It took almost a year for US president Joe Biden to make the decision, but a month after he at last promised to deliver ATACMS long-range missiles to Ukraine, the weapons have now arrived. Our correspondent Mathias Bölinger has more on the missile system's capabilities.

What isn't being talked about is the ATACMs is an OLD weapon system the US is in the process of phasing out. We don't produce anymore. Basically, we're getting rid of them in favor of the Precision Strike Missile (or PrSM). According to wikipedia and other sources, the PrSM is scheduled for initial operational capability in 2023. I suspect one reason we were so reluctant to give ATACMS, aside from a fear of escalation, is our PrSM wasn't yet ready. My guess is the PrSM system is now being produced or prepared in sufficient numbers that we are satisfied in emptying our ATACMS inventory to make room and save money.
@hape3862
@hape3862 Жыл бұрын
That's _exactly_ what I heard a few months ago, that they were waiting for PrSM to be delivered so they could safely retire the ATACMs (= give them to Ukraine).

But Russia will do the same. But the war is on Ukrainian and Russian territory, so the US is satisfied. 4:27 I'm sorry but that's false. Yes, the ATACMS are ballistic missiles but that doesn't make them harder to intercept because A: they fly quite high up so can be easily picked up by radar and B: they come back down in a parabola trajectory which is predictable and thus they can be intercepted. Cruise missiles like the Strom Shadow however stay close to the ground (~50m) and are thus often hidden from radar behind mountains etc. so are quite hard to spot.
@antimatters6283
@antimatters6283 Жыл бұрын
You say; "can be easily picked up by radar .. [trajectory ] is predictable and thus they can be intercepted." And yet, that didn't happen. None were detected or shot down, and it isn't like Russia was not looking for attacks. Other news reports say that ATACMs can also go in zigzag, unpredictable paths. I don't find it credible Russia can shoot down ATACMs, because they haven't, any more than they've shot down HIMARs.

@@larrymunn5279 This war is in Europe so it's a European problem so the French, Germans, and UK should be footing the bill on this war. The Americans have a bigger problem to deal with and that's the Chinese who are way more of an issue than the Russians should the Chinese decide to do something. I highly doubt the Europeans will help us in the Pacific since the Europeans are dragging their feet and neglecting the war happening in their backyard. Yet, we're half a world away from the war and we've already donated more to Ukraine than all European nations combined.

The overwhelming amоunt of approving and cheering соmments by ordinary Russians in response to videos about the atrocities committed against civilians and prisoners of war in Ukraine were equally as shocking to Ukrainians as the war itself. We somehow became accustomed to the war, but the realization of who we have been living alongside all this time without even knowing it is still horrifying. Those barbaric creatures referred to themselves as our brоthеrly people. Negotiating with Russia is lіkе negotiating with ЕbоІа vіrus. What good will a 300km range missile be against the vast area of Russia? Is Ucraine becoming a dumping ground for less optimal weapons?
@billsigmund8113
@billsigmund8113 Жыл бұрын
Anytime our weapons meet Russky weapons, the Russky weapons turn into scrap iron. They are built cheap with the idea of overwhelming the enemy with numbers. They don't care how many men they lose. Most of those "vast areas" are backwards, and most have no electricity. Russkys were filmed stealing toilets, which they apparently don't have in the vast areas. Ukraine isn't invading Russia, just throwing them out of their territory. Almost all of the countries who lived under Russia during the soviet days want nothing to do with them today. Putin read Mein Kampf and uses the same tactics. Move Russky speaking people into somebodys country, then claim you have to send the army in to protect them from the evil foreign country citizens who are picking on them. Ask Georgia, or chechnyia, or Belorussia, or Moldova.
@mebsrea

It does quite a lot of good. Sure, heavy bombers and Russian factories will remain out of range (also due to the political restrictions placed on the use if Western weapons given to Ukraine), but it places Russian tactical aviation assets and supply lines at great risk throughout almost the entirety of Russian-occupied Ukraine. As we’ve seen, it also makes the naval base at Sevastopol unusable by the Russian navy.

@@dr1311If you have to base aircraft that much farther from their targets, it’s equivalent to significantly reducing them in number. They can carry less ordnance for an attack mission, all else being equal, they incur more wear and tear on airframes and engines, which will attrit the fleet and force aircraft to be taken out of service for overhaul more often, the number of sorties per day an aircraft can undertake drops, and the window to hit time-sensitive targets narrows, or in many cases closes entirely. It’s a huge hit to Russian tactical aviation capabilities.
