man... Haikyuu is just 100 character arcs disguised in a sports-anime-trenchcoat, but it doesn't always directly state what a character's thoughts, motivations, or developments are. So sometimes I struggle a little with understanding certain things. Kageyama and his team during this part of the story was one. I wasn't exactly sure what was going on with him or how "yeah lol go back to being a king" was good. I sorta just assumed I was missing the point, but that whatever was happening was a good thing. This video helped a lot with that! There's a difference between a tyrant and a real king. A tyrant expects and demands at the cost of the people he rules, but a real king gives and takes for the good of the people under his care. Between a servant, a tyrant, and a king, you'd want a king at the center of your team. And that's what Kageyama actually is now!

This is a great video. It hits deeply for me. Essentially, he shouldn’t reject his nature but integrate it into who he is now. Many times as we grow we tend to suppress parts of us that we deem as bad or not ideal and struggle to deal with them when they pop back up. As Carl Jung said... it is not about suppressing the subconscious but mixing it in with the conscious to truly find who you are. Like you said. Kageyama does not need to be on any side of the coin, he can find his own way by being the mix of both the sides while integrating his own past. Great video Alec!
