What about barrel wear? Can you really fire artillery at that rate before the barrel begins to wear out or even explode? Because if your artillery barrels all get worn out, then your shells are useless.
@grahamstevenson1740Ай бұрын
The accuracy of heavily used artillery will certainly degrade. I have seen photos of splayed barrels.
@gordowg1wg145Ай бұрын
Wear is, indeed, an issue - but even then it shows up as less accuracy and, because of possible leakage, range. They have to be severely worn before they become "useless", or dangerous. This is why any firearm barrel - whether a basic rifle, tank cannon, or ship's gun, will have a nominal service life. ie, sheduled replacement after xxx rounds have been fired through it.
@gordowg1wg145Ай бұрын
@@grahamstevenson1740 There are several reasons for "splayed" barrels, the most common reason, IIRC, is a dirty barrel leading to over-pressure as the projectile partially sticks. That can be bad, but worse is when the breech block/assembly gets blown off, as that can kill the crew and takes the whole gun out, rather than being a barrel change.

Russia is SUCH a mighty military power that it has to get half its shells from - of all places - North Korea? If NATO did decide to attack, that probably WOULD be a three-week war! And if NATO _had_ joined forces with Ukraine in driving back Russian forces from the Donbass and Crimea from the very beginning, this whole tragic episode would be history by now, with NATO forces stationed in Ukraine to deter future aggression. Sometimes, the apparently 'safe' way can prove much more costly in the long run than the 'bold' way.
@gordowg1wg145Ай бұрын
I would suggest the PRIMARY reason Ukraine's allies haven't actually deployed is "nuclear weapons". The west's doctrine is it's more of a "mass deployment", to take out infrastructure and other fixed targets, but Russia has always regarded them as tactical, strategic weapons where "low yield" weapons have battlefield application. As such, they had more of a "hands off" initial support philosophy with NONE of their actual troops being directly involved - unlike Russia, which tis taking troops from any country it can. If "NATO" DID get involved, the overwhelming force would mean just a few days to take out the Russian military forces - if that long, prior to accepting their surrender - but there is the problem of Putin having nuclear weapons, and if he thought he was going to lose power in defeat, it's certainly possible he will launch a strike! Even if only 10% were functional and/or the silo commanders accepted the order and launched, that would be a VERY bad day for 'the West"! Heck, just a half dozen that got through would be a global catastrophy.
@marvinc9994Ай бұрын
@@gordowg1wg145 I agree with you, of course. Putin is very much a Wild Card - but, with regard to nuclear weapons, I have a feeling that - as a 'rational' actor with a love of power - he has _already_ calculated the distinct possibility of a bullet in the head from someone in the Military, unwilling to risk _his_ family for Vladimir Vladimirovitch, before the Red Button is pressed. When it comes to the idea of a Palace Coup at the Kremlin, I seriously cannot think of anything more likely to provoke it than the threat of nuclear suicide: _cui bono_ , after all?
