At last, a concise yet comprehensive lesson on the essential points in executing the Uki-goshi. Most books and videos I've seen, and even instructors with whom I am acquainted tend to dismiss Uki-goshi as a "lazy man's Ogoshi", but Sensei Riki has validated my long-standing belief that it is a legitimate AND combat-efficient throw: it can be executed with great speed since a complete 180° pivot isn't necessary; the hip check and/or shoulder stop blunt the force of an onrushing attack; the quarter turn affords greater safety since tori does not turn his or her back completely on the attacker; and the throw done by twisting the hip rather than lifting uke makes it viable against much heavier opponents. The hidari version is particularly useful against stiff-arming right handed opponents---a huge plus for me since I'm left-handed. Best of all, if I recall correctly Uki-goshi was the favorite throw of Professor Jigoro Kano. This waza will be the main subject of my first training session for the New Year 2023. Domo arigato and Happy Holidays to Sensei Riki and all the members ofthe Riki Dojo. IPPATSU SHOBU! 🥋🎅☃️🎄🎁🍾🥂🎉🎊🙏😃

Thank you for saying so! We had to badger Riki sensei for years before he'd let us record his teachings. They're too good not to preserve for posterity.

I don´t like to criticize my country´s judo but I have seen so many debates with uki goshi that is video has taught me a lot, looks simple and is similar to the way my oldest sensei taught me but some people love to say the real uki goshi is the huge elevation version you can see sometimes in competition or in some sambo matches. Arigatouu !

Riki sensei always tells us to not contradict the teachers in the dojo if they tell you something is contrary to what you know, but boy is that hard to do! Buena suerte!

@@RikiDojoUSA Yeah that is what I do but obviously there´s confusion in some fundamentals here. Thanks for answering.

I love the material you upload, it makes these things have sense and not be chaotic. Makes you re-admire judo... You wouldn't happen to have any students of yours in Greece, would you?🙂

Thanks so much Lazaros! Riki sensei has done judo in quite a few countries over the decades, and some of his students do a good deal of traveling too, so it's possible!

The quintessential judo technique. There are videos of Kano sensei performing this but it appears that he is leaning back a bit as he wraps his hikite about the opponents waist, before turning and bowing (for lack of a better word). Was this an older variation or more a stylized version for demonstration?

So have more to do wich a bump sholder, against the side of the uke. Instead to lift him up of the floor ?
