This song isn't about war between Ukraine and Russia!!! This song is about deportation of whole Crimean Tatars nation from Crimea to soviet republics of Middle Asia, that happened on 18th May, 1944, during WW2..

Russian aggression towards Ukraine has never stopped since the beginning of the Russia. But the song is about homeland of Jamala - Crimea. And about deportation of the native habitants of the Crimea in 1944.

Daughter of Crimean Tatar father, Armenian mother who is from Ukraine performing with politically charged song in Tatarian Turkic. How beautiful is this fact?! Please at least in these kinds of performances, drop the placeless chauvinist comments, or putting flags and take credit for nationalizing it. The song presents exactly the opposite. Valeriya Ritz the fact is Eurovision didn't allow songs with political meanings, and this song is beautiful yes but it has a strong political message inside. So, the hate is because they permite the enter of this song that year against Russia. I'm not defending Russia but this is so clear and the way that this song win that year with all Crimea stuff makes more clear now, so please open the eyes. And this song is a piece of art

For everyone, who doesnt understand why she won. Simple answer. She unites the hearts of countries that were under soviet union pressure and corruption. She sang it beautifully, had good runs and the emotion was feelable in everyway possible. The Tree stands for the lost lives. Its a perfect combination story + music + her vocal range and emotion behind it. Eurovision is not only about vocals and the music itself, its about uniting the hearts of the people in Europe, having beautiful emotion behind it having a meaning as a reason to sing such a song.

+sunnyfunny Those Tatars fought for Germany, didn't fight for Germany because they did holocaust, they did because they were promised for a united country with other Turkic nations. This was a strategy of Germans against Russians. Additionally, not all Tatars fought for Germany some resisted against them by joining the Russian side. Simply they were trying to survive in a war scene. Don't also forget that this song received 12 points from Israel.

When I heard this song first time, I didnt understand a word of what she was singing (wasnt paying attention), but I cried because of the emotion she had. I think that is a great thing if one performer can transmit emotion to somebody who is watching her on TV. Did she deserve to win, was it politics, etc. I really dont care. She sang it the way I felt it and I "believed" her. And thats why I think this song is good.

I didn't like this song originally, but after listening it it a few times, and researching why she sang this song, I've learned to appreciate it. And I agree with you 100% about Jamala being emotional during the song. I especially love the part in 2:18 where it sounds like she's singing while crying, and then at 2:27 where she just lets everything go. This song is super depressing and doesn't fit Eurovision at all, but it's still a very well done song. I was super pissed off about Ukraine snatching the win from Australia (Dami Im is my precious cinnamon roll), but as I think about it now, im glad Jamala won.

From the 12-year-old singing this song, I looked up and discovered the Europe Song Contest and this amazing singer and her song "1944" which won. WOW, I thought, what are they talking about. I watched the official video and so moved by it I went to research 1944 and found out what happened to the Crimea population. I watched documentaries and studied the Ukraine map and I just want to thank KZbin for making it possible for a 72-year-old musical Grammy to enjoy the world and learn along the way. I am so taken by Ukraine that I am still studying it. Bravo all of you!

Amazing, sincere song. Nowadays it's rare that the singer composes his own song to tell his own story at Eurovision. Jamala did. So great this international platform is being used to send a powerful message. Some people don't like hearing the truth, they just want to hear meaningless candy pop so they dislike the song.
