Choosing the right flat roof joists:
Span: Consider the distance between supporting walls or beams to determine the required joist span capacity.
Load: Account for the weight of the roof covering, insulation, any stored materials, and potential snow loads.
Budget: Timber joists are generally the most cost-effective option, while open web joists and concrete joists are more expensive.
Building regulations: Ensure your chosen joists comply with relevant UK building regulations for structural safety and thermal performance.
It's always recommended to consult a qualified structural engineer or builder for advice on selecting and installing the appropriate flat roof joists for your specific project. They can help you choose the right material, size, and spacing for your joists based on your specific needs and ensure the roof structure meets all necessary safety and building code requirements.

Prefer flat roofs? And lanterns, well they give light but both are more difficult to keep water ingress over long periods unless installed by Robin et al. A pitched roof every time for me.

Great tip on the firring, I have a 11x5m roof to tackle in the next couple of weeks. Am I right in thinking that you dont need to use a timber wall plate on the inner leaf of the blocks? Instead can you rest the joist on dpc and use a twist strap off the wall (at appropriate spacing) to hold the roof down

I like the idea of putting the hangers on first, I end up spiking a couple nails through the joists to the wall plate then putting the hangers round after, but then it means being on a ladder putting twist nails in. I’d be interested to see your way of pitching off behind the lantern, I tend to cut a furring piece like a valley rafter and send it to the corner of the lantern. Thanks for the share always learning 👍

Out of interest, rather than using long furing strips, why don't you just tilt the joist by a small angle. PS not a builder ;-)

Because the ceiling wouldnt be leval inside if you tilted the joist

Can have sloped joists but just need firrings above the plasterboard... Flat with firrings on top is easier.
@DICEGEORGE
@DICEGEORGE 7 ай бұрын
im having a sloping osb ceiling in my extension, showing the joists underneath it because the osb and kingspan will be above it. Looks good, and honest to the slope of the roof.
@ColinDH12345
@ColinDH12345 7 ай бұрын
@@DICEGEORGE Agreed. That's what I did but then it's an old house with 'character' so a sloping ceiling doesn't matter. I think we are a bit obsessed with level ceilings.
