Fact: this group has got no producers of promoting companies, but they are first in Apple Music in Ukraine now and they have 400 thousand viewers of Shum at the first week. Also Shum is not the song they plan for Eurovision. They did not plan to include it in national selection, but all of their fans wanted this song on Eurovision, so they decided to include Shum in Vidbir. The music video and all of the stuff costs around 12 Euros and it was recorded on phone

Not really pagan, just folk
@LordTactusMe3 жыл бұрын
@@rustictango6933 Yeah, it's pagan alright. Shum is our old pagan God of woods. And it's nothing bad or anything. The pagan roots go deep everywhere. For example, Christian Easter is a repurposed pagan celebration of spring coming as well.
@rustictango69333 жыл бұрын
@@LordTactusMe @Lord Touch Me shum/шум literally means sound/noise in Ukrainian, the song is a spring song/веснянка, a part of a common "calendar cycle" of ukrainian folk songs, songs that are connected to a specific activity/ time of the year, this song in particular talks about sowing the seeds during spring and would be sang for enjoyment and to give a tempo to the work in the field, my grandma still does that. I really fail to see any direct connection to any sort of paganism here, same goes for Easter, the tradition to paint eggs might have originated before Christianity, but what we have today has mostly developed during the last millennia purely in terms of ukrainian culture under christianity

@@rustictango6933 Paganism is язычество. So when one is invoking the Forrest Spirit what's it called? JS
@caomunistadoggo41292 жыл бұрын
@@rustictango6933 but paganism is all about this, celebration of the natural cycles and the nature itself, and the agricultural cycles that developed in this context. It's from there that the people "recognized" their gods, it was the way of understanding and interpreting all this nature. (And yes, Shum on now days means "noise", but in the past it meant exactly the name of the deity that brings the sounds of birds and animals when the winter is over and the nature is awakening, this 'noise' of nature, a noise that means life awakening, and they used this type of chanting to awaken this god and the spring). And there is no problem nor shame in this. Saying this is not pagan or paganism is like saying that Christian music didn't came from Christianity and should not be associated with it, that are only a type of music. The problem is only when christian people started "demonizing" all that are not from christian origin, but couldn't let their own culture, so they started erasing the origins of their costumes to feel better with their religious conscience.

Shum - ancient Ukrainian spring dancing game, which consists of two stages: weaving and unweaving of Shum (witch also one of spring demigods, dedicated to plants growth). When Shum is "weaving", pairs of dancers staying in semicircle, one pair forming "gates" with their hands and all other pairs crossing the "gates". I'm kinda digging this. Loving that folk, pagan feel with a sense of 90s trance/dance. The video is like an embracing of darkness but a call for a better brighter day. It will interesting to see how the edit to three minutes will effect the song. I love that there is a slower pace that breaks into an energic finish. It almost defines the idea of emerging to better day. I totally agree with the Verka Serduska comparison because it is infectious in the best possible way. I always love quirkiness at eurovision and this song is also very Ukraine and representative of their musical culture and trends. This is a top 10 for me. I'm sure it's a contender to win because I am not sure this will garner enough interest from the majority but personally I dig it.

This is really catchy, though I'm totally waiting till we get the three-minute edit to see what they have to cut. It reminds me of the band Gjallarhorn's "Suvetar" ("spring goddess" in Finnish, though I think they're a Swedish band), but that's more acoustic. It still has the great vocals and I love the middle where the beat drops out and the flute sound come right to the forefront.
