They lost 3 of them, 2 were destroyed on the ground and one in the air. From what I heard from a U.S Air force Colonel, it was one of Ukraine's best pilots that perished. His callsign was "Moonfish", if he was as good as Ukrainians say he is, he would have ejected before crashing, so it's more likely that he was shot down. This officer stated that from the beginning, he was against Ukraine having F-16s because it takes too much training and too much work to set up radar stations that match NATO aircrafts in the midst of war. Even if Ukraine were given 1000 F-16s, the outcome would still be the same.

@@user-wf8ol5hv6k As for the F-16? It's absolute junk! What could the F-16 achieve in Ukrainian airspace, today?, or in fact, how long could an F-16 survive in Ukrainian airspace? I'd have to estimate the F-16, would have a combat life expectancy of less than 30 minutes over Ukraine, (and that's extremely generous). You only need to understand what it would be facing? Regardless, that we already know it can't survive against the S-300 anti-air defences, it would then need to survive against, for example, a Russian SU-35? So, how could it survive, is the only real question that matters? The SU-35 is classified a "4++ Generation Fighter" - though its true capabilities go well beyond the original/current crop of 4 & 4+ Generation mounts like the F-15, 16, 18, Eurofighter Typhoon, French Dassault Rafael etc. The SU-35E has a forward and rear-facing Phazotron radar system capable of simultaneous tracking of 34 targets up to 92 miles, (even over extremely uneven terrain). Its cockpit design contains a colour CRT display unit, as well as HUD (Head-Up Display unit) along with digital fly-by-wire (FBW) capability equipped with quadruple redundancy - (the onboard computers will always find four different ways to achieve the desired results of its combat mission). Its avionics also include an Irbis-E passive phased array radar system. The SU-35 only falls short of the standard adopted for true 5th Generation, by its lack of stealth, however, as we've seen, the SU-35's tactical value has increased massively, and its overall combat ability has broadened considerably. The F-16, is, in effect, an obsolete, unusable aircraft in Ukraine, and in every way imaginable, and the US must know this, really. And that shows us all, the real level of desperation we really are seeing from the USA.

That could be either pessimistic or optimistic from a Russian point of view. If the Russians want to capture those cities, they will want to do so before the rains arrive. If they don't do so before the rains, the mud will slow the Russians down giving the Ukrainians time for deploying reinforcements. The Ukrainians will have exactly the same problem in the Kursk area except that western heavy armoured vehicles are heavier, so not as good at traversing the mud as the Russian ones. If the Russians do take Pokrovsk in the next month, there are no significant defences in that area on the other side. If they wanted to, they could advance to the Dnipro river. Of course that would leave them vulnerable to counter attacks from the side, as they wouldn't be able to do it on a very wide front.

A friend of mine flew for a carrier that operated Cessna 402 with retractable landing gear, he flew that aircraft very well. A few months after he was flying for a second carrier equipped with Cessna caravan fix landing gear, and now he was working for two carriers with two different types of equipment at the same time. The two aircrafts operated similar except for the landing gear. One day he was flying the Cessna 402 into a small airport without an air tower and he forgot to put down the landing gear. He landed on the belly of the aircraft seriously damaging the aircraft. For a while, he forgot which aircraft he was landing thinking it was the caravan aircraft with the fix landing gear, accept it was not. Even though pilots make search errors, especially under pressure, I think what happened to the F16 have a lot more to do with what Russia was doing that day, much more than what it has to do with pilot error. After all, we can never expect Ukraine to tell us what really happened, especially if Russia is the cause of what happened, It doesn't profit Ukraine to do that.

They are still a viable warplane for many countries. They are much cheaper than more modern options, they are versatile. Turkey is buying some, Brazil are considering them. Of course in a battle with modern gen 4.5 aircraft, these F16's would probably come off worse unless they had significant numerical superiority (I am aware that some variants of the F16 are gen 4.5, but those donated to Ukraine are older ones).

Pretty sure you can shoot down something regardless if iff is showing friendly unit. As for turkey, they literally didn't have a SAM system to shoot down that f16. Take a look at the operational history of the Patriot system. Friendly fire incidents with Patriot happened in the Gulf War and the Iraq War. The first Patriot kill of Iraq was an American F/A-18 if I'm not mistaken. IFF is a very old system and friendly fire happens frequently.

I know how airline flight planning works and the flight plan is setup in advance before departure, of course ATC can make a plane deviate course (which rarely happens on course, it happens mainly on departure and approach) but I don't think it happened in this case, as this was a commonly used airline route.
